  1. I think it's a great idea! Attributes are very helpful and since playground caches are a source of problems for some, and desired for others, it would be great to be able to filter.
  2. Check the previous logs, too. Sometimes there is a hint buried in a log even though the writer didn't mean to give one. :-) For example, if someone writes "What a great camo job!" or "I'd never have thought of hiding it there!", it might lead you to look in a more unexpected area instead of the obvious, or for a cool camo container instead of just a key container or film canister. Doing that has helped me quite a few times when I was stumped.
  3. I love love love to ride! I have a Specialized road bike and try to get in about 100 miles each week. Sometimes I incorporate a geocache run, like I did yesterday. I only line up about 4 or 5 for the run, b/c the cycling is the focus for me. I have my Garmin Venture mounted on my bars, and rigged a mount for my iPhone as well. I carry a pen in my camelback zipper pouch, and very small swag or TBs if I have them. It's fun to accomplish two of my favorite things at once, and the caching time is usually a much needed break! Yesterday I rode 42 miles, and did 3 caches. The last one was beside a cemetery that had huge trees. It was such a nice break and a great way to end up a good ride. I agree with getting a bike that fits, and a saddle that fits! My road seat is a million times more comfortable than the one I used to have on my "comfort" bike!!
  4. To me, a sand dollar or sea shell is a great find. I love them. I agree about carefully wrapping them or putting them in a little box b/c of their fragility, though. I like to leave things in caches even though I rarely take anything, especially hacky sacks, or other things that kids would like to have. That way children will have something nice. I found some cute small hardbound (2"x2" size) notebooks at Michael's crafts that I've left lately. One of the coolest things I traded for recently was an individual pack of bug wipes! lol! I was out without mosquito repellant and they were needed! But, like many, for me, the fun is the hunt. But I also want to enhance the experience for others. Just my 2 cents!
  5. Just wanted to add some of mine - *If previous logs say "wear pants", WEAR PANTS! lol! 500 feet through blackberry brambles can do a number on your legs! (experientially speaking!) *Bring water if you're walking any distance in the summer. It's amazing how fast you can dehydrate, especially if the hunt takes longer than a few minutes. *Cell phone is a necessity b/c you never know what will happen out there! But since you might not have signal, always let someone know where you're going. *Don't forget to turn of your car when you go to get the cache. Don't ask. It's too embarrassing.
  6. I carry grocery bags in my geocaching bag and CITO occasionally. Yes, it's kind of nasty, but I have disposable gloves in my bag also just for this purpose. I figure if everyone picks up a piece of trash occasionally, it will add up to a lot in the end. I'm not a "tree hugger" either, but was raised by a Girl Scout leader mom in the early 70s, so it's just sort of in my nature to do this. I haven't attended an event, but want to one of these days. It's always good to give back a little.
  7. Have you tried using MapMyRide.com? I map my rides on there all the time. It's a free site, but you get more features with paid membership.
  8. I just got a Venture HC on Amazon.com - new for $128 (free shipping). I'm loving it!! I'm still figuring it out, but it's very accurate and easy to use.
  9. I have to say I understand the frustration of a DNF especially when the last log or two, from the day before, says how easy the find was! I had this situation today. I searched and searched and finally had to give up b/c of an appointment I had to go to, and just yesterday someone found it "easily"! Arggh! Then after my appointment, I went for 3 more, and found them within minutes. Go figure!
  10. I've only been doing this a little while, but I've found quite a few that were WELL covered. One if I hadn't had my husband with me, I never would have found it! It was well tucked under logs and covered with leaves. Keep looking! You'll find it!
  11. Welcome! I'm pretty new and addicted to! I've got 45 finds and just placed my first hide! I've sent out 4 travel bugs, too. I've been using my iPhone for geocaching but I'm ordering a gpsr b/c of battery issues. Yeah, this is definitely the most fun I've had in a long time!
  12. Kinda self-explanatory - I LOVE to play tennis more than anything else, I'm female, and well, I'm not 42 anymore, but I made up the screen name when I was! lol! It should be tennisgirl44 starting next Thursday May 7 actually.
  13. The thrill of the hunt is my main motivator, but it's fun to see good swag, too. If my boys come along, that's their prime motivator! :-) Since I know so many kids geocache, I bring "good stuff" to trade, things I know any of my children would enjoy getting. (Matter of fact, I've had to say "No, that's to trade in geocaches, leave it in the bag!") A good place to get cheap stuff and lots of it, if you don't find what you need at the dollar store, etc., is Oriental Trading Company's website. They have some really cool items that I used to order when I did kids' summer day camps. You can get enough stuff to last all year, and maybe next!
  14. Just to throw a positive story in - I just recently started geocaching and really love the TBs and geocoins. Well, a friend of mine used to geocache, but stopped for various reasons, with a TB in his possession. I got him to hand it off to me, and it's now back on it's way (hopefully! lol! barring any other abductions!) My friend picked it up 8/29/2007, I placed it in a new cache on 4/22/09. There is always hope! :-)
  15. Haven't been doing this long, but I will add mine to the list, because I've done enough already to say "Oh no! Not more blackberry bushes!" The thorns are killer and you can get all wrapped up in them. I have the scratches to prove it!
  16. Right now, we just log under my account (since I'm pretty new). I'll see if they stay interested before they get accounts. I'm the one in the family that's all excited about 'em anyway! lol!
  17. I'm in the top age group, too. :-) 43 right now, but 44 in about 2 weeks!
  18. I found this before I started geocaching, but thought I'd add it to the list...
  19. This is the design I came up with. Right now, I'm simply printing them on bumper sticker paper and sticking them on poker chips. I'll get a pic of the finished product & post tomorrow. I am spraying them with sealant from Michael's. I'm hoping to design something more "permanent" as I go along, and maybe do holiday themed things, too. I'd love to trade with anyone who is interested!
  20. I'm new to Geocaching, too, just starting this past weekend and quickly becoming addicted. For me, it's not about the swag, it's the hunt. Now yes, I REALLY love finding TBs and geocoins and moving them along, and I will drop in something "cool" for the next person (especially since so many kids love to get swag). So far bracelets, a ring, a whistle and such. I got some little penlight led lights that are cute and were inexpensive, as well as disney princess ink pens. My sons love to trade swag so I need to have those along. And like I said, it's fun to toss in something that someone else might enjoy. I made a signature poker chip using bumpersticker paper & my printer and poker chips, of course. I'll be tossing those in each one, just to say I was there. :-) Like I mentioned, though, it's the hunt. There's nothing greater than yelling "Ah ha! I found it!!!"
