  1. well by the sounds of it you want it for navigation. The legend has 8mb of memory which isn't a lot but it does the trick. your not gunna get a unit with great detail on their base maps your gunna have to buy software for that.

As for signal your gunna have to leave it on the dash to get as good as your gunna get. the lengend can be hard to read in the car at times because of the small screen. it can be done tho.

Also you can get a re-radiating antenna for it for use in the car. i don't have one but i've read in here that people seem to like the one from PC-mobile.

try it a few more times tho, i didn't like reception the first few times i used mine but its great.

hope this helps and happy hunting

  2. well I found out about geocaching from a tv show. like keith i'm glad I did or i don't think i'd be here doing this.

as for am i pro media or against it. media coverage can either be good or bad. it will either promote our hobby for good or for bad. it will prodivide others an insite to this and others will join. while others will destroy caches. It may help up us with parks and state lands or it may not.

media coverage of our hobby will happen no matter what we do. We must make sure that it is for the good and promotes us.

Use what you have to your advantage

  3. points to consider you'll need a mapping unit so here are other things to look at:

    size of memory unit has

    size of screen

    color

    autorouting

    external antenna

price and which software to get.

and then the other bells and whistles like electronic compass altimator and so on.

i've only had one unit myself so this is all i can offer.

  4. I contacted several metal detecting groups to see if they would be willing to search for my ring. I heard back from one couple that was planning on visiting Cape Cod and that they would search for the ring. Against all odds, they managed to find it!!!!:P:lol:

Now, anyone know how much I should offer as a reward?

    wow, congrats on the find.

not sure about the reward tho, dinner, money your call

  5. looks like i will be able to go, now hopefully school wont get in the way.

does anyone know if you have to call and book for food or can you pay and tell them when you get there?

  6. since i am an arborist i would like to add that if you screw into the tree or attach somthing to it, make sure that you don't screw/ attach it all the way in, leave room so that the tree can grow and when it does it will push the attachted items out with it and not grow around it.

  7. dont' have that unit, but this may help. when you go to mark your current position as a way point, edit the co-ords and name to what you want it to be. i know thats how you do it with the etrex's.

    hope that works for ya

  8. try a pelican box, they are a little better then otter boxes in my opion.

they have foam insdie to protect what ever you put in it like cameras for example but the foam can be removed.

they are pricey, but waterproof and really tough.

  9. thanks for the response.

just another newbie type question, what does simplex mean and for repeaters, is there two frequencies. one for tramsite and one for receive?

  10. i deffinately would post a note. I ended up in one of these parks while doing a college project collecting data, i was alone and a little creaped out by this guy walking around the park. he evening started to talk to me and fallow me. i wasn't thinking much of it cause most hikers are friendly but when he fallowed me i was a little worried, being alone and all. i actually called the cops and they said this park was noted for this activity.

so ya i'd post a note cause i would want people to know about this before hand.

  11. ok first i'd like to say that this all sounds great and i'd like to see one done, near me of course. now a newbie basic question, could you see the infared light with a regular set of night vision glasses the kind recreational uses can get?

and if some one does this type of thing please let us know and possible a web page so some of us could try it too. thanks

  12. This would be a good topic to get opinions on. I wonder if anyone will step up and admit that they will return time and time again until the find it.

I have 2 DNF's so far.....I'm not bothered by it. One I simply couldn't find and someone right after me found it and the other the people before me couldn't find and the people after me couldn't find it.....

    dik

sure i'll step up. I went to look for this once cache 3 times. me and my partner looked at the cache each time we where there but didn't actually find it. the cache was a 1/1 too. that was my first dnf. my second one was the other day, the person before found it the person right after me found it too. i'll be back tho.

    never give up, never surrender

  13. for me its 1.

I will log a dnf after the first try. this is to let the cache owner that i couldn't find it and that maybe its gone. i will try a few more times to find it if i didn't find it on the scond find before i post another dnf. the only reason any more dnf posts will be logged is if the last few people who visited the cache after my first visit also posted dnfs.

  14. no not always. it will depend on where you are located in the world. the time of day, where the statellits are located, tree cover and clear view of the sky with the gpsr.

all of these will affect your accuracy. your 20ft accuracy is common. i wouldn't worry about it to much.
