  1. See, now this is where my stupidity comes into play. I understand what you're trying to say. But without the Google Location Services activated, the phone has no idea where I am. In c:geo, for example, it just says "Trying to locate." I took it outside for 10 minutes and nothing happened. So I *need* to have that the Google one checked, right?
  2. This is one of the solutions I've seen on several forums. However, there are three settings under LOCATION on this phone ... and none of them is "Use GPS Satellites." The three settings are "VZW Location Services," "Standalone GPS Services" and "Google Location Services." I have the green checkmark next to each. I'm thinking the "Standalone GPS" one is comparable to the "Use GPS Satellites" setting that people keep referencing?
  3. OK, this is humbling for me. I've been caching since 2004, doing it the old-style way. I've manually entered the coordinates of every cache I've ever found into my Garmin eTrex. Yes, I'm that rooted in the old school. I recently, however, purchased an HTC Thunderbolt smartphone and would like to figure out how to start using it to enhance my caching life. I downloaded the c:geo app and have been playing with it a bit, and I'm looking forward to getting out into the world and actually finding caches without having to plan out all my trips way ahead of time. My problem is that I can't figure out how to make the GPS in the phone accurate at all. 262 feet. That's the accuracy I have. And it won't get any better. I've tried reading Droid forums, downloading all kinds of different "GPS Fix" apps, clicking all the location settings on and off... and I can't get the thing to do any better than 262. It's pretty useless at 262. Another problem I have is that because I'm so far behind the game in this smartphone business, a lot of the "help sites" I find are written in terms that go way over my head. They're supposed to be (and probably are) simple, but they just aren't dumbed-down enough for me. So if someone can talk way down to me and tell me step-by-step how to make this phone useful to me for caching purposes, it would be wonderfully appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  4. Missed the first posting of the front side of the coin... our name is perfect. Can't wait for the coin.
  5. Perfect! All lower-case, two hyphens, "n" in the middle... good stuff!
  6. Haha... I certainly hope this means the coin will read "davee-n-cachincarrie....intolerable". Very appropriate, just ask anyone who knows us!
  7. We're not forum regulars by any stretch, but we'd definitely buy a coin if our name were on it! davee-n-cachincarrie (I know it's long... sorry.)
  8. No, don't. Take the discussions and excuses regarding fake finds elsewhere. Thanks, Jamie Yes, JamieZ has mentioned this numerous times in this thread. If you want to justifly allowing a lie on your cache page, please debate it here. I'm not getting involved in a debate, because I honestly don't care that much. I just wanted to make it known that I think your cause, at least in the specific case of my cache, is entirely misguided. Back off and mind your own business. Thanks.
  9. You have my permission to say you're 7' tall too. OK, since I am the owner of this cache I permitted these two to log, and I was made aware of this thread by a nasty note so graciously left by Criminal, let me give my two cents. Who cares? Honestly. It was a puzzle cache: they solved the puzzle, but didn't find the cache. I asked them to tell me where they were searching before I allowed them to log it. They were looking in the right spot, which means they correctly solved the puzzle, but the cache wasn't there. If it had been there, they'd have found it easily. Now, I personally would never log a cache I didn't physically find. That's just my personal preference. But if others want to, in situations such as this one... who cares? Is this a contest to see who can get the most finds? Last I checked, it isn't. So what's the big deal if someone who isn't you isn't doing things exactly the same way you are? I'm not advocating logging finds on caches you didn't even attempt to find. I'm just saying that in a situation like this, where a puzzle was correctly solved but the cache was muggled, it really isn't harming anyone to allow these out-of-town cachers to get some sort of credit for their fruitless efforts. Flame away.
  10. What are the guidelines for the different shades? I mean, I notice Chautauqua County, NY, is the darkest in its area by far. However, I've only turned up maybe 20 or so marks there. Would that be enough to create the color shift? If so, yay for me! EDIT: Disregard this entire message. I guess I could have looked for the key on the map a little bit harder. It is my doing!
  11. NC0597 - City of Jamestown (NY) That's all I've got for you at this time.
  12. Mine is pretty lame compared to most of the other ones here, but I had so much fun looking at these that I thought it was my civil duty to add one of my own! NC0172
  13. Thanks, guys, for your help. Now, I suppose, the question is: should I get the coordinates of this USGS marker and submit them to the NGS? Would they be at all interested?
  14. Oh, jeez... so I was wrong *again*. Very interesting. Thanks for the help, Z15!
  15. Sorry... I guess I should have read the FORUM FAQs and not just the www.geocaching.com/mark FAQs. I found this: Q. I happened upon a benchmark, but it isn't listed on Geocaching.com. Can I report it to the NGS? A. The Geocaching.com database is not the same as the NGS database. If you are going to be submitting recoveries, please use the NGS database to check the most up to date datasheet before you submit a recovery. Not all marks in the NGS database are in the Geocaching.com database. If you do find a mark, and can’t find it on Geocaching.com, use whatever information you have about the mark (such as its coordinates, station name, or county) to look for it in the NGS datasheet database. The NGS database can be found at http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/datasheet.prl. If the mark is not in the NGS database, it won’t have a PID and you will not be able to submit a recovery. I'm checking the NGS database now. I haven't found it yet, but now I see why it's not on the site. My bad.
  16. I walked over 8 miles today tracking down benchmarks, and 3 of the 4 I went to were recovered in good form. The last one was gone, which was a bummer. It looked like the day would end on a sour note. As I was walking back to my truck, though, I decided to go through town instead of back on the tracks. As I walked through town, I was shocked to find a benchmark in someone's driveway! http://www.emkeonline.com/mysterymark.jpg http://www.emkeonline.com/drivewaymark.jpg It looks exactly the same as a mark I'd found earlier in the day (NC0169), right down to the year stamped on it. However, I can't locate it on the site. In the FAQs, it talks about finding marks that aren't in the database. What it says, though, is "[t]he NGS is not the only organization that creates and uses benchmarks and other types of control markers. For example, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) places survey markers at their dams, dikes, levees, flood control systems and other structures. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and other federal agencies, along with your county surveyor and private surveyors and engineers place markers that often appear very similar to geodetic markers, to reference land survey corners as part of the public land survey system." This is obviously a NGS (USGS) mark! Am I crazy, or shouldn't it be in the database? What, if anything, should I do?
  17. Now I feel stupid. I've been a cacher for a year, and I've updated my profile countless times. I never saw that stupid little check box, though! Thanks so much, Thot!
  18. On my account page, it says: You do not want to be notified when there are new caches in your area. How can I change this? I *do* want to be notified!
