  1. I read a lot of logs for the caches near where I live, and I've found several of them where muggles know of/assist cachers to find them. Particularly in Baltimore. There is one cache where somebody wrote that a person came out of a nearby house, saw them leaving, and asked if they were giving up. They had already found it, but they thanked him for his offer of assistance. Another cache elsewhere in Baltimore is located near where a homeless person tends to say and many of the logs mention the man calling out 'warmer...warmer...cold!' as they search for the cache. Apparently watching and assisting geocachers serves as a form of entertainment to him. Unless people mention anyone being hostile rather than friendly or helpful, I don't think it would be necessary to move it.
  2. A couple weeks ago someone replied to a thread I had begun with a link to an awesome flyer one could print out and give out. It had a whole ton of information about geocaching in one two-sided document. Unfortunately, I lost the link. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and where I can find it again?
  3. What would be kind of cute for a small event would be cupcakes with icons on them. Like traditional, multi, etc icons. [/random idea]
  4. Pretty cool. Looks yummy. ^^ My favorite part of sheet cakes is usually the edge...because it has the highest amount of frosting! *laughs*
  5. I'd love for everyone else to post pictures of GC cakes, cupcakes, brownies, etc. I tried finding some pictures for my dad when he was planning this, but couldn't find anything, so he had to go with his own creativity.
  6. Hey, don't assume! Maybe a...little chocolate...bunny had made its den there and it was a...um...naturally occurring hole that just got a rock placed over it for extra camo?
  7. Well...it was small and brown, but instead of a tiny rolled-up log paper it had nougat, peanuts and caramel in it.
  8. I just had Producers music run through my head. Maybe it's because I'm seriously tired, but I now have a full-out dance sequence playing in my mind. 'I want to be a reviewer! Review new caches every day. I want to be a reviewer, for more patience I will pray. I want to be a reviewer, even though there's lots to do! I want to be a reviewer, despite all it'll put me through!' Or maybe even earlier in the song.... "More micros. More micros. Whhhhyyyyyy more micros? More micros? More micros! Why are there so many many many new micros?" Sorry...[/end random moment of randomness.]
  9. A couple of weeks ago was my brother's birthday. Among other things, we went geocaching. For one reason or another, my dad did not have time to get his birthday cake ready, then we decided to wait until my aunt was here to visit so she could enjoy it. So we had it tonight. It's rather cool. He's proud of it, especially since it is his first time working with fondant. This is the top of the cake. He had me bring down our Garmin as a model. On the left side of the cake is a little hill. The frosting is homemade buttercream - the brown is chocolate, yummy. There is a little cache hidden somewhere in the cake. Can you find it? Hint: Sbyybj gur neebj No coordinates available, because the cache is already gone! *grins* Did you look in the bottom right corner? A mini Snickers bar for my brother's enjoyment. [sorry for the blur, it's the only image I have]
  10. I've thought about this myself... I started out as the only geocacher in my family. I made myself an account. My siblings both wanted in on the fun...they both made their accounts. While we lived in Texas, on the few finds we made, we all three signed the logs. And all three of us made online logs. Now, however, the parents are in on the game as well. I made a team account which covers all five of us, but I also keep up on my seperate account. I write 'litefoot13' and 'weatherstonzoocrew' in the logs, and log them online. Sometimes, however, my siblings want to write their own online logs, for one reason or another. Despite them technically falling under the 'zoocrew' account, I still let them log it, even on those ones that they did not write their own name onto the physical logsheet, as long as they were part of the find...or the DNF, as the case might be. If my brother comes out into the woods with me through brush and tree and poison ivy...he can log it. My sister cannot, since she wimped out and stayed back on the path, even though she is part of the zoocrew team. Part of my reasoning for not letting them sign the physical log is that after I sign it for both me and the zoocrew account, and both of them sign it...that's four lines taken up by us. ^^" I don't want to fill out the sheet, after all. It's all very convoluted, I know. I imagine it will become unnecessary later, though, because neither one shows much inclination to keep up with their online logs. They're just along for the ride. ^^
  11. All right. Much thanks to all. I think I will refrain from taking out any logs unless completely illegible...and if there is no space to add in a spare sheet I will not replace, just log a NM. Like I said, I just wanted to check, because I have heard other posters call NM logs for full logsheets annoying and unnecessary. ^^ But I think I will do what I would want people to do for one of my caches. And if someone is angry at me for doing so, they can let me know! *grins*
  12. I'm a fairly new geocacher, though I lurk the forums pretty extensively and therefore have a decent knowledge. There is one topic that I think I'd like a little more information on, however, before I do anything that relates to it. Logs. Suppose I find a cache and the log is missing/wet/full beyond belief. What is the proper protocol? If I have a replacement log paper on hand (as I am thinking of having in my geocaching bag, along with extra plastic bags of various size), should I replace? Add to? I imagine a replacement would be welcome for a missing log, but what if it is just full and/or soggy? Personally I would probably add a new sheet if there is room, but not add one if I would have to take out any log to do so. Unless the previous paper is disintegrated. The other related question is virtually logging. I've seen a few comments on marking 'Needs Maintenance' for full/soggy logs that were very negative. Should I write a NM log for a cache if I find the log full...should I only log it NM if I am the umpteenth person to find it that way? Should I only write NM for damaged containers? What is generally acceptable?
  13. I've thought about it...in fact, I'm really good at making miniature paper cranes (like, small enough to fit 3-4 in a locket). I'm considering watching for some teeny, tiny bottles, putting in a colourful crane, and gluing the top in. Just don't know where to find said teeny tiny bottles. Cute! I wonder if you could find some tiny bottles at craft stores, like the little babydoll bottles and whatnot...not sure about the lid..maybe a little cork. I got the idea from from browsing through etsy.com one day...particularly from this item. Maybe I should write the artist and ask where they get their bottles. *grins*

  15. Definitely! Thanks! He's excited to start making them...is starting to look at everything with a photographer's eye. "Would this make a good card?"
  16. Additional question, now... My brother is watching my sister and me making all these cool things to put into caches...not being crafty he feels a little bit left out. I had a thought...since he's really into photography, maybe he could turn some of his best pictures into 'place trading cards'. Print them out, write the place, maybe a short description, and sign the back, then laminate them. Would those be interesting swag to find?
  17. Sometimes I think I would prefer caching by myself...mainly because when I go with my family (at least for the moment) they're rather...conspicuous. We're all novices, but I tend to be more quiet and stealthy naturally, while my dad...isn't. We went on a cache run on Baltimore for my brother's birthday and he's all "Is it in this area?" "Lemme see that thing." [Thing equalling either gps or my notebook with notes on the caches, whatever fits.] "I think it's over here!" While poking around at things. *sigh* My problem, however...is I hate to drive. I hate to drive in traffic even more. Living in Maryland and wanting to go to caches in Baltimore, Annapolis, DC, etc is much easier and funner for me if I let him do the driving. *laughs* So, unless I learn to deal with traffic, family caching it is.
  18. I found bookcrossing last year in Texas...I didn't do very much, because apparently where I lived noone liked books much. I released a few, but they fizzled really fast. I have a couple of books earmarked for geocaching that I'll drop if I ever find a container big enough. ^^
  19. Thanks again for all the responses! I didn't expect so many positive replies. ^____^ Can't wait to go out! Maybe this weekend. *sigh*
  20. I have access to my mom's personal laminator. It does the awesome 'hard' lamination. Some of my favorite bookmarks came from a used-book store. They took people's old photographs (mostly nature shots) and cut them in half widthwise. They stamped their name on the back. The photo paper is hardy enough to stand up to how I beat on my bookmarks. ^^
  21. Thanks for all the responses! I'll definitely have to start working on some of these now, to have a little stockpile when I have some time to go out. ^^ The amigurumi I'm thinking of would be tiny, made from embroidery thread instead of regular yarn. I wouldn't make/place too many, though...takes an hour apiece at minimum. And thread is hard on the hands. *laughs* Actually, I recently had an idea. In Texas I saw a cache that was 'Roadkill Alley' or some such thing, where there tended to be a vast amount of roadkill. I thought if I found a similar road near where I live, I'd try to put a cache with one of these as a FTF prize. It would be in regular armadillo colours and not camouflage. (This one was a gift for my dad...he's in the Army. *grins*) He's got embroidered X's for eyes and tire treads on his stomach.
  22. Thanks for all the replies! I feel an urge to make more bookmarks coming on. *grins*
  23. How about the friendship bracelets. I'm practiced enough that a number of them will actually be fairly complex patterns, and they'd fit into most caches. Would those be interesting to find?
  24. True. Hadn't considered that. I'll experiment with a couple of other options.
