  1. What an odd coincident! I was working out in North Bend(small town that adjoins Coos Bay), almost 1000 miles from my home base, during this same time frame and I did do a little geocaching while I was there. Small world. Glad I didn't find him/her but glad that they were found for the sake of the family.
  2. I have a cache in a local park that I try to keep filled with little nic-naks that kids would like. Don't really care about the fair trade rules on this one I just want the kids to be able to find something to take. While maintaining it one day I find that it has a bunch of literal garbage in it including an open bag of Ramon noodles.
  3. I personally use a iPhone and a Delorme PN-20 but my son has an iPod touch and if you prepare before you leave your wi-fi connection it works fine for holding the information about the caches. Obviously with no GPS there is no directional information available but the coordinates are there and the description, etc. so if you have a GPS that you cannot download cache data into it is a great resource. Now that all being said he now has an iPhone and some $500 fancy smancy GPS and no longer uses the iPod for caching at all.
  4. Well I've been involved in scouting for about 14 years as an adult. I've been to Wood Badge and staffed on three Wood Badge courses. I didn't progress all that far as a boy but have been Cubmaster, Scoutmaster and Varsity Coach. I believe that the scouting program when properly applied helps young men & women (yes Virginia there are young women in scouting) become self-sufficient, good citizens and future leaders. But other than that I guess Bigredmed is right, really not much to offer.
  5. Thanks Dave for keeping me entertained for six years. I've probably used 500 gallons of gas while out geocaching alone. In all honesty, environmentalist who fly in in private jets to "global warming summits," and live in mega mansions, have greater carbon footprints than geocachers ever will. Yeap! If your greener than Al Gore, your green enough!
  6. My FTF prizes range from nothing to flashlights, key chain pic LCD, survival bracelets, etc. The biggest prize I've left was a 7mm Ammo can with a log book, pencil and geocaching card. Occasionally I'll drop in a NTF (next to find) prize. As some have said most FTF guys aren't after the prize just the empty log book. The main reason that I go after FTFs is not so much for the empty log as for the many times that I've met other cachers near GZ. That's the real fun! Had that opportunity today. Headed over to the Home Depot and seen a new cache come up so we stopped by and found 8 other cachers there. We never found the cache but it was fun to hang out, dig around in the bushes and chat.
  7. Here is a place with pretty good prices on ammo cans for those of you who don't have a near by Army/Navy store. https://www.surpluscenter.com/sort.asp?numr...536031311352641
  8. I'm guessing this horse is dead.
  9. Yeah! You're right and I should be and am ashamed of myself. My apologies to OP.
  10. Only one so far. The cache was apparently on private property (for over 4 years) and the owner/manager was spying on me from across the freeway. I didn't see him. I found the cache logged it and by the time I got back to my truck the owner/manager was there and wanted to know what I was doing. I explained it to him and he gave me lecture about property rights ect. (the cache was just out side of a fence line) He tried to say that the public road that I was parked on was his property also. So as I was writing my field note he went out to the cache grabbed it and brought it to me and told me to take it. Not wanting to irritate him further I took it and returned it to the CO.
  11. My favorite size cache is anything that can't be classified as a micro. Some of my caches are:
  12. I messed around with this a little bit but I guess the problem is that in most areas of the US you are going to be the pioneer and build the missions but not really have a mission to play (other than your own). As someone said building a mission is pretty easy as far as the nuts and bolts part is concerned the time consuming part is going to be the story line that makes it interesting enough to pursue the mission. Then you have to figure out a way to get the mission into the hands of a player. ie. get someone in your area to down load the program. It does seem to be very much like Wherigo but at least there are a few of those games set up at least in my area.
  13. I just have a 3G iPhone and have been caching with it in an area that I not only didn't have 3G coverage I had no coverage at all. No Edge and no phone service. The GPS worked fine and it was still as accurate as my son's Explorist. But again, you must be patient. I think all together we found about 30 or 40 caches out there. Maybe there is something different about the 3Gs. BTW I did download and save the caches where I did have service before we went out. So the data was with me I just didn't have maps (I did this before the last upgrade to geocaching software) but followed the compass and did just fine.
  14. I think I've asked this question before but, where do I sign up to become a professional cacher? I thought we were all "recreational" cachers. And for the record I've found lots of micros with the iphone including a few nanos. It does require patience but it is as accurate at my PN-20 and Explorist it is just so dang slow.

But,but... That's part of the Fun! Actually all of my 10 caches have HTML code in them and don't seem to be affected by the new design. As for in the field use they come down with the necessary info on my PN-20 but I did have to edit the last one a little to get some critical info moved up so it wasn't truncated in the description. The only problem I have with the new layout is the excess white space and the extra long scroll to get from the top to the first of the logs. Also the code/decode information seemed just fine in the old location. My 2 cents. FWIW Mine are hand coded in the editing page on geocaching.com.
  16. Yeah! Perhaps Groundspeak should come up with some kind of family plan. Of course that probably opens up a whole other can of worms.
  17. I have a couple of PMOC out and if a regular member finds it and logs it more power to them. I did not make them PMOCs to exclude any particular cacher. One of them is on a fairly steep slope with loose rock, hence somewhat dangerous so I wanted to eliminate a newby that might get in over his/her head. And I may change its status at some point. The other one is in a high muggle area and I merely wanted to keep traffic down. The other reason that I have for creating PMOCs, and most of my caches are NOT, is to encourage folks to make a financial commitment to the listing service with the hope that those funds might keep the site speed up.
  18. dang... well im gonna wait to sign up for a premium member so untill then i prolly wont get one cause theres a group around here that gets the messages i think, thanks guys That's not necessarily true, there is at least one cache in my area that hasn't been found yet that has been placed for nearly a year! It is a puzzle cache. There was another that went almost 3 months due to difficult location and I have one that has been published for a few days with no find also due to difficult location. So the FTFs are out there even for non-premmies. Don't let that stop you from becoming a Premium member the benefits are more than worth the $30 at least to me.
  19. It sure is a good thing that terrorists can't get an account on geocaching.com and plant their bombs following "most" of the guidelines and properly labeling their bomb as an "official geocache.
  20. As far as I can remember I've only logged one cache that I didn't sign the log book. In that case I went to the cache and found no pen/pencil and I had forgot to bring one. Being lazy I didn't want to walk all the way back to the truck to get a pen. So I took a pic of my GPSr w/ the cache container and sent the pic to the CO. The response I got from him was that he was amazed that in his absence his "Decon" container had turned into a tupperware container. He left the online log stand.
  21. I've got a couple of FTF. But only one was entirely on my own. My sons and I cache as a team and we all share the finds, FTF, etc. Upon occasion we have hit GZ at the same time as one or another local cacher and "we" will search as a team. That being said, FTF is not that big a deal to me. It's a fun little side game but I'm anything but obsessive about it. If a new cache pops up in the area and I've got nothing better to do I'll give it a try but it isn't the main reason that I cache. The problem that I have with the "Professional" FTFers is that they tend to descend on the cache like an army and some of them believe that all is fair in Love and FTF, throw caution to the wind and "dadgum (auto bad word replacement, cool) the torpedoes, full speed ahead." My oldest son has actually came on to the scene of a new cache and found one cacher's truck setting with the door open parked on the sidewalk. I recently put out a new cache in a local park and one cacher logged a STF 12 minutes after the park officially closed for the day. These types of activities may well jeopardize our game. But if you want to log FTF on one of my caches that's up to you, whether you are the first or the hundred first, its your game do as you wish. I do usually leave a FTF prize mostly just to encourage people to go and look. BTW if anyone is interested I recently got GC207EE published and it hasn't been found yet, FTF prize is a ammo-can complete with log, pencil and Geocaching card.
  22. Here's mine. I guess I've got some work to do, but I'm new!
  23. A lot of people do this professionally! Oh.. I see you meant signing for others.
  24. Good luck with that. Most Army Surplus stores sell them for about $6 to $7 one at a time(no shipping) and you're trying to get $20 each? You'll also probably not find too many customers here when it is apparent that you joined the group merely to try and sell a product.
