  1. I had a cacher log one of my caches, and they logged it a total of 6 times, each one with the same log. I can only assume that it was a glitch with either the main site, or one of the smartphone apps. I sent them a friendly email stating that "...you logged the find multiple times (six times, in fact). This can wreck havoc with your caching history" and thanked them for taking the time to find my cache. While I only sent the email earlier today, I was wondering should delete all the duplicate logs?
  2. On one of my caching experiences behind the local walmart, I did come across a decent sized plantation of pot. There was about a dozen plants, each one about 10 feet high... I booked it out of there, and the cache was archived before I could finish the puzzle.
  3. Does the Inka pen smudge??? Nope. It's totally waterproof
  4. I am a huge fan of the Inka pen (http://www.writeanywhere.com/inkapen.html) which writes on wet paper, upside down and even underwater. I love the fact it's small and on a key ring, so it hangs on my caching bag, always handy!!!
  5. I am in Fonthill, though I don't have as much time to cache as I would like. I have always wanted to meet some local caters, but often have to work when the events occur.
  6. Thank you all for the advice. I have decided to pass on the kiln and continue to fire it in the fire pit like I have been. I just won't be able to use a glaze until I find one that works at a lower temperature.
  7. My wife tolerates it to a small extent. She will go on the hikes with me, but does not help in the search. It can be hard to get out of the house, so usually the only way is to take the kids with me. Promise her a quiet house and shes all for it!
  8. I am looking at a Paragon E9S for $50. I have been having a hard time finding much out about it. So I should look for one that fired to around 2000F, right?
  9. That is unfortunate. I thought more went into cones than just temperature. I thought you could fire it at a lower temperate for longer periods of time...
  10. For my signature items, I have been working on small clay figures. I am looking at a kiln but have some questions. I am looking at a Paragon E9S electric kiln. Looks like it has a max temperature of 1650F. Can it get to cone 06? (It's on topic, Moderators, really, it is!!!)
  11. I have wondered the same thing. Do you use it to transfer multiple cache coordinates to your GPSr?
  12. There is a Facebook page for geocachers in the Niagara region (Ontario), but isn't too active
  13. Mine is a compass rose with the geocaching logo and colours in the middle. This reflects what was once my signature (back when non-premium members were allowed them... But that is another rant) which was "Always bring a map and compass; it's awkward when you have to eat your friends" I have always been a fan of map and compass work, and feel it is essential if you will be spending any time in the bush.
  14. There is a cache (GC2AZB9-Canada Day Book Cache) at a campground I go to every year that does exactly what you are talking about. The container was pretty well hidden, and was dry when I was there. I would imagine that container, placement and maintenance would be key for something like this.
  15. Here is most of what I take with me for most caches Garmin eTrex Summit Rite In The Rain notebook (note taking and emergency logs) Nitrile gloves Emergency kit with: Candle Fox 40 Whistle Swedish steel (for fire starting) Small knife Mirror (for signalling, also helps to administer first aid if you cut your face or eye Flashlights with red filters (Red filter helps retain night vision) Bandana (so many uses, I have used it as a head band, emergency bandage, face cloth, coffee filter, etc etc etc) Tweezers (for removing slivers and micro logs) Spare batteries Map and compass (Always have a map and compass, it's awkward when you have to eat your friends...) iPod with Geocaching app Caching Bag with Geopatch Not Shown: Water bottle Inka pen Magnifying glass (for fire starting and to help remove slivers) Walking stick Victorinox swiss army knife Twine Cell phone Bug spray First aid kit
  16. Greetings all! The name is Greg, though I go by the handle Viridios. Viridios is a Gaelic name for the Green Man, which is the personification of the wild places of the world, often seen as a man's face peering out of leaves. While few and far between, it is those places I prefer to cache. I am from Fonthill, Ontario, where I am a full time university student (which greatly cuts into my caching time, unfortunately!) and a father of 2 kids (almost 8 and 5 months). I have had the opportunity to move a few geocoins along, but have none of my own. I know I may not be eligible, since I have been around the forums for a while, but nothing wrong with giving an introduction, right?
  17. Where did you get the Geocaching flag from?? I want one!
  18. I braved an angry non-caching wife on our honeymoon for a smiley... No, seriously though, my wife and I decided to do an Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon, so I brought my GPS (When else would I have the chance to cache in Alaska??). When we got into Skagway, I meekly mentioned that I would like to find at least one cache in Alaska, so my wife was kind enough to let me go (after giving me "The Look" that only a wife can give) to an internet cafe and get a half hour of internet time. When I saw there was a cache nearby (Lil Miss Mollie - GCJT7N), Mandy told me that I had until the half hour of internet time was done to go, find it and return, so off I ran! I quickly found it, and met another cacher there from Oregon (Hi Seales5!), and ran back to the cafe. I made it with 5 minutes to spare! We sailed out of Vancouver, BC, so I was able to log 2 finds there as well!
  19. No, it's not there. It's a known issue with the iPhone/iPod app that has been brought to the attention of GS, and they said they will devise a solution. However, in the meantime, I need to find a way that I can dip my patch without having access to my computer. Would I place the patch with a Found It log, then immediately retrieve it with a Note?
  20. I am unsure where the best place to post this would be, and I assume it will be moved, but here we go anyways!! I use a Trackable Patch (Forum Option #1) to track how far I have travelled in my caching journeys, and have recently downloaded the GC App for my iPod Touch (Forum Option #2). While looking around the app, I noticed that there is no option to visit or dip my patch in the cache when I log it. Has anyone found a workaround that allows me to dip my patch into the cache while still maintaining it in my inventory without waiting until I get home (which thus negates the benefit of creating my log while on-site!) *Edited for clarification*
  21. Garmin eTrex Summit I just hate having to sit down before I leave and write down all the details for each cache I am looking for. I am also hoping to add all the caches in my area into my GPS, and should I find myself near one, I can pull the cache up from the iPod and get the details (mainly the maps, so I know what roads to go on). Sounds like if this is what I want I am just going to have to bite the bullet and get a premium account...
  22. Does having a premium membership make it easier to load multiple caches into the Touch?
  23. I have recently received an iPod Touch 4Gen as a gift, and am really interested in getting the Official Geocaching App and using it for paperless caching. I have looked around the forums, and I have noticed that much talk has been given to Pocket Queries, and how the Touch can filter them. I am a basic member, and cannot run PQs. I am a student with a family, so money is tight, and I am worried about purchasing the Geocaching app if it is next to worthless. How much information can be saved to the Touch for offline use? I know I have to be near Wi-fi to update. Am I able to choose the caches I want to go for, save them, and pull up the info offline? Am I able to get everything, or just the Name, GC number, and coordinates? Can I get the hints, and past logs saved as well? Are there any basic member app users out there who can help me out on this? Would a different app be a better choice?
  24. There is a cache in this area that does have a padlock. It is one of those padlocks that uses words, not numbers as a combination. The cache in question is part of a puzzle cache, and the cache page directs you to a sign nearby. From that sign, you take the 3rd, 10th, etc. letter , and rearrange them to come up with the code! The padlock was on a red metal toolbox. When opened, it contained 50 or so film canisters, all of which contained little papers that said "Sorry, this isn't the one!" and none of which contained the coordinates to the final. I was rather confused, until I turned the toolbox over. Turns out I didn't even need to open it to get the coordinates!!
