  1. Thanks all for your replies. I have removed the note and will email the member who placed it. BTW: ReadyOrNot : The cache is on the Bandstand which is on the football field which is directly behind (and inside the enclosed fence) the High School. I am sure it is not "grandfathered" as I have been a geocacher and a member here since 2004 and that rule was in place when I started. Clint || KyHilltopper
  2. I went looking for a cache (GCZQH3) today and found it was on Public School property. If I read the Guidelines correctly that is not allowed. I could not find any way to notify GS that the cache was not in compliance. Anybody know how I do this? I did post a note on the cache. Clint || KyHilltopper
  3. It's been done. The first cache I ever did was a multi where there are 5 first stages, all close to each other. Each has the coordinates of a cache but only one is actually the second stage of the cache. All the others are stand alone caches in the area. April Fool Cache Do it! It makes the hunt a little more interesting and fun. Clint || KyHilltopper
  4. To answer the original question of where to buy Lock & Locks... Target carries them. Clint || KykHilltopper
  5. I bought a Zire 21 at Office Max and they even had a $10 off rebate deal. Works very well, I can see it in the sun and if I sit on it and destroy it, I'm only out $59. I have even started carrying it at work and now is my "note book" for numbers, addresses etc. Clint || KyHilltopper
  6. "at the risk of starting another flame war (not my intention)..." You could go to terracaching.com and join that community in addition to being a member here. TC allows Locationless Caches and has quite a list. Some are interesting and some are not. The difficulty that made them unmanageable here on GC also exsists on TC. The site is young enough that there are still some LCs with few enough entries to make them searchable for prior submissions without paging through hundreds if not thousands of cachers before you. What ever you chose, keep the idea (not the politics) of caching formost in your mind. KyHilltopper || Clint
  7. I recently bought a brand new Zire 21 at Office Depot for $69 and followed the instructions on Geocaching U and it works very well. I have two different files loaded, one for my home area and one for the area where my daughter lives in New Hampshire. Hope to see you at some of the River Valley Geocachers Events. We are located in SE MO, West KY, Southern IL, and Northwest TN. KyHilltopper Clint edited to add invitation.
  8. I went and looked at the Cachemate page. There is alot to it. At first glance it looks like it replaces Spinner and Plucker. Is my quick assumption correct? KyHilltopper
  9. I got a good deal on a Palm Zire 21, went to Geocaching U and printed out the instructions, downloaded and installed all the software, got my PQ, entered everything and then it hit me.... I still have to make some kind of note of the cache I found, what I left/took etc. Entering notes using the notepad on the Palm is a little cumbersome and certainly not handy to do so in the woods. It seems a tad silly to carry a small notebook when I've gone to all the trouble to eliminate the paper. So what does does the paperless crowd do? I am open to suggestions. KyHilltopper Clint
  10. I think that TNLNSL tells me alot. If I see a preponderance of those in the logs of a cache, I would probably leave that one for a day I'm just looking for numbers (not often). A lack of logs would not tell me the same thing. I am fairly sure when I see a group of TNLNSL's that this is a cache worth missing. my 2 cents KyHilltopper
  11. Was, not is. Jeep ran a contest not too long ago that gave away prizes for finding, logging and writing a story about the 4X4 Yellow Jeep TBs they put out. The contest is over. I never found one even though there were plenty in the area. Some folks took and kept them, or passed them between friends only. There is more to the story, but that should give you an idea. 12. Unless it is an integral part of finding the cache, DON'T. While I and lots of others have broadband there are still many who do this with dial up and the download time can be entirely too long. This subject has been addressed before and I believe the general concensus is, to not add audio to the posting. My $.02 KyHilltopper Clint
  13. I found a county map at my local Chamber of Commerce that has most of the parks highlighted in green. The county in which I live is a Recreational area on the west shore of Kentucky Lake so these spots are a tourist draw and I have been slowly planting caches at the parks that have Boat Launches. I have 3 now in a series called Float Your Boat. However dumb luck sometimes cannot be beat. Yesterday I found a series of trails in the next county that is not on any map I have found (and I have found more than a few - I like maps - I like them alot). Good luck and keep searching. 14. Snoogins: "There's more than one lane on the geocaching highway. On the geocaching highway, I happily ride in all of its lanes and I don't blow through the toll booths.-Snoogans 12/24/04" is the most profound of all. Not necessarilly humorous, but profound. Clint the KyHilltopper
  15. I'll take the road less traveled on this one. I have and use (at most times) a Gilson active antenna. I have tested the difference on many occasions and my GPS (Garmin 76) always has more sats aquired, and a smaller error distance with the external than without. The ability to put the GPS in the cup holder in the truck, with the antenna on the roof is worth what you will pay in the safety aspect alone. Not having to try and read the unit on the dash close the windshied where the fixed antenna can see the sky is priceless. And yes, I wear it on my hat in dense cover. I am even considering getting another one with a shorter cable so I don't have to wind up the cable and put a rubber band around it so I don't trip on it or catch it on the brush while bushwacking. As far as being conspicuous (sp?) in the deep woods, I don't care, and I don't need or use the external antenna when in parks or tracking down a sneaky lamp post micro in the URBAN undergrowth. Clint
  16. I lucked out and found a local flea market type place in Murray Kentucky who has 30 cal cans for $2 each. He buys ammo cans by the pallet and only wants the 50 cal to sell as tool boxes ($7) and is more than happy when I show up to buy the little ones. Clint
  17. I came late to this party late so I had to go through and read the whole topic (whew!!). I noticed that Effrem lists a personal web site so I went to see how much space he gave to the relief effort on his own site. Welllllll whadya know --- ZIP - NADA - ZILCH - as in NOTHING.... He only feels strongly about the subject here. So it seems to me ( I could be wrong, I've been wronger before about much more important things) that our dear brother Effrem cares about GC guidlines interpretations much more than he actually cares about the relief effort. Did I read that right or did I miss something??? KyHilltopper Clint
  18. Are you asking about those little aluminum tubes with a loop at one end? If so, those are Bison Tubes and are available at Sissy-n-CR's store KyHilltopper
  19. I have to agree with 4X4. You really are better off finding a few before you try to hide one. There are lots of different types and once you do a couple of these types you will have an idea of what gos in what. The minimum is a log book. Many micros have just that. They are often too small for even a pencil, and the cache page will tell you to bring your own pen or pencil (which is good idea no matter what size or type the cache). The larger the container the more lattitude you have in what you can include. I checked your profile page and did not find a location. You might want to find your local Caching group and send an email about meeting some of them and getting into that way. Here in Western KY / Southern Ill / East Missouri we have the River City Geocachers and we always welcome newcomers. And you might want to try the local are forums (farther down the list) for Meet & Greets and Dining outs where you can meet the others in your neighborhood. Welcome to the addiction. 20. Try TVNAV.com. When I was looking to upgrade my GPSr they were the least expensive that I found. Great customer service and good prices. And, no I am not connected in any way other than a satisfied customer. Clint KyHilltopper
  21. What snat said. It is hard to tell someone, either in a log or in person that the cache they placed lacks imagination, thought or effort. In this area we have some cachers that place excellent caches and if I see a new one by some folks I know it is worth the hike. Others place caches that are not always as good. Here's the problem. We live in a small community and interact with each other on a regular basis, in the logs, on the forums and in person. Some take even the mention that their cache is less than wonderful as an insult. I was taught to "play nice" but I was also taught to tell the truth. So do I not call a Lame a Lame and continue to play or do I confront and offend? I keep my critisism to myself and put my compliments in writing. Just the way I see it. Clint
  22. I had such a great time at lewy's West Kentucky Wildlife, a cache out in a wildlife area, that I have been back a few times. What draws me back is a small, shallow warm water pond where I can spend 15 minutes with an Ultralight fishing rod and catch 2 to 3 dozen bluegills. An absolute blast for anyone who likes to fish.
  23. I have sent an email using the email feature on a profile page. Is there any way to know if the email bounced, that is, was undeliverable? I suspect that the person has changed his ISP and has not updated the gc website as he has been inactive for awhile. I have 3 email addresses for him but 2 of them bounce and the third has not received any response, so I sent one through the feature, but I am thinking that it is linked to one of "user not known" ISPs. Any ideas? Clint KyHilltopper
  24. I can see how you can easily be confused. Only that part of Texas west of Fort Worth is west. Dallas is, for all intents and purposes, the same as Philly or New York City. East Texas is more Louisiana than not and from Austin down, is truely the south. Of course except for Brownsville, which is Mexico. I hope that clears things up. Been there, done that. KyHilltopper (now back home in Kentucky where I belong). Clint
