  1. No one has to pay for a premium membership. If you want to find an occasional cache. Go online, print off the cache details, hand enter the coordinates into a navigation app, and go find the cache. That's how I found my first 100. Well I used a little yellow geko but the process would be the same.
  2. My feeling is if you expect your 7 year old to still be using this gps in 5 years or so when he might be caching alone in strange territory, spring for the 20. If he will mostly be caching with older kids and adults, the 10 is fine for now.
  3. One other possible solution is an older smart phone with a good gps. It could be used by your son with no data plan and no cell service, If you loaded cache via wifi. I don't use a cell phone and can't say how easy the various apps ar but there are many enthusiastic advocates on these boards
  4. Click the column make a copy. The new query will be added to list as copy of. You can then edit the query. I am not sure I ever tried this with a route query but I think it should work.
  5. If the area of. A pocket query includes more than the requested caches, the returned list includes the caches by some algorithm, distance I think. When you sort them by favorite points, you have changed the criteria so the algorithm changes and you get the caches with the most favorite points. I usually select the distance based on how far I am willing to travel. This can then be sorted by a variety of criteria without changing what caches are included.
  6. I use aDelorme pn60 but I can't help because I've never had that problem. I would suggest trying the DeLorme forums. I would suggest calling customer support which used to be excellent but I haven't tried it since Garmin bought the company. A solution for a number of flaky problems in the past has been to remove the batteries and leave them out for several hours. I tend to regard this as voodoo since I don't know of any rational reason why it should work.
  7. To amplify a bit, if your pq returns exactly the number of caches you requested, it is almost certain that there are other caches in the area that meet your criteria. If you want all the caches that meet your criteria, tweak the distance covered or your criteria. One way to get all the caches in a larger area is to use date placed as one of you criteria.
  8. I think one of the problems is lots of people don't really read things. They skim them and remember what they think it said. I know this happens to me often. This time it didn't. I solved the puzzle for fun but fully expected if I didn't I could go to the home page or the blog and find the information to get the souvenir. I also did not expect to receive another email since the email listed where the information would be found on Saturday morning. I enjoyed having time to plan what cache I was going to look for although bad weather and a family crisis meant I needed to change my plans at the last minute. Of the Summer promotions, I think my favorite so far was last year's road trip. Nice variety and time to plan.
  9. I am confused why all the passion. You choose to use a smart phone. I choose a handheld gpsr. My decision makes no difference to you. Yours makes no difference to me. Why are you so committed to trying to change my mind about what I use.
  10. In the past when there has been a problem with some mails not going through, it has frequently been a problem with a specific provider slowing or blocking emails from geocaching. It would probably help sort out the problem if you mentioned your provider. Perhaps you did that in your trouble ticket.
  11. I would look at caches near the area you are going to be visiting. Read the profiles and some of the logs of people who have hidden nearby caches. What I would be looking for is someone who has hidden a few caches and maintains them well. It would probably be a good sign if they mention kids or grandkids in their logs. Ask if they are interested in hiding another cache. Then share your plan and then see if they are interested. It would be their cache but it could be special for your son. It might work and I think it's the only way that it would.
  12. The fix has been deployed. If you are still having a problem, post to the thread in the release thread.
  13. I don't know if this is helpful but I found the slider seems to work if you edit the query after it has been submitted. I had this problem, submitted the query with no day selected and found the slider worked the next time I tried. I didn't do extensive experiments so that may have been coincidental. .
  14. I tried running a pq and every thing worked as expected. The pq is available on the ready to download tab. More information on your set up and process might help figure out the problem. Do you have a setup that allows you to download using the api?
  15. Zero caches usually means you have selected conflicting criteria. For example there is no cache that you have both found and not found. If you want the inquiry to include both found and unfound select neither. Try only selecting I have not found and are available. Then preview it without selecting a day to run. If the results are what you expected choose a day which can be today and run it.
  16. I'm a little surprised this hasn't been moved to the UK section of the forum. They may provide more local expertise.
  17. It depends on how much time you spend on the write up. I usually don't do much write up but do supply cache name, type, d and t ratings and sometimes a hint. You can add a more complete description if you want.
  18. I do this using GSAK. I mark the spot using one of the Gps. Then I upload the waypoints to GSAK. I then fill out the fields I want to use and then upload them back to the Gps. It works quite well. You can try GSAK for free. The only problem is if you use a MAC. I am not sure what similar software is available.
  19. I assume you are running it to add the finds to some kind of database. You can simply use a regular pq to add the caches you found to your finds database or simply download the individual gpx files one at a time. The only reason to use the my finds quarry is if you need to have more than 1000 results or to include archived caches.
  20. I don't thing this is allowed by the site guidelines nor do I think it meets the guidelines for an Eagle Project. It seems to lack a leadership component and also would not be a lasting contribution to the community. It is also not practical given the attrition rate for travel bugs.
  21. This solution may be the best solution to the problems but it is a guideline violation. By posting it in the forum rather than simply logging it on line you may cause a fun cache to be archived. On the other hand, it is possible that if the problems with the cache were caused by a small group of idiots enough time has passed and the cache can be rehidden in conformance with the guidelines. Time will tell.
  22. This sounds like your initial intention is to set up a cache for a private event and then leave part of it as a permanent cache on the website. I don't think that would be published but there is no problem with you doing this as an activity and then having the final design published if it meets all requirements.
  23. I use a DeLorme 60. The ability to have multiple files of caches on the unit is helpful and the mapping software chat comes with it is quite good. It is being discounted now but support may be iffy.
  24. I don't think you can see cache info without logging in but you can use the account of a friend or family member. It also is possible to find coordinates in other ways- exif data on photos or utube videos for esample. Also I think some Garmin gpses came with preloaded caches. Also a significant number of caches were cross listed on Garmin's opencaching site. Is that still accessible? I'm not sure why anyone would go to so much trouble we you can just register with a throw away email.
