  1. No matter how you look at it this weather is better than Indiana, LOL

Right now, at 9:30 am, it is 62 degrees in Palm Harbor. It's 8 degrees in Urbana Indiana. That's a difference of, ummm

    54 degrees

forecast is in the mid seventies for today! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA :):anibad::blink::o:D:D;):):(:(:(

  2. This is a bit of a rant, but I intend it more of an information tool for those that are starting out.

Many times a cache is hidden (evilly) to make it a challenge for the searchers.

To me, the main reason is not to hide it necessarily from cachers, but to keep it safe from non-cachers (muggles), so that it doesn't get destroyed, or taken from not knowing what it is.

    So

I have a cache that is hidden in a hollow tree that is about a foot in diameter with several holes all around it at varying heights. The cache is suspended inside the tree on a rusty wire hook on the edge of one of the holes, that blends perfectly with the old wood, and is almost impossible to see if you aren't looking closely, so I find it highly unlikely that anyone other than a cacher handled it.

A couple of days ago I did a drive by to check on it, and there it was, nice and dray and in good shape, hanging on the outside of the tree!

I don't know why someone would do this ... maybe in such a hurry to get to the next cache that they couldn't be bothered, or maybe just couldn't be bothered!

And it's not the first time, with other caches over the years, and also not just the new people either!

PLEASE! re-hide the cache as you found it as best you can. If you're with a group and you didn't personally find the cache and see how it was hidden, then get the person that did find it to re-hide it. And please don't take it upon yourself to hide it "better" than the cache owner, unless it has obviously fallen from a perch and is in the open on the ground or some such. And if you do, put that in your log so the CO can deal with the situation.

    BC

Some do that just because they didn't like your cache so they leave it exposed so it'll be muggled.

Why do some people find it necessary to quote an entire long original post, even when it's right on top of their reply? This is the third time it's happened in this short thread.

Enough finders mess up caches that it discourages hiders. Groups are the worst, especially when it comes to trampling an area down...

  3. You could always bake a real one, hollow it out to insert the container, shellac it and tell people it is fake.

Baking is not required if you harvest it at the right time. (Having once had a kennel of 26 Huskies, I know my poop). Too fresh and it's too mushy to work with. Too old (sunbaked) and it's too hard/brittle. You want it firm and still malleable so you can insert your micro container in it. Marine Varnish works better than shellac, the more coats the better. The idea of gluing some roughage on it, hair or bits of bone, is a good idea, to give it that "wild" look. :)

  4. Often folks like to use containers that used to hold food. The problem is that even when thoroughly washed many animals can smell the food. This can lead them to chew on the container. That said, some people have had good luck with things like peanut butter jars. Whatever you do don't use glass. It is too easily broken.

Plastic Peanut butter jars and Mayo jars make good containers. Wash them out with hot water and bleach. One way to reinforce them is to wrap with camo tape, or duct tape, then paint. They are water tight if the lids are tightened down by screwing them down clockwise until resistance is met. Unfortunately a fairly large percentage of geocachers aren't quite certain how to do that. :(

  5. Patchy fog early in the morning...then partly cloudy. Highs in the upper 60s. Northeast winds around 5 mph becoming west in the afternoon.HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

REST OF THE COUNTRY: Bitter cold winter storms, ice and snow.HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    LET'S GO GEOCACHNG!!! :D

  6. We saw a weather map of Florida the other day and the ONLY part of Florida north of Miami that wasn't colored BLUE for freeze warnings was Pinellas County!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

AND CACHERS UP NORTH ARE HAVING TO DIG IN THE (UGH) SNOW TO FIND CACHES!

Forecast for Tomorrow for Palm Harbor is a high of 70 DEGREES.

  7. It's freezing! Ok, not literally but I feel freezing! I hid 2 caches yesterday and they'll go unfound until it warms up!

This is horrible. The heat is turned on!? Ugh

Looks like your last three hides were found the next day. That's pretty good. I think location and difficulty has more impact on how soon newly published caches are found than the weather... unless there's a hurr :anibad: icane in progress!

  8. I've got a photo of a benchmark I'm trying to log as found but can't find any specific on this benchmark on Geocaching.com.

BOBBY, WHY NOT POST YOUR PHOTO OF THE BENCHMARK HERE?

If you can't find it in the listings geographically, then it's not there. The problem is, that only certain types of Benchmarks are listed on GC.com, whereas everybody and his brother places these monuments-- various State agencies, other federal agencies besides USCGS, Counties, municipalities and evenprivate companies. Only a fraction of these are listed on GC.com

  9. How bad are the mosquitoes this time of year? We will be visiting the Lakeland area around Christmas and hope to get out to find some Florida caches.

It varies right now, but by around Christmas it should be pretty good. The worst time of day is dawn/dusk and in the deep woods/swampy/wet areas. It's been getting a little better the past few weeks, but I've cached in woods in middle of day and it's ok. I started getting bit a few hours before sunset and beyond. Summer/early fall in the woods, forget it.

NO WORRIES AT CHRISTMAS, MATE--TOO COLD FOR THEM!!!

  10.

Finders were told "Geocaches can be logged online as Found once the physical log has been signed."

Some people read this new guideline to mean that the physical log must be signed. Of course that is not what it says.

Of course that IS what it says. Words have meanings. Nouns and verbs. Pretty simple.

  11.

The problem is that some people are viewing the online find log as a "score".

Because it IS a score, everybody knows it, and pretending it's not does not alter reality...And it is NOT a "problem". It's certainly a stat, that cannot be denied, and it's one of the stats we use to gauge our performance or experience or participation level against a standard or other players. It makes it more FUN! :(
