Geocaching.com site update May 22nd 2012
Raine replied to colin's topic in Geocaching HQ communications
This is very frustrating and is not the behavior of any Google Map I have ever used. Clicking anywhere other than the popup should close the popup, plain and simple. https://google-developers.appspot.com/maps/documentation/javascript/examples/infowindow-simple Even the google sample shows that clicking away from the info window will not close the window. It's the default behavior for InfoWindows. -Raine -

Can you explain further? -Raine -
If they bring Google maps back to PM, I will have no problem dumping my GM script. If they ask for more money for a PM I will be upset. If the ask for more money to allow PM's to get Google maps but what they have now for no increase of my PM my GM script will probably stay. Edit: But then this begs the question is what we get back; the previous beta maps with all the warts and problems, the current leaflet framework with all its warts and problems or a whole new kettle of fish with new warts and new problems. Some times it is good to be wary of what you wish for. jholly - Outside of the complains about satellite images loading slowly, and other map tile related issues, what other 'warts' does the Leaflet map have that need to be addressed? -Raine

Geocaching.com site update March 13th 2012

It shows bother Metric and Imperial so your profile has no bearing on this. Are you saying it's not sitting to the right of the slider bar and if so, what browser and version number are you using? -Raine -

Very strange. I'm still seeing exactly what I posted above, even after a hard-refresh. The scale is just to the right of and tied to the side bar, and shows both metric and imperial. FWIW, I'm using FF 10.0.2. ETA: Just to cover all the bases, I tried clearing my cache. Still shows the same. What browser and version number are you using? -Raine -
PQs were running slow this morning. You should see them arrive soon. -Raine

Leaflet, the map framework, just released a scale control which is being implemented in the next release. -
Can you give a link to the location you're referring to?

We just updated the MapQuest OSM layer to use the JPG images instead of PNG so the tiles should load faster now. Avg PNG image was 105k vs ~25k for the JPG images. Do a hard refresh of your browser to get the new tiles to load. -Raine -

EXCELLENT!! As for the amount of requests made to Google, it's been said before, but wouldn't making Google Maps a premium only feature reduce them enough? We can't legally include those map types in our new maps because of Google's license agreements. -Raine -

You will notice the default map is not pointing to OSM's tile server. They are pointing to MapQuests OSM servers. You have to physically switch to OSM's tile servers to create any load on them. What exactly is the issue there? We've explained why the maps had to do the change, people have guesstimated on the attributed costs that we would incure if we stuck with Google maps. -Raine Umm, I do believe you have the wrong quote. I was talking about the people who are threatning to drop their premium membership because of it. Darn forum software -

I've fixed the checkerboard issue with the maps. If you do a hard refresh of your browser, this should go away. -Raine

We're working on the performance issues with the maps. Having everyone want to come and play with the new ones have overwhelmed the system! I'll update more as I can. Sorry folks! -Raine -

Instead of applying another band-aid to this situation we're in the processing of preparing to upgrade our database tables to support Unicode characters. I've delayed the hot-fix until we can perform regression testing on these changes.

That's a common misconception. Location information obtained from the cell network cannot be used to improve the accuracy of a location obtained from GPS. Never ever. Citation?

Now that Seattle is starting to thaw out from our Snowpocalypse 2012 and we've all made it back into the office we will be doing a hot-fix this afternoon. -Raine

Sadly we're having to move away from Google's Geocoder which returned the different types. You're going to have to be a bit more specific until we can get a more robust Geocoder in place for those ambiguous searches.

Well I personally don't but every cache log that happens I've been scrapping the .00001 favorite points into a slush account, just don't tell anyone -Raine -

A few people on here have expressed the desire to not see the last 5 recently viewed cache list on the My Profile page. In our next release there will be an option to hide that section. Going forward we'll try to make these types of things configurable. -Raine -
