  1. I just have a handheld...I do have a car gps, but it is not able to take in coordinates. So what I do is to look up the caches on the map, and map out which ones I want to go for (when I'm doing local, or look at a route when traveling, etc), and just put those into my gps. I've recently just started numbering them, and typing the coordinates out with their name and which number they corrispond to, so when I get home I know which ones they are, and I put them into my gps by number. I have to do it one by one by hand...I don't have a cord...it's a pain, but it's fine. Mine is a Garmin Etrex Legend...it's an older one, but I bought it off craigslist for $50. It can sometimes be off a little, and the arrow bounces a little, but I can find the caches with some looking usually. Works enough for me, for right now, until I can get a nicer one!
  2. Thanks for the tip on the cord...and for the link to the abbreviations. I found them all but TTO?
  3. Still somewhat a noobie, only been caching a couple times, but I get the gist of most things. I was making some lists of caches in separate areas, so I can input them together (no cord for my GPS, bought it used)...and I came across a few abbreviations that I don't know what they are, and haven't seen much, elsewhere. I thought I'd seen a thread of abbreviations on here, somewhere, at some point, but now I can't seem to find that. Some help please?? What do URP, PAF and TTO mean? I just wrote them down when I saw them, so I can't be sure now where that was...I think it was mostly in cache pages or their logs, but one of them might have been here on the forums. Another question...about the GPS cords. I have a Garmin Etrex Legend, it came with no cords or anything (bought used). Is there a cord you can get to transfer coordinates directly to it from the computer? I looked a bit, and if I'm right, you use the PC interface cable to do that, right? What about if you have a MAC, does that make a difference in cords you can get or anything?? I have a laptop, so there's no interface cord inputs, only USBs. Any info would help greatly...it takes quite a while to input all the coords by hand!
  4. Thanks!! I realize that, but it's easier to delete older ones I've found, and put in all the ones for the day, as the only ones in the GPS, and then I know they are all right around each other, and not have to worry about driving all over or having to look them up to see how far/where they are in relative distance to where I am or another cache.
  5. When I'm preparing to go out caching, I will look up the caches on googlemaps first, so that I can put in coordinates according to relativity, so as not to be going in circles. When you look at them on the map, there are about 8 different types of icons, but I cannot figure out what they each mean. Can someone please point me somewhere that tells what they stand for?? Thanks!
  6. Can someone explain archived caches to me a little better, please? I haven't looked into it too much, but I've read a couple things in passing, that you can archive a cache when the owner doesn't watch over it anymore, or something's wrong with it, but that you can also still find and log an archived cache...but what's the point of archiving it, if it's still findable and loggable, and whats the purpose? I'm just confused...Thanks.
  7. Thanks! I had looked through those videos, and saw that, but forgot about it, so I'll definitely check it out!
  8. the cheap ebay juck may or may not work on a pc, but if you want it to work on a Mac, take your advice from someone who has been down that road before... Thanks!!
  9. I got it for $40. Nothing came with it, and the clip on the back is missing. But it does work and it's in good condition, and the guy said he had also just upgraded the maps on it too. I figure, for my very first, it's at least good enough for now.
  10. I have NO idea. I just got it, and it's the new 13.3 aluminum macbook. Thanks for the links, I'll check them all out!
  11. Okay...well, I didn't get the cable or anything with the unit, so I might look into getting one. And I'll need the adapter, cause I just got my laptop this month (and it's a MAC, does that matter? I'm not a techie and don't know much about the differences between PC and mac, but I noticed everyone say PC). Thanks for the replies!!
  12. I just got my gps off craigslist, it's a garmin etrex legend. I know it may not be the best out there, but I'm a total newbie, I've not even been yet (though DYING to go!). I figured, if anything, just having one is better than not at all! So, how do I go about using it? I mean, am I able to put caches and all that kind of stuff into it? Or do you have to be a premier member? And if I can, then how do I do that stuff?? Otherwise, I'm guessing I will just have to write down coordinates and info for each cache I want to hunt for the day, and put them each in as I go? Any help would be great. Thanks! Oh another question I had, I'll just throw it in here.... ETA - Do baby food jars make good containers for chaches? I have lots of them, so I could use a couple when they are empty...eventually, when I want to hide some. What about those smallish coolers that have drinking spouts on the top?? There are a couple at the thrift store for cheap, and you know they wouldn't leak...anyone use them?
