  1. Here's the situation. I received the following notification on a cache of mine. It is on public land along a bike path but is in a tree close to some back yard fences, one of which is where my daughter lives and she and her husband know of the cache. It is directly behind their house. It was meant to be a fun cache. The cache in question is Like Hey Dude! Like find My Cache. GC236KY "You are receiving this email because you are the owner of this listing. Location: Ontario, Canada (deleted) couldn't find Like Hey Dude! Like find My Cache. (Traditional Cache) at 1/22/2010 Log Date: 1/22/2010 Went by this one on my way home from work. As soon as I got into some trees wher the gps was pointing to, this really annoying voice started screaming "get out of there!" over and over again neatly timed with yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap. "This is private property! Go smoke your joints somewhere else!" O_o "You better get out of here! I'm calling the cops!" Which I replied "nope this is public property; Do you see me smoking anything? And go ahead call the cops so I can register a noise complaint against your (edited out) loud mouth rat" Although most of what I said was dround out by their (edited out) loud mouthed rat. I continued looking for the next couple minutes but couldn't see anything. Although I was really tempted to light up a smoke just to (deleted) her off as much as her and her rat made me. But figured I should just keep moving, even if I did find it they were watching me and we couldn't have that. I suggest this be moved away from this area, just so I dont have to listen to that (edited out) any more or her rat. If fact anyone else willing to take this one on, make sure you find it before they find you and then make as much noise as possible just to drive that rat and her (edited out) up the wall." The finder has only 27 finds so is new at this. I think his attitude sucks. I plan to contact my daughter's neighbour to explain the situation and hope that they will be cool with its being there. If not I will probably move the cache.
  2. As I see it this does not give you the milage that you travelled but only the milage as the crow flies between cache finds. For instance if I log a cache and then the next cache find is 6 miles ATCF but I need to drive 30 miles to get there then the milage logged will be 6 miles but I have travelled 30 miles. So it is not truly my geocaching distance. So what's the point of all of this dipping of trackables?
  3. To quote CacheDrone from a thread in the Canada forums on the same topic. "Agreed of course that winter can be a factor, which can always be expressed. However, as stated in the other thread and in by the quote from the OP, the sweep will be done quarterly. Thus the minimum spacing would be seven months for any single cache. Example 1. Last find was 21 DEC ... my sweep on 21 MAR would ignore it, my sweep on 21 JUN would cause me to look at it, possibly disable it, then 22 JUL would be one month after disabling and if nothing updated then it likely would be archived. Of course, this is all if the CO does absolutely nothing. Example 2. Last find was 21 JUN... my sweep on 21 SEP would ignore it, my sweep on 21 DEC would cause me to look at it, possibly disable it, then 22 JAN would be one month after disabling and if nothing updated then it likely would be archived. Of course, this is all if the CO does absolutely nothing. Naturally, if the CO logs on and says "The cache site is buried under snow, I'll check it in the Spring... that is fine. On the 21 MAR sweep would be another 'nudge' and if they can't get their listing enabled by 21 JUN then I see no reason why the listing should remain. At that point we would be talking about an entire year having passed. CO's do have to taken some sort of responsibility for their caches, and responding to queries about the conditions of their cache would be one of them. Also, remember that we are talking about "not found in over 6 months" and that being done once every three months. So the examples above are the absolute bare minimum. Many would likely be in the neighbourhood of 8 months with no real action being taken for a total of 9 months. Lastly, nearly every geocache that has been archived can be unarchived if the CO (and no one else) contacts the reviewer. I unarchive stuff all the time as long as it is still compliant with the current listing guidelines." I know that CacheDrone says, "possibly disable it", but with his then going on to say, "if nothing updated then it likely would be archived", how could one not easily jump to the conclusion that one needs to check on his cache that has been unfound for 6 months esp if he sees the note on his cache page. I have a cache "Teapot Lake Cache GCX34F" in a remote area that only gets found about once or twice a year since being placed in July 2006 and another one that is nearby placed by another cacher "OF4WD Series: Black Lake Trail GCQBE6" that gets very little traffic since being placed in 29 August 2005. These caches are there but not sought out often, so do we really need to make the trek in to satisfy CacheDrone or anyone else? Just my 2cents.
  4. Has anyone used Crossover Mac and GSAK and how does it suit your geocaching needs? I have a mac computer and would like to use it for my geocaching but have been unhappy with the mac programs available at this time. I've tried Maccaching and don't like Parallels or Bootcamp. I am currently using an old laptop with windowsXP and GSAK to get caches to my Oregon 400t, and POI loader to get them onto my nuvi using a macro. I would like to be able to do all of this on my mac without opening windows. From the thread http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=237156 Jan 4 2010, 03:02 PM "I just downloaded the trial version of crossover and was able to get GSAK running on it with no issues." From the forum at Crossover mac Date: 2009-11-05 23:19 Garmin GPS 60cs "All the functions of the Gsak program that I have tried work good, but it is a large program rich on options. The most important option still eludes me. I can't get the program to download to my GPS. I this it is a gps driver problem." Any feedback on this would be appreciated. Thanks rovers3
  5. I can use it on my Oregon by dragging the iso to the micro sd card that shows as a drive on my mac or use a card reader. On my Oregon 400t I can see the lakes in blue but they are not named at all zoom levels and the name does not show at the top when the pin is on them. For instance when you hover over Lake Simcoe it shows as "LAKE" at 3km but as "LAKE SIMCOE" at the 5km zoom. Also in Toronto, most of the streets and highways do not show the names either on the map or when the pin is placed on them it just shows as road. This is also true for many of the roads in other places in Ontario that I checked. Hope this helps.
  6. I got the same but then in the torrent I clicked on open URL and cut and pasted the link and it seems to have worked at least I hope it worked. First time that I'm using a torrent for downloading anything. After 24 hours I am at 55%, sure is going slow.
  7. This guy loves the Triton and you might find what you are looking for on his site. I have nothing to do with it but came across it when I was checking out the Triton. I have a Triton 1500 that I don't use, I have switched to Garmin Oregon 400t. http://www.jungleghost.com/ Hope this helps.
  8. This was sent to me the other day. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles...-Computing.aspx Good for geocaching?
  9. FYI - Just upgraded the 400t and it seems to lock on to satellites much faster. Siting inside at my computer and it is locked on by the time it has booted up. Used to take longer and had to place it away from the front of the computer before. Hope it works as well outside in the boonies.
  10. Sometimes a log can be taken the wrong way by the CO. For instance I was out the other day and found a cache in a guardrail at the end of a dead end road. It's a 1.0/1.5. In the description "This is a standard drive-up micro that will help break up an evening of multis or caches with tougher terrain!" My log "Quick find while we were in the area today. Hardly worth while letting geodog out of the vehicle." There is a dogs allowed attribute for the cache. There is a field beyond the guardrail but it was very icy, I received an email from the CO that said too bad I was disappointed by the cache and suggested another for me to try. I replied and assured him that it was what I was expecting to find but I had let the dog out of the vehicle for all of 3 minutes, so she didn't get to run around.
  11. Was out caching today and this is what I discovered about the new geocaching dashboard. If you go straight to the dashboard, the closest cache name is displayed at the top. if you want to go to that cache you can either follow the arrow and distance bar or click on the name and then go which brings you back to the map screen to begin navigating. If you want a different cache then click on the icon for that cache and then go or from the geocaches screen click find a cache, click on the one you want and then click go. Go to the map screen and that cache name is at the top and the arrow and distance shown is for that cache. When you then want to see information about that cache yoy can click on the name or the geocache logo on the right which brings up the screen with description, show logs, show hint etc, and you can log your find from there. I hope that helps.
  12. Just checked again and now it's doing the same as yours. That's strange.
  13. Haven't seen that. With my 400t I can still point to a cache icon on the map, name of cache shows at top, click on that and all info comes up with the GO button in the bottom right corner and click that to go to the cache. This is the same as before.
  14. I have a Zagg screen protector on the Oregon. Don't know if it would srink at a different rate. The batteries I was using were the Powerex 2700, fully charged and only the second time I was using them. The weather was hovering around the freezing point, small amount of ice around the water's edge and we were out of the wind. Yesterday, same batteries, same temperature I had no problems caching all day but I was holding the unit in my hand or it was in my pocket, not hanging out in the open, so the extra warmth seemed to help.
  15. This has happened to me twice now since the weather is getting colder. I was out caching with my Oregon 400t and the outside weather was around freezing. The unit was attached to the strap on a case that I carry over my shoulder so was not in contact with my body. These were new, fully charged powerex batteries that I was using. When I went to click on an item on the touch screen it was sssoooo sssslllloooowwww in responding. At first I didn't see any response, then the item I touched was highlighted in blue and then it eventually went to the screen that it was supposed to go to. The time taken for this was in the neighbourhood of 30-60sec and was repeated on subsequent clicks of the screen. I then pulled the batteries to shut off the unit and rebooted it and the same thing occurred. I then pulled the batteries and warmed them up, warmed up the unit, replaced the batteries and it functioned okay the rest of the day as long as I kept it in my hand or in a warm area like my pocket. I don't recall this happening last year and I don't recall having read about this in the forums. Has anyone else seen this??
  16. FYI I have an Oregon 400t and with version 3.30 was on a 15km hike this weekend with no lockups. Found 37 caches over the two days with no GPS problems and didn't see any of the padlocks that you are referring to. Drove approx 600km but the Oregon was not on for the full drive.
  17. "The cache owner needs to check on this cache ASAP and either replace it or archive it, after picking up any geo-litter" Does not the phrase, "picking up any geo-litter", suggest that there was something there in the first place and that it may have been damaged or destroyed? So why was this cache archived? I don't post often but I do read the forums and do care.
  18. CoyoteRed And the one you refer to is a 2.0/1.5 and the one placed by Superfly is a 5.0/4.0 so how much more difficult could it be to find?
  19. We have a puzzle cache up here been around since 2005 "Crazy Cat Cache: The Crazy Lair" (GCQZPC) “purr meow”“meow meow meow meow purr”“meow meow meow purr purr” “meow meow meow meow purr”“purr purr meow meow meow”“meow purr meow purr meow purr”“purr purr purr purr meow””meow meow purr purr purr”“meow meow meow purr purr” “meow purr purr”“purr purr meow meow meow”“purr purr purr purr meow” “meow meow meow meow meow”“purr purr purr purr meow”“meow purr meow purr meow purr”“meow purr purr purr purr”“purr purr purr purr purr”“meow meow meow purr purr”
  20. Since you're now using the Keen Targehee and if they fit well I would suggest trying the Keen Oregon. I have a pair and they fit me perfectly. Waterproof and high cut to help protect the ankles and they wear well on the rocks that I hike on, The Bruce Trail in Ontario. BUT, as others have said make sure that the boots you get fit your feet well, probably best to try them on right after a hike when your feet are at their worse.
  21. I don't think that the hobby has caught on with them yet. Tupperware is no problem for them but they seem to have trouble with the ammo cans

    map of Italy

Have you seen the following thread http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=232967 You may want to contact the OP (MikeSSS) to get some more information about his Italy experience.
  23. Here's the scenario that brought about this question. Yesterday I did an earthcache at a bog and one of the requirements was that you needed to measure the distance between two locations, numbered posts, using your GPSr. Well we ( I ) forgot about that requirement during the walk so I had to backtrack to get the measurement and I had the opportunity to measure it twice, once going westwardly and the other going in the opposite direction back to my waiting wife. It was a cool drizzly day and I had 10 sats no waas with a Garmin Oregon 400t, latest upgrade, showing 4m accuracy, walking on a boardwalk over the bog. In the westwardly direction the measurement was 326m and on the return trip the measurement was 308m. I consider this a large difference over such a short distance, remember, I was on a boardwalk in an open area. So I wonder how accurate measurements over large distances would be seeing how some of the trail organizations are now measuring the trail distances using GPSr's.
  24. I have a Nuvi 855 and use the "Advanced Garmin POI Macro" found here http://jjreds01.googlepages.com/download I can load all the geocaches as POI's from GSAK but have a problem with sporadic lockups of the unit when I approach a cache. I gather that this is a Garmin firmware problem. Hope this helps
