  1. The last cache that I referred to leaves no doubt that you need to climb a tree to retrieve the cache. It is in the name and in the description. I know of at least one cacher that was warned a few years ago, by the authorities, that it was illegal to climb trees in the city.
  2. My question is, whose responsibility is it when a cache placement breaks a local by-law? This is a general question but it was triggered by a specific situation. In this case the by-law in question makes it illegal to climb a tree in city parks and there is a fine of $365 for climbing a tree without a permit. See story that was published May 9, 2013 at the following http://www.thestar.com/news/crime/2013/05/09/man_claims_assault_by_officer_who_fined_him_365_for_climbing_tree_without_permit.html Man claims assault by officer who fined him $365 for climbing tree without permit This is not about whether the officer was overly aggressive though it seems like he was but about breaking the bylaw by placing a cache in a place where one has to break a by-law to place it and also to retrieve it. What brought this to my attention and concern was that there are at least 3 caches in fairly close to home, the last one was just published a few days ago, that require the climbing of a tree in a city park to retrieve the cache. I am not totally against climbing trees to retrieve a cache, I just did one yesterday, although one may argue that if the tree is climbed by many cachers then there is a good chance that the tree will be badly damaged. Is the onus on our community, cachers and reviewers, to police a situation like this or just to let it go by and either get the cache or ignore it? If we know of a cache that contravenes a local by-law should we report it to the reviewer and should a reviewers be told not to publish caches that knowingly contravene local by-laws?
  3. Thanks. I would love to try this as it really is annoying. How do you do this?
  4. Thanks but I don't think that it has anything to do with the proximity settings. I can drive along a road within range of a path that has numerous caches and each one will bing only once even though many are within the set range. Then there are two caches that seem to interfere with each other and causes the NUVI bing back and forth between them. There appears to be something about these caches that does not turn the warning bing off if the other one is within range also.
  5. Thanks for the input. What I am trying to describe is this. I am driving down a road with my NUVI loaded with caches. It bings a warning that there is a cache nearby. Then a few seconds later it bings again indicating another cache. This goes on and on, one cache then the other until I leave the area or pull the SD card from the NUVI If I stop the vehicle the binging will go on forever until I poll the card or turn off the unit.
  6. Hi. I have searched for this problem for some time and have not found a solution. I have a NUVI 255 and I load geocaches on the unit using GSAK and macro and then POI loader. What happens when I drive around the NUVI bings to tell me that there is a cache within my set range. I have it set at 1km. On some occasions there seem to be certain areas where cache notification seems to continue to bing back and forth between two or more caches and this continues until I get out of range of these caches. It is not just because of multiple caches because in some areas I can get numerous bings for but only once for each cache. There seems to be something specific about those caches and the way that they are handled that causes this to occur. Has anyone had this happen to them and if so have you found a solution for it? Thanks for any help or input.
  7. Thanks dfx, didn't realize this and when I checked if shows that the note had been archived. I wonder why he did that!
  8. Would I not get a notification that the note was deleted? And if not, why not?
  9. This morning I received an email notification from through geocaching.com You are receiving this email because you are the owner of this listing. ______ posted a note for _________ (Multi-cache) at 1/8/2012 The note was supposedly posted to notify me of a possible problem on one of my caches and the email contained the body of the note. The problem is that the note does not show up in the log section of the cache when I visited it to disable it after checking and seeing that there was indeed a problem. This would impact others that might try to do this cache as there would not have been a note alerting them to a possible problem. How often does this sort of thing occur on the site?
  10. "If it helps, the coords you have should be less than 3 km / 2 miles from the bogus header coords." Where does it say that this is the case? I often see caches at greater distances than this from the bogus coords and not just old ones This is from one that was published 4 June 2011 "Note: the posted coordinates are bogus, but the final is within 10km"
  11. Easter Sunday April 11,2004 First time trying to find a cache, we picked a dandy. Four adults, a three year old dog and 16 week old puppy on the trip. Needed our Jeep to get to the parking lot and then hiked in. The lake was frozen over in the center but lot of water at the edges in the areas that got a lot of sun or runoff. Quite a difficult hike following the edge of the lake and we overshot the mark a bit and had to backtrack. Wouldn’t want to make the hike in full foliage humidity and bug time. It was a pleasant outing and we were tired by the end of the day. A canoe is definately the way to go. We left a lighter and mosquito coil in the cache which was well hidden. I’ve tried to add a picture of the lake from the parking lot. I hope this works. Thanks for the experience. Cache - "Surviving Cinder Lake" GCG7QR and we still remember it well with fond memories.
  12. So I found a benchmark at N34 27.101, W105 44.858 and it does not show up in the search by coords. It is close to geocache GC2F3Q3 and has the following U S GEOLOGICAL SURVEY BENCHMARK ELEVATION ABOVE SEA LEVEL 7009 FEET 3 RMB 1959 Thanks for any help.
  13. Looks like an awesome location. I also wish I was closer. As for the puzzle. Solved it quickly, it's not that difficult and I'm not the greatest puzzle solver. Not trying to rub it in but... As others have said, all the info you need is there on the page, you just need to find it. I don't think that I could have solved it without that info.
  14. Been to Red Rocks a number of times and intend to visit again this trip. Did Calico Basin, Calico Cave and Avenger's Realm #7 last time plus a few others (Feb 06). There sure are a lot more caches in the area now
  15. We'll be driving through the area on hwy 160. Some stops and attractions are limited as we have a dog. A friend visited Four Corners last summer and said that the monument was off limits during the week due to construction. Is that still the case? Thanks
  16. We are planning a trip to the southwest mid April to mid May. Any advise for hiking with a dog, she's a 75lb 11 month old Chessie, in rattlesnake country would be appreciated. I have outlined our basic trip in another thread which I started today. Thanks
  17. We are leaving Toronto, Canada, next Wednesday 13 April for a road trip to the Southwest USA. Planning to drive Utah 128 to Moab then on to Las Vegas visiting Arches, Bryce Canyon and Zion along the way. A few days in Las Vegas then through Arizona, Petrified Forrest back up through the four corners across southern Colorado to end up in Taos NM where we will be staying for 10 nights. I will have about a week free in Taos to hike and cache with my dog while my wife takes an art workshop. We will then make our way back home stopping in Colorado and then on through Kansas, Missouri etc. Any suggestions on must do caches and other stops along the way and around Taos (within a reasonable distance like 100mi) would be appreciated. Thanks
  18. It had happened to me sporadically before but Saturday was something else Here's my post from the 4.45 Beta thread. "Wow! What a day using my Oregon 450 with this software. Found 16 caches. Unit froze at least 8 times and had to pull the batteries once to restart it. The other times I just shut it off and re started it. Lost satellite 5-6 times on top of the freezing, on a clear cool day with blue sky and hardly any to no tree cover in most instances. I hope they fix the situation before I go out again or I will need to regress to a previous version. "

  20. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but just ran a new query for 500 caches and had the same results. Not on my download list and shows up in the list with a line through it. Edit: I was able to download this query from the attachment on my email.
  21. Same thing here. Ran a pocket query yesterday for 800 caches and email that they are ready for download but they are not in the "Pocket Queries Ready for Download" list. Though I had done something wrong so ran it again this morning with the same results. The pocket query that I usually receive on Saturday morning shows there though. Looked at the list of "Active Pocket Queries" and the ones not showing are present but have a line through them.
  22. My unit worked well after loading the beta also ( got 18/18 caches that day ) until I tried to transfer a cache wirelessly which didn't work. Don't use it that frequently but would like to be able to when the occasion arises.
  23. That's what support at Garmin recommended when I reported the send wirelessly problem
  24. My Oregon 400t takes forever to change screens after pressing the touchscreen in cold weather, I'm talking minutes, but I haven't seen that problem with my 450. As for batteries NiMh, newly charged powerx 2700, 4 green bars, 1 green bar after 5-10 min but kept working fine all day. Haven't tried NiZn or lithium yet. As this one is almost over, maybe next winter.
  25. Has anyone else seen the problem that I described above re share wirelessly since the update? I was going to call Garmin support but wanted to be sure whether it is only me.
