  1. Check out the mapviewer: http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/cityselect.jsp From what I can tell, all the small roads that are in MetroGuide Canada v4 (MGC4) and were missing in City Select v5 (CSv5) is now there. I'm referring to areas previously in the "coverage area" where CSv5 only showed the main roads. In urban areas, I would consider CSv5 superior to MGC4. There are many new sub-divisions that are in CSv5 that's nowhere to be found in MGC4. Now it looks like v6 will filled in the rural areas too. Of course, it still doesn't have all the POI that's in MGC4. Can you guys check the map viewer and comment on the coverage in Canada for City Select v6? Please compare it to Metro Guide if you are familar with the product. For my sample check out N44.03028 W80.05754 (Mono Centre St & 3 Line E). 3rd Line doesn't even show up on City Select 5, but it's now there in v6.
  2. Wow, all of Canada is now covered. I also checked the parts that were previously "coverred" but was missing many of the smaller roads. It now has all the missing small roads, so it's equivalent to Metro Guide Canada v4... well at least for roads. It obviosuly doesn't have all the POI. Big improvement. I think it'll be worth the upgrade.
  3. Yeah, I checked last night and it was still V5. Emailed them to ask when it was going to be updated. Hmm... the site is real slow right now, probably from all the people checking out the new V6.
  4. Anybody know (or educated guess) as to whether there will be a Metro Guide Canada update soon? I currently have City Select v5 and will probably be upgrading to v6 soon. v5 lacks any coverage in rural areas, but I've notice that in many cases the urban coverage is more up to date and accurate than MetroGuide Canada. Most notably new subdivisions in the GTA are included in City Select but totally missing in Metro Guide... even ones that are 5 years old.
  5. I just ordered the update CD. It's not a free upgrade but I got them to give me a discount of the $75 upgrade price because I unlocked v5 recently before the announcement of v6. I hear v6 has more coverage in Canada. Hopefully it covers the rural areas that MetroGuide Canada v4 (MGC4) covers. Currently City Select North America v5's (CSv5) urban coverage in Canada is superior to MGC4. There are many new subdivisions in my town that are mapped in CSv5 but not in MGC4. If they just add the missing rural coverage, I wouldn't even need MGC at all. I can't wait for them to update map viewer info to include CSv6. Hmm.. I wonder when the next MetroGuide Canada is due to be released.
  6. I wished I would've known that the updare was comign this soon. I unlocked my V5 just a month ago.
  7. On a related question, if I used one unlock already can I use the second one for the new version?
  8. Most places will do price-match. I bought mine at Radio World with a price match from GPSCity. Unlike most retailers, they know their products! And the after-sales service is great too. A week after I bought the 60C they had it on sale (cheaper than my price-match). They gave me a store credit for the difference. On expensive electronics I usually prefer to buy locally if possible. That is, unless the price difference is huge. Just consider that, and consider after-sale support in case you get a lemon or have questions about the product. It's always good to see the unit in person and compare with other models. GPSCity and GPSCentral seems to have the best prices in Canada. Even if you don't buy form them you may want to look at their websites for price-match opportunites
  9. I use the Garmin Friction mount and it works great. It works on curved dashes. I got it in the package auto-kit that includes CitySelect and a car adapter. When I first saw it I wasn't sure if it would hold the unit in place if the terrain got a bit rough. To my surprise this thing stays put through the roughest of manouvers on a sports compact with stiff suspension.
  10. Neat, I haven't thought about mounting the disk vertically. I've always thought you're supposed to mount it on flat the dash. I've been using the friction mount and really love it. I have it in my RSX and despite spirited driving my 60C stays put through the roughest terrain and the occausional throws around the corner. I guess in a convertable the wind adds a whole new dimension to the forces acting on displacing the friction mount.
  11. That's true but I still wished there was some way of manually set it and not do an auto-search. Mayeb hide it in an advanced settings menu.
  12. You can set categories for Waypoints now. This could be useful for filtering different waypoints like geocaches that uses a variety of icons. I don't like the new auto-find device. I know it only takes a couple of seconds, but it's annoying. The old version you just set it and forget it. I supposed it'd be more useful for people with multiple devices, but they should just let you pick a default.
  13. Thanks for the direct link. I actually got an email notification from Garmin that there is a new version. When I click on the link (same as the one posted by the thread starter), all I got was firmware upgrades. I couldn't find the MapSource upgrade.
  14. For the battery problem, cut out an index card and fold it in half and put it BETWEEN the two batteries. This solves any loose battery problems. I read this on USENET and tried it. I haven't had any problems since.
  15. Yes, totally agree. That's how Mapopolis works. I wish Garmin would offer a subscription service to their MapSource products. Instead of waiting to save up $160 for the Topo Map, I would buy a $30/year subscription right-away.
  16. Thanks for posting the comparison. It looks exatcly the same except for the shading for greenery. I'll probably pick this up eventually once I save enough for it.
  17. I'd love to have the compass, but since the Garmin implementation requires it to be flat when using it, it's not so useful when you mount upright in a car. It's no big deal because as soon as I start driving/walking I'll know that I'm goign the wrong direction.
  18. Thansk for the tip. Blind Avocado, ok I see what you mean now.
  19. Started out with a Magellan Gold, but didn't like it all that much because of the size and screen as hard to see in the car. I got the Garmin 60C and couldn't be happier.
  20. There is a recent find page. Just press the Find button and "Recent Find" is one of the options. You can add it as a display page. That's what I did and all I have t o do to get to "Recent Find" is press the Page button. Now a feature I'd like to have is the ability to set the distance I skew off-course before it auto-recalculates the route.
  21. That's MetroGuide. I thought you were going to post the Topo maps.
  22. Any updates? BTW, I just found out that MetroGuide Canada v4 does have a lot of Tim Hortons listed. You have to look under Specialty Food Products. I'm not sure how complete it is sicne I don't actually own a copy of MGC4.
  23. You need an unlock certifcate to get the unlock code. The CD is pretty much useless without it. Each certificate is good for 2 GPS devices.
  24. Yes the battery life is amazing. I bought a car adapter with it (actually came in the auto kit) but I've only used it once just to test to see if/how it works. I've been running on 1700mAh battery. I'll probably upgrade to larger (2100mAh+) cells soon but right now there doesn't seem to be a need. I think the main reason why it has such great battery life is because of its screen. I hardly ever have to use the backlight unless I'm in complete darkness. Other GPS/PDA/cellphone screens are horrible in the sun or clouds if you don't turn on the backlight.
