  1. I must agree, we must be careful where we are poking around. I was following the GPSr today on a hunt that lead me down along the Hudson River and all of a sudden I noticed a large posted sign with anothewr sign above it that clearly stated that this area watched, any suspiciuos activity reported to police. I left immediatly.

I was on the wrong side of the river and later found the cache I was seeking.

I must say I have never seen a sign like that one before, but given the tone of it and the heightened awareness of suspicious activities these days, I had no problem leaving faster than I entered.

  2. Had heavy flooding here in Delaware County, NY as well. I have made the rounds locally to check on the caches close to home. So far they all seem to have made it thru. The Schoolhouse was far enough away. Car Wash looks like it was OK from the road (unable to get in to it as yet due to heavy mud ). Covered Bridge Tour was far enough away. If I find any missing or drenched will notify the owners.

The Downsville area was hit pretty heavy. Won't be able to check the one near water there for a while.

  3. I am involved in a lot of genealogy research and use cemeteries extensively for such purposes. I would have no problem with a micro near a cemetery as long as it is nowhere in, on, under or around a gravestone or other marker.

Vandalizm of cemeteries and deteriation of very old cemeteries is becoming a problem in our area and any added problems from folks like ourselves looking for a cache is just not the right thing to do.

Given the problems we are having placing (any) caches in the Catskills is enough. Let's not give the Powers That Be, any more excuses for not letting us place caches.

  4. :anibad: I wish to Thank everyone for your help. I have been in contact with the owner Ttepee and everything is straightened out. Permission was granted for the find and relogged.

Rest assured I will not make this mistake again.

Happy cacheing to all. This thread can be closed.

  5. I found a cache box today that had been vandalized and the log book missing. The contents were soaking wet and some obviously missing. I took it upon myself to remove this box and logged the find. I also have emailed the owner and told him of the actions I took and to let him know I will mail the box and contents to him.

My question now is, should I have not done this and just left it there?

It just seemed the right thing to do and I did it. Oh, yes, when I logged the find tonight, I then saw that this had been archived. I had printed this cache back in June so hadn't checked the recent logs.

What a shame this happened. The cache was in a good hiding spot and the area had some great views. Hope the owner can replace it in a near by spot.

  6. Just wanted to add that the jeep I retrieved today has a number on the white strip on the bottom that does not match the number given on the Travel Bug Sheet. However I had no trouble when logging in, using the tag number.

  7.:o I placed my first geocoin a few weeks ago. I left it as I received it and recently it was picked up by a fellow geocacher who it seems has decided to keep it. He logged the cache find and that he took the coin, yet he didn't log the geocoin, so it still shows as being in the cache I left it in. I emailed the person and thanked them for picking up the coin and moving it on for me. Asked them to remember to log it so it would be removed from the listing as being in the cache I left it in. No answer and still shows as being in the cache. Wish I had drilled a big hole in it. Oh well, maybe the others will do better.

  8. I have a Magellan GPS Blazer 12 I have been using for the past couple months and have had good success with finding caches. However I am only able to set the receiver for LAT/LON using degree/minutes or degree/minutes/seconds or UTM. I have the meter set for degree/minutes but it will not accept the complete numbers given on the cache locations. It will only accept 6 digits for north coordinates and 7 for west coordinates. Would I be better off using the UTM setting? I think because of the limit of numerals accepted I am not getting as close to the caches as I could be. It seems that most are within 100 feet or so when the meter zeros. Any suggestions, besides buying a new GPS? Thanks

  9. :D I am new to geocaching as well and have been lurking for about two weeks. I am very interested in the developments being made with New York DEC to allow caches in the Catskill and Adirondack Parks and other state lands. I am hoping that the State will come around and make the process legal and easy so this great past time can continue without problems. I want to place a cache myself but there is no place I can find that is legal to place it.

I'll keep watching and see what developes. In the meantime I am searching out all the caches I can find before they possibly disappear. :D
