  1. I couldn't get past the search function without having an error returned. So apologies if this has been addressed before. This is one for the traveling cachers out there: Any issues with TSA? I'm heading to CA tomorrow and don't know if I should be (gasp!) checking my Garmin, or if it can go carry on. I'm assuming I can't just clip it on my belt! Thoughts/comments appreciated. tnx! tv
  2. D'oh! Tnx guys. It was just as StarBrand suspected. Now that I think about it, this is the first time I've done a PQ that wasn't for my own immediate area. SB, you've a good eye for buzzwords. You saw 'road trip', and that was all it took!
  3. I've done this several times. But must have toggled something and then forgot about it. Here's the flow: I've just built and downloaded a PQ for use on a road trip this weekend. Extracted the file from the zip Sent file to OR 300 Disconnected the OR, fired it up, and No caches! Hmm... Reconnected OR to PC and took a look in the \Garmin\GPX\ directory and started to notice something odd. The file I transferred shows as a single file and not a list of 194 gpx files. And the kicker is, when I open it.... GSAK loads!!! What is GSAK loading?? It's not even on the OR (duh). My first thought was that it's got something to do with file associations. But this has never happened before and AFAIK, I've not changed a dadgum thing that I'm aware of. Have I unconsciously toggled something somewhere, or am I just plain losing my mind here?? I ran my last PQ maybe 2 months ago at most, and everything worked just peachy. No oddball issues with GSAK trying to infiltrate my GPS. Thoughts/comments would be VERY welcomed. tnx! tv Moderator edit to return G rating
  4. I'll be darned! Been using this unit for almost a year now and never knew of it had that degree of flexibility. Worked just like you outlined. Tnx!!
  5. Sorry, OR 300. I'll see if there's something approaching the procedure you've outlined. tnx !
  6. After using 2.89 since it came out, I recently went to 3.22 (that was a mess! Kept freezing on start up!) and have now dropped down to 3.10. Along with the other changes, I notice the options for the data field display seems to be different as well. Instead of telling me how far from the cache I am, it has decided that I'd rather want to know how fast I'm going. Tnx, Garmin. I've already got a speedometer for that! I've explored the SETTINGS menus, but I've yet to find a way to modify things so that I have that old, familiar, and far more useful information letting me know how far away (from the cache) I am. Anyone else miffed by this? Have you found a fix, or should I just go back to 2.98? Not that that would be a problem, as it was working just fine. BTW, I've noticed that no matter what version I've got loaded, the 'about' (or maybe it's 'info') page still says 2.98. Weird. tnx!

  8. I knew there was a reason I stayed at 2.94 Maybe one day they'll move something out of beta. I'll make another upgradge then
  9. Not sure if this is related in any way. But I've got messages (initiated via the 'send message' link in a member's profile) out to probably a half dozen members and I've yet to see a reply from any of them. Obviously, there are a whole bunch of wild cards one can toss into such a scenario: vacations, folks just plain not replying, you get the idea. Wonder how tough it'd be to implement a way to know if the intended recipient has received such a message.
  10. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=15429 (or any other Car 12V to USB cable) Ha! I really AM learning something new every day... tnx!
  11. Yeah, I did manage to later see the info here on the site, and then at the Oregon Wiki.... tnx!
  12. Holy crap. I'd wondered about this, but had no idea it was actually doable! I've been going to the various logs online and updating them individually. Time to reread my Oregon 300 OM!
  13. Been an enlightening time tonight. Went into the 'about' tab (or is it 'info'?) and found that my '300 -purchased new from REI a little over 24 hours ago- was operating on 2.48! Upgraded to 2.80 as that was the newest thing I could DL with Garmin's Web Updater. Then found the 2.86 thread (OK, I did see the 2.86 listed on the Garmin beta page, but something just seemed to be telling me not to update. The 2.86 thread convinced me). Obviously I've since found the 2.93 thread and made that update. I'll be approaching tomorrow's hunt with a good measure of guarded optimism. It's gotta be better than today was: 3 attempts, 0 finds!
  14. Thanks, Star. That does sound cool. So let me get this straight, the Oregon's onboard software will automatically unzip the thing, huh? Impressive. But indulge me on this a bit: I'd taken a brief look at GSAK and it seems one can have a good bit of fun with all it can do as far as presenting/processing cache data. Suppose I make a copy of the .zip file before dumping it into the '300. Any harm in then plugging that copy into GSAK and playing around with it just for the sake of making use of it's various data presentation abilities? Did that even make sense?
  15. Tnx guys; things are starting to gel. Motorcycle Mama: the unit is the Oregon 300. Told ya it was late when I made my post!
  16. Still very much wet behind the ears here. But also learning more and more each night. But I gotta confess that at 2am after reading only 3 of the 30+ pages in this section, my eyes just couldn't keep a straight line anymore. So apologies if this is covered somewhere. I have the Garmin Communicator app installed on my machine. Is this all I need in order to be able to download GPX files, be they one at a time or zipped into a PQ? Or do I need one of the apps (clayjar, GSAK, etc) listed on the gc web site? tnx! tv
  17. What a timely question! I was just thinking about that very thing earlier this evening. The method(s) involved seem straightforward enough. A related question, if I may: I'll get to that same point someday, I'm sure. But I'm thinking it would be nice to be able to look at a master map somewhere on my desktop/laptop and have my 'career finds' shown geographically. How would I go about adding those about-to-be-deleted finds from my Oregon before it's too late? tnx! tv
  18. They can keep their camera. Give us a screen we can use in the daytime!
  19. Yes. Please do keep us all informed of how it goes with THIS one! I've yet to obtain my first GPSr and I've narrowed it down to either the PN40 (ya know.. in the spirit of 'think outside the box') or the 60CSx, so I'm personally quite interested to see how this shakes out.
  20. Came 'that close' to ordering either the 76CSx or the Oregon 300 tonight. Was leaning toward the 300 as I was under the impression it's EC was of the 3-axis type. Then I dug deeper and discovered that its really only a 2-axis design. A quick Goog of '3-axis electronic compass'>'cache' showed that apparently Magellan and Lowrance are the only ones to include 3-axis ECs in their portable/trail GPSrs. Why is this? Why does Garmin appear to shy away from it? Just my take on it, of course, but it would seem to me that being able to take a reading on the fly without having to hold the darn thing level would be a no-brainer. Am I over-thinking this..? Picking nits..? What am I missing? tnx! tv
