  1. Here is a Contest Update. Says you can sign up next Monday.
  2. Last year I bought a pair of lightweight Columbia fishing pants. They have pockets like cargo pants and legs that unzip so that they can turn into shorts. They are good for keeping the PI off of my legs while not making me warm (assuming that I didn't remove the legs...). Got them on sale for $20. Worth every penny.
  3. I seem to love torturing myself with math based puzzle caches lately so I know that this method works. There are also a couple of other ways that I've used to solve for those points, but I won't muddy the water here. Your GPSr may be able to convert to and from UTM, but if not, use: This Link Best of luck to you!
  4. Geocaching isn't exactly a secret. Nothing that is all over the web is much of a secret... Unless they portray us to be a bunch of body hiding murderers, I don't think there will be a bad effect from the episode.
  5. Search for geocaching and either "micro" or "nano" on eBay.
  6. I've had this happen on some occasions. Sometimes it's weakening batteries, sometimes it's the inability of the unit to "see" the birds on the horizon, and sometimes, I'm convinced that aliens are messing with me (like when the unit said that I was not only 350 miles from my actual location but moving NE at 35 mph as well...) There was a stretch about a month ago when my accuracy ranged from 50-300 ft for over a week - had to send it to Magellan for a repair. Their phone reps didn't seem to know what they were talking about, but they fixed it for free and threw in some extras when they shipped it back.
  7. About a month ago, I began planning to hide a cache that was fun for my 2 y.o. I know what kind of cache he is able to get to, so I just planted one myself. He doesn't care if he goes to the same cache repeatedly - he just likes to run through the woods to find a (as he puts it) "car box." My New Cache
  8. With almost everything in life (but not in things like eating or sleeping) it's good to take a little break or change things up. Fortunately, I have a built in geocaching offseason. Before I ever discovered geocaching, I loved fantasy football and watching the Steelers. We get our most convenient (grandma) babysitting on Sundays, so that's our primary caching day. However, football takes priority from Sep - Dec, giving us a little break. It's nice - before I get sick of geocaching, football starts. Before I get sick of football, it ends and geocaching starts. Changing things up within geocaching is also nice. Before, we were trying to find ALL of the caches close to us. Recently, we've been after more difficult hides. It hurts the numbers, but boosts the fun. (Plus, I hear over and over that the numbers aren't important anyway... )
  9. Yeah! What are kids doing in the park anyway?
  10. The Amazing Race has a loose association with elements of geocaching (they actually had to use a GPSr once - it was in a flat desert - anyone who has gone caching has used a GPSr in a more difficult situation), and it is entertaining at times. Given my wife's addiction to "reality" shows, I'll probably watch the NBC treasure search thing.
  11. I drive a Chevy and was tempted to crush all of the Yellow Jeep TB's into tiny flat pieces... They just offended me so much! Good thing I only found one.
  12. Do you need to pull that out of the ground or just read off the numbers? If you just need to read the numbers, then the part of the waypoint that is useful is above ground. If you need to get into the bottle, that's a different story.
  13. As annoying as it might be to send it back to them, you may need to in order to have them fix the light - I don't think that the software changes the button sequence for the backlight. Give them a call and prepare to sit on hold for about 30-45 minutes...
  14. Your reply is unrelated and utterly ridiculous. Junglehair is just doing her duty by helping caches stick to the guidlines. The guidelines say that the cache can't have a religious theme. They say nothing about religious items being place in the cache. Of course every once in a while you can see a good forum fight about religious items...
  15. I've done one and it was interesting. I just prefer the "regular" caches in general. I'm interested to see what the new game is for virtuals/locationless - coming in May, I hear.
  16. They bought TB's and hid them, and there isn't even anyone at the cache ready to put a gun to your head to make you take it. I'm not going to ask every TB owner what their world view is before I take the bug - I just move them to where they want to go. If you don't like the "mission" of the bug, just don't move it. Pretty simple.
  17. Anyone know if/when it will be on again?
  18. We always appreciate when someone hides a kid friendly cache that is also something more than a guard rail grab. We have a two year old who gets left behind at grandma's often as many hikes are not suitable for him. He isn't too interested in micros - they never hold the Hot Wheels swag that he likes to find...
  19. I'll second that. Note, DNF - they both alert the cache owner to a potential problem. Now I just need to post some notes and DNF's for the caches that I want to get but can't because I'm at work...
  20. I use MapSend and a Sportrak Map. Mostly, I use the software to upload regions to my GPS so I have the detailed maps of my area. I haven't ever used the software to upload waypoints - I use Easy GPS for that. My Sportrak is in my car, and I don't want to go out in the snow to get it right now, but I'll try to upload waypoints from MapSend sometime and see if I have the same problems that you are seeing.
  21. OK, this is my final (I hope) report on my Sportrak that I sent to Thales for repair. They took too long to answer their phone as I was often on hold for over 30 minutes, and the rep did not provide me with any information as to what was going on. However, I received the unit 14 days after sending it. They supposedly fixed some software issue, and after 2 days of use, it is working well. Also, before I sent it I couldn't download waypoints from the GPSr to my computer, and now I can. They included a belt clip, a case for the unit, and a printed instruction book along with a 90 day warrenty for the repair. Overall, I have to say that I'm satisfied with the experience. I'm sorry to hear about your Meriplat, Dirtnapper. It seems as if you had the same problem as me but did not receive the same service. I don't really blame you for switching companies. edit: by the way, they did not charge me for the service
  22. When a new cache comes up in my area, I immediately watch it until it has a FTF. I always hope that the FTF can be me, but most FTF's happen in the mornings while I'm stuck at work... I agree though - it would be nice to be able to see who is watching the caches that you own. I'd be interested to know if there was a way to spy on the people who spy on my cache...
  23. Since I've yet to grab a PDA for paperless caching, I sometimes use the wap site - it provides all of the useful information about a cache very quickly (since it's just text) without all of the pretty pictures. I figure that the scenery around me is good enough to count for graphics...
  24. Hey, the spending 3 days part wasn't my statement - it was a quote from someone else. I didn't spend three days looking for it - I didn't even know about the promotion until after the Pittsburgh cache had a FTF. I made it just in time to dig up the last of the "cheap binoculars" coupons. Of course the coupon didn't say "cheap binoculars coupon" - it said "consolation prize coupon" ...or something to that effect. All I was saying is that it seems that whenever I win something, the something isn't all that good. The stuff I won wasn't any better or worse than what is in every other cache - but every other cache isn't part of a contest either. Anyway, check out the other parts of my posts that say that I LIKE that they have the contest. I can't wait to see what stuff I might get for free this year after I miss the Explorist 500 giveaway!
