  1. Another thing, could it be that you have had another similar email address? There are crawlers that scan web pages and find valid email such as abc@google.com and will spam not only that email, but also abc@yahoo.com, abc@hotmail.com, abc@aol.com, and a whole host of other popular email sites in case you have an account there as well.
  2. Problem with this is that it limits who can log the cache. For example, someone uses a nuvi to cache with won't be able to log, nor someone who caches with Google maps.
  3. I would have to set up 8 PQs to grab all the caches within 1000 miles of where I live. I can get the max 1000 caches at 20 miles from my home, after that, the caches wont appear. If you want to grab all the caches within 100 miles, use a number of date based PQs as described here. http://www.markwell.us/pq.htm#tips Also this PDF file has some good tips about pocket queries and using GSAK. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2015732/PQ%20GSAK%20101.pdf
  4. Could have an option that only those on your friends list can see you, or even opt-in specific cachers, a lot like Foursquare does it.
  5. Both Starbuck's and McDonalds offer free wifi as well as many other places. Even most hotels offer free wifi. When you get to an area you want to geocache in, connect your iPhone via wifi and browse the nearby caches. Save them for offline use.
  6. Are you creating a new PQ or are you resubmitting the first PQ? As I understand it, when you resubmit an older PQ, it can take longer for the servers to generate the PQ as new ones get priority. It's possible you are just seeing old data. Try creating a new one with home coordinates selected and see if you get different results.
  7. You need to refresh the page to see the new logs. On the Android, you need to click the menu icon and then Update. Don't remember exactly how to do it on the iPhone; if I'm not mistaken, if you scroll down on the cache page, there is a link to refresh. this is done this way partly to decrease the number of hits to the website done by all the Live apps being used. Groundspeak doesn't have huge, powerful servers like Apple or Google does. As for the decimal degrees, on my Android, I get the standard format of Degrees, Decimal minutes. Don't know why you have something different.
  8. Onr thing that I need to learn to do is to keep extra Swag and logbooks with me when I cache. Every time I find a cache that just needs a little extra TLC, I feel bad about not being able to do anything. I'm not talking about enabling lazy cachers, but sometimes saving a responsible CO a trip or keeping subsequent finders happy with something other than old beer bottle caps.
  9. I can see that Geocaching.com could do better at educating people about letterboxing. It really would not do much good to post in the forums as the majority of geocachers don't read the forums. I don't think that asking people to search AtlasQuest.com is the solution, since if someone who is responsible does not place a cache in aspot due to a letterbox, it just leaves the spot open for the less responsible person to place one. I'm not saying you shouldn't check, just that it will only do very minimal to solving the problem. The best thing to do is to educate those that search for the caches to recognize when they find a letterbox instead. Then the finder will know not to take the stamp and can inform the CO that a letterbox is nearby. This information can be placed with the "how to geocache" info that people read when first logging into the site, as well as in the weekly newsletters. Of course, noone has mentioned the biggest negative of making more geocachers aware of letterboxing, soon AtlasQuest.com will be filled with clues like "go to the third lamppost east of Walmart..."
  10. Found this web site. http://www.htc.com/www/help/ They may be able to give you more help on using your phone. I know you can download apps with the phone and I know it has a GPSr as people I know have the first HTC to come out.
  11. I have my Google Mail filters set to text me when a Needs maintenance is posted on any of my caches. If a person doesn't post a NM on the cache, I might not know of a problem until the next time I get around to reading my email. There have been a couple of times I have checked on a cache to notice the log book completely full, or some other problem with a cache. Check back logs and find that no one even mentions the problem or they briefly mention it within a long post. I might be tired, or other problems on my mind when I read the post and totally miss any mention of the problem. At least with a NM flag, I can see there is a problem every time I check on my cache page. As for finders using the NM flag, true that often the NM flag is not cleared properly. But at least when I'm looking at a cache with the NM set, I can look at the logs to see if there is still a problem or not. I personally prefer not to look at logs before searching for a cache to prevent spoilers, but will make an exception if I see a NM on it (I will at least look at the NM log to see what the problem is, and read any notes afterward to see if there is any mention of it being fixed).
  12. Tried viewing the map today and none of the caches are appearing. Using Firefox 13.0.1.
  13. You can download a MS Word reader from Microsoft site for free. It lets you read and print Word documents, but wont allow you to edit them. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4
  14. I checked both a bad gpx file and a good gpx file with a hex editor. In a bad gpx file, I have the character 1A. In a good gpx file, it is 3 characters E2 84 A2. That is why my program replaces the 1 character with 3. It works fine for me. The TM symbol shows up in Notepad with the Times New Roman font, and shows correctly on the GPSr. I am using the PN-60. Maybe the PN-40 is incapable of showing the TM symbol? If you click on "GPX File" from the cache page, then save the file to the PN-40, does the log show TM correctly then? At the very least a "?" is better than disappearing caches. Edit: After researching a bit, I find that E2 84 A2 is UTF-8 encoding for the TM symbol. Since the gpx file is encoded in UTF-8, that is why that sequence appears. If you don't see the TM in notepad, then you must be using an older version which doesn't support UTF-8.
  15. Of course, anybody on geocaching.com is free to hide their own non-PMO caches as long as it doesn't violate geocaching nor landowner guidelines.
  16. Never found a cache on a dumpster, but I did once find a piece of velcro that once held a cache on a dumpster, and the cache was by ashnikes, and the dumpster is probably where he got his cache containers from. The cache is this one http://coord.info/GC29RCB (hope I don't get banned for posting that link ). Funny thing is, the person I was caching with that day actually went back when the cache was replaced.
  17. Tried the above with my Delorme PN-60. Have the same bug with it. Tried creating a PQ with the problem cache and transferred the PQ using both Cache Register, and with Drag-n-Drop, and the file behaved perfectly. Even edited the file to force a save/reload of the gpx file. It is definitely a bug with the plugin itself and not with the GPSr. Jholly would not have a problem since he is using the Garmin plugin and not the Delorme. Probably the best way to get this problem solved would be in the Delorme forums. Edit: The Delorme forums are aware of the problem. Here is a description of the problem: http://forum.delorme.com/viewtopic.php?p=200195#p200195 Edit2: I have created a nice workaround program for Windows here http://www.filedropper.com/delormepluginfix Just unarchive the file to its own directory. No need to install anything. On your Delorme, choose Settings, Connect to Computer, When Connected, Open Internal Drive (or Open SD Card if you store your caches on SD). Then run the program DelormePluginFix.exe. a requester opens asking for the source file, just navigate to the Delorme folder (usually EM_USERMAPS), then waypoints, and finally the offending gpx file. Next requester asks where you want to save. You can save to the same folder, but use a different filename, such as GPXFileFixed.gpx. The program will then process the file and correct the problem. Now eject the device and click on Use GPS. Go to Geocaches and open the fixed file.
  18. Posting a Needs maintenance means that the cache needs maintenance, and nothing more. Don't know why anyone would take it personally. I prefer that a NM be posted if there's a problem with my cache. I tend to forget when someone tells me I have a wet log or a full log. With a NM attribute, I will be reminded every time I view my cache page. Also, if the log is full, or wet, or something damaged, wouldn't you want to give some indication for the next cacher, or would you rather that they find the cache in disrepair? Not everyone reads past logs, but a NM will stick out like a sore thumb.
  19. To use the tip analogy, I see it more like the place that leaves a jar on the counter rather than the person that asks for tips. It is easy to ignore if you don't wish to leave one, but serves as a reminder for those who may decide to leave one.
  20. On the main screen at the top right, where it says Location, click on it and change it to say Trackables. Enter the tracking code into the search field, then click the magnifying glass next to it. From there, you can grab, discover, write note,etc...
  21. Around here, we call that Jetskiing. Named for a cacher called Jetskier who would challenge himself by trying to find the final of puzzle caches and multi-caches without actually doing the puzzle, or visiting the stages of the multi. Many around here get upset with this method of finding caches as they are being found in a manner not intended by the CO. My opinion is that if he enjoys doing it that way, then I'm ok with that. It doesn't affect the way I play the game. There are some around here that actually uses that as a challenge when placing caches. Try to make the final place so obscure that you will never find it without solving the puzzle, unless you stumble on it completely by accident.

How long ago did you email Clyde? He doesn't have a staff to answer his email for him so don't be surprised if it takes a day or two to get back to you.
  23. If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to copy and paste the link to the PQ here. It would be helpful to see what settings you have done for both the original, and the new PQ, instead of just guessing.
  24. Try turning off "Use Wireless Networks" under Location and Security settings. It helped with a problem I had running cartridges. Also on the main page of the Wheryougo app, Click on "GPS" icon and then make sure the GPS button is switched on
  25. You will get some caches the same if areas overlap. If that isn't the problem, then you probably have some setting done incorrectly. Do you have a state selected in the "Within" section? If you are trying to do a PQ by coordinates, then the "Within" section should be "Non Selected". Also, are you clicking "Submit Information" at the bottom whenever you make changes? If you just edit the page and then click on Preview at the top without resubmitting the form, you will get the old cache list and not a new one.
