  1. Logs are not showing on cache pages; there's nothing between the grey box that tells how many logged visits there are and the "Current time:" line. I can still see the logs if I click on "View Logbook", but only 10 at a time instead of all on one page.

This happens in both Safari 4.1.3 and Firefox 3.6.28 on an iMac running Mac OS X version 10.4.11.

Are you also using a Greasemonkey script?

  2. Hey, I have recently started geocaching and discovered my first travel bug. It was a Canadian flag type, and I was really tempted to take it, but decided not to since I wouldn't be traveling any time soon.

After searching the name of the trackable online, I discovered the option to mark it as "discovered", but I didn't have the code with me so I couldn't do this.

Was this the right thing to do, or should I have taken it to a geocache a mile away? (I am under 16 and can't drive)

You could do either. If you leave the TB in the cache, then you could log a "discover". If you decide to pick it up then you do a retrieve, and even if you only move it to the next cache, do a drop, that is just fine too.

  3. I started geocaching (12/21/13) last year as way to get more exercise and see the sights more closely. Most of the 400+ caches I've found have been by myself, with the majority in the back-country. Being 68 years old I do get a bit concerned about my safety when I go over 3 star terrain and being in Phoenix when I see no one else on the trails at times. I rely on my cell phone to bail my butt out should I get injured. How many others cache solo? Should I get a partner?

I more enjoy caching with a partner, however one of my partners is a pilot so she isn't always available. My other partners still work 9-5 Mon-Fri. this means I either don't go or I stick with easier ones closer to town where my phone will work.

My pilot partner introduced me to DeLorme Inreach

Now no matter where I go my daughter has an idea of where to find me. It has the capability to send pre-made messages as well as having the capability to send an SOS message.

I find the price of the unit and the fee to be a well worth cost for peace of mind.

Go to events, meet others, make friends, and ask to tag along when they go caching or ask one to go with you.

  4. Hi All,

I am a nature photographer who enjoys traveling the back-roads to find good locations for my images. I have a PU with slide-in camper that allows me to get to out-of-the-way spots with some comfort (the old back can't handle the Thermorest anymore, LOL). I am trying to find an in-dash GPS (hopefully with stereo) that will allow me to tag locations for future visits for shooting. I also enjoy night photos so having an accurate location is helpful after dark.

I would like the ability to tag locations as I drive, tag locations off the road (usually no more than a mile off using Android) and be able to take this info back to the in-dash unit, add text to tag to help describe highlights, and be able to download all of this information onto my desktop to help plan future trips which I can then load back into the in-dash unit.

    Does such an animal exist?

BTW, I travel in US and Canada.

Many thanks for your time and response.

    Rick

    Bolding mine

You won't find an indash nav sytem that will allow you to make changes while the vehicle is in motion. You're supposed to be driving not texting or playing with your GPS.

That is one of the complaints a friend has with the nav/stereo system in her Xterra. As the navigator, I can't make changes to it while we're in motion. We have to come to a complete stop and then reprogram it. I have more success using my Nuvi.

  5. I don't think a cacher is being a cache cop by questioning how a guideline was 'bent' to a situation until that cacher makes a habit of looking for and making a big deal of every variance. Or gets on a crusade with her own agenda, gleefully reporting every guideline variance (or outright violation), seeing it as their duty to 'clean up' or 'save' the game. The worst of those seem to want everyone to cache by their personal interpretation of the guidelines. Reviewers are given discretion for a reason. One exercise of that discretion may be to turn a bind eye to an egregious guideline violation.

Only extremists see the world in black or white... for most of us for most issues the answer is somewhere in the gray area.

We have a cacher in our area that does this, reporting every little variation and asking for archival of "offending" caches. They've already ruined at least two good TB hotels.

  6. Is money a factor? If you don't mind shelling out the cash, the Garmin Montera (sp) runes Android, so you actually could run the app.

Otherwise, for something different, the Magellan Explorest line may be a fit as it would be quite a bit different than the garmin.

thank you for the info.. $$ is somewhat of an issue as I am wanting one for myself as well as for my father.. what do you know about the Garmin Etrex Legend HCX?

For you, I would suggest the Etrex 20. Much better than the Etrex 10. For your father... The Legend HCX or the Venture HC would be a good choice as both are fairly simple to use. I have used both and prefer the Venture HC.

  7. Hi,

Sorry if this is a silly question but how does a Geocacher get to find out about Souvenirs that become available ? Are they announced on the website ?

The only reason I ask is that on 16th August I got the International Geocaching Day 2014 Souvenir, I was not expecting it. I could have easily missed it but it just so happened I found a cache on that day.

Is there any way of being told or finding out in advance when these souvenirs become available ? Am I missing something simple ?

First off.... No question is too silly.

As for the souvenir you got, the 3rd Saturday of August is International Geocaching Day so for the past few years a souvenir has been given out.

Naturally the 7 Souvenirs of August in on the homepage of GS when you go to the website. They were announced in the newsletter as well and that is how most are made known.

  8. I would like to see a feature where you could embed the trackable map in a website. I asked support and they currently don't have any way to do this right now. I would love to know what you guys think.

Using Firefox, my regular browser, I looked at one of my trackables and clicked "View Map"

Once the map came up I right clicked on it and chose the option to View Page Info

That brought up a box with information about the page and the first entry was the address of the map.

I copied and pasted that address into another browser window and I got not only the map but the whole listing for the trackable.

If you want all of that info displayed somewhere else, that's how you can do it but that will overload the other location with info.

  9. My caching partner and I unofficially adopted an old cache in our area. The CO hadn't been active for over 8 years and it was just something we decided to do because the cache was one of the oldest in the state. One of the problems we had was that we couldn't clear the NM flag but that really didn't bother us too much.

After replacing the container three times, and the last container had been attached to a tree with a cable, we decided no more. It was time to let it go so we contacted our reviewer and explained the situation to them. 60 days later it was archived.

For the caching community it was the loss of an old cache, but it opened up a spot for a new cache. For the cache thief, and yes it was another cacher that was stealing the containers, it was the loss of a cache for them to steal. The cache had run its course and now is part of geocaching history and tall tales at events.

Every cache has a life span and they need to die off so that others can be placed.

  10. Last time he was online was august 4. And his last cache found was in May. Maybe he's quitting.

I doubt he is quitting. I have yet to have an EC owner acknowledge my answers.

When I do an EC, I log it, email the answers and move on. There is nothing saying that an EC owner has to reply to you. Same with a virtual.

  11. Here's my question: Why do geocachers "fill in gaps" by placing caches every couple hundred feet from each other? (Namely on hiking trails).

Ever go hiking with kids? For many after walking for 30 minutes the questions start coming... "How much farther?", "Are we there yet?", "I'm tired."

Those caches keep the little ones motivated. It gives them something to find along the way, and it gives us older folks a break for a few minutes. When I do a trail like that, especially if it is an out and back, I'll do every other cache on the way out and then the skipped ones on the way back.

  12. Which is better to use a garmin etrex 10 or my galaxy note 2 for geocaching and why the one over the other? Thanks in advance!

    Scenario:

You're caching with both your phone and your GPS. You drop the GPS in a stream, quickly grabbing it back out. Can you still make a phone call??

Try the above scenario only drop your phone. The answer to the question changes.

Which is less expensive to replace?

  13. What is your cache chasing mode of transportation??

For me, it is my 2009 Ford Escape.

Had an '03 Escape, like you said easy on gas and a decent ride. The only problem was it wasn't true 4wd and that is what I needed.

Now I have an '11 Xterra (TB3ZNHC)... yep gets me to those caches that the Escape just looked at.

  14. My first question is why was the old container still out there in the first place. Why didn't you go get it when you archived it?

This was my thought as well.

If it were me, I'd thank the other person for picking up my trash and that they could keep the container for their use.

  15. Okay, I'm new to geocaching and don't read these forums very often at all, so if I'm totally off base please let me know but be kind. {snip}

End of rant. Again, if I'm totally wrong for feeling this way, please let me know.

Yes you are way off base and yes you are totally wrong for feeling this way.

Releasing a TB with a goal and expecting it to go in a straight line is unrealistic. Once out of your hands you have no control of its movement.

Think of TB movement like a fly in a house. The object is to get out of the house but if you watch the fly it goes all over the place before finding the open window.

  16. If I co-own a geocache (as the secondary owner), am I doomed to the mark of an un-found cache in a specific area? I have not received a star on the cache (marking it as mine) and I know it's bad form to find your own cache. That leaves me with the curse of an unmarked cache. Is there a way around this or is this to discourage co-ownership?

What I did for the few caches I either helped hide or am listed as a co-owner is, after a suitable length of time I logged it as a found with the explanation that I was with the owner when they hid it and I'm getting it off my unfound list.

  17. E-mailing the owner of the travelbug and the owner of the cache may get the bug marked as missing as long as one of them is still active and or cares.

And it may get you the reputation of being a busy-body too.

The TBs may not be in the cache for several reasons such as:

I was there just before you and took it. It has gone missing. It was accidentally logged into the wrong cache.

Just note in your log that you didn't see it and don't worry about it.
