  1. You could do either. If you leave the TB in the cache, then you could log a "discover". If you decide to pick it up then you do a retrieve, and even if you only move it to the next cache, do a drop, that is just fine too.
  2. I more enjoy caching with a partner, however one of my partners is a pilot so she isn't always available. My other partners still work 9-5 Mon-Fri. this means I either don't go or I stick with easier ones closer to town where my phone will work. My pilot partner introduced me to DeLorme Inreach Now no matter where I go my daughter has an idea of where to find me. It has the capability to send pre-made messages as well as having the capability to send an SOS message. I find the price of the unit and the fee to be a well worth cost for peace of mind. Go to events, meet others, make friends, and ask to tag along when they go caching or ask one to go with you.
  3. Bolding mine You won't find an indash nav sytem that will allow you to make changes while the vehicle is in motion. You're supposed to be driving not texting or playing with your GPS. That is one of the complaints a friend has with the nav/stereo system in her Xterra. As the navigator, I can't make changes to it while we're in motion. We have to come to a complete stop and then reprogram it. I have more success using my Nuvi.
  4. There probably is a macro, but the search function of GSAK will also do it.
  5. We have a cacher in our area that does this, reporting every little variation and asking for archival of "offending" caches. They've already ruined at least two good TB hotels.
  6. thank you for the info.. $$ is somewhat of an issue as I am wanting one for myself as well as for my father.. what do you know about the Garmin Etrex Legend HCX? For you, I would suggest the Etrex 20. Much better than the Etrex 10. For your father... The Legend HCX or the Venture HC would be a good choice as both are fairly simple to use. I have used both and prefer the Venture HC.
  7. First off.... No question is too silly. As for the souvenir you got, the 3rd Saturday of August is International Geocaching Day so for the past few years a souvenir has been given out. Naturally the 7 Souvenirs of August in on the homepage of GS when you go to the website. They were announced in the newsletter as well and that is how most are made known.
  8. Using Firefox, my regular browser, I looked at one of my trackables and clicked "View Map" Once the map came up I right clicked on it and chose the option to View Page Info That brought up a box with information about the page and the first entry was the address of the map. I copied and pasted that address into another browser window and I got not only the map but the whole listing for the trackable. If you want all of that info displayed somewhere else, that's how you can do it but that will overload the other location with info.
  9. Doesn't it stand for Large Egregious Gigantic Object? So I would say yes.
  10. Not necessarily true. Older caches had solutions that were miles away from their posted start location. However, if a cache is fairly new you can figure that the final is within 2 miles.
  11. 3.2.10 is the latest version. Run the version check from the macro list page.
  12. My caching partner and I unofficially adopted an old cache in our area. The CO hadn't been active for over 8 years and it was just something we decided to do because the cache was one of the oldest in the state. One of the problems we had was that we couldn't clear the NM flag but that really didn't bother us too much. After replacing the container three times, and the last container had been attached to a tree with a cable, we decided no more. It was time to let it go so we contacted our reviewer and explained the situation to them. 60 days later it was archived. For the caching community it was the loss of an old cache, but it opened up a spot for a new cache. For the cache thief, and yes it was another cacher that was stealing the containers, it was the loss of a cache for them to steal. The cache had run its course and now is part of geocaching history and tall tales at events. Every cache has a life span and they need to die off so that others can be placed.
  13. I doubt he is quitting. I have yet to have an EC owner acknowledge my answers. When I do an EC, I log it, email the answers and move on. There is nothing saying that an EC owner has to reply to you. Same with a virtual.
  14. Ever go hiking with kids? For many after walking for 30 minutes the questions start coming... "How much farther?", "Are we there yet?", "I'm tired." Those caches keep the little ones motivated. It gives them something to find along the way, and it gives us older folks a break for a few minutes. When I do a trail like that, especially if it is an out and back, I'll do every other cache on the way out and then the skipped ones on the way back.
  15. Nobody is saying you can't cache with a phone. They are pointing out some obvious differences.
  16. Scenario: You're caching with both your phone and your GPS. You drop the GPS in a stream, quickly grabbing it back out. Can you still make a phone call?? Try the above scenario only drop your phone. The answer to the question changes. Which is less expensive to replace?
  17. Had an '03 Escape, like you said easy on gas and a decent ride. The only problem was it wasn't true 4wd and that is what I needed. Now I have an '11 Xterra (TB3ZNHC)... yep gets me to those caches that the Escape just looked at.
  18. This was my thought as well. If it were me, I'd thank the other person for picking up my trash and that they could keep the container for their use.
  19. Yes you are way off base and yes you are totally wrong for feeling this way. Releasing a TB with a goal and expecting it to go in a straight line is unrealistic. Once out of your hands you have no control of its movement. Think of TB movement like a fly in a house. The object is to get out of the house but if you watch the fly it goes all over the place before finding the open window.
  20. What I did for the few caches I either helped hide or am listed as a co-owner is, after a suitable length of time I logged it as a found with the explanation that I was with the owner when they hid it and I'm getting it off my unfound list.
  21. And it may get you the reputation of being a busy-body too. The TBs may not be in the cache for several reasons such as: I was there just before you and took it. It has gone missing. It was accidentally logged into the wrong cache. Just note in your log that you didn't see it and don't worry about it.
  22. According to the guidelines is the CO but if the CO is absent from the game? Everybody gives opinions about my actions or my opinions but I put up a fairly simple question... And up until now got no answer. No one knows? So, if GS is a listing service and the cache (property of the CO) is not being maintained by the CO (and please, let´s not debate what is considered maintenance because guidelines are very clear on this subject) shouldn´t it be removed from the listing service or, at least, controlled by GS or the local reviewers by removing bogus logs from the listing service? This is my question. How do you know the CO isn't still maintaining the cache? Just because they don't log in, or participate online, doesn't mean that they are not actively participating. Maybe they have made arrangements with someone to do routine maintenance yet that person can't do anything to the listing.
