  1.

One idea I had would be to hide a crate in a forest somewhere that is full of small containers and has a log book. When someone finds it they can sign the log, but are not to put tradeable items (trackables are the exception) into the crate, instead they have to take one of the small containers and place it within say...10 or 20 paces of the crate. If they find any containers around, they can only take the item in there if they return the container back to the crate (but could then place their own item and hide it somewhere they want).

Would this be conflicting with the cache density rule? Theoretically the mini caches aren't really caches at all, just extensions of the main one (no log books in them, just an item). Lets hear your thoughts :)

So you want people to litter?

Not a good idea in my mind.

  2. Let's say a Travel Bug decal gets damaged, peels off, or gets stolen. You don't want to buy another code because you've got all those precious Geo-miles on the original code. Is there any way to get a replacement with the same tracking code?

I've tried contacting a couple online shops, including shop.Geoching.com, but none of them print the decals. I've also thought of buying some type of sticker paper and printing one out, but I'm not sure how well normal stickers handle being outdoors for years. Maybe I could go to a sign maker and get them to make a professional decal?

Has anyone tried to do this before? What type of medium are the official decals printed on?

There is an online company that will make you a TB decal for your vehicle for about $10. You can supply the TB number.

    PM sent

  3. Do TB's have to be attached to something? can they just be sent out on their own?

I would love to find a TB and help it on its journey but I have not as yet found any.

No they do not need to be attached to something.

In my case, the attached item has a small story about it and the tag merely allows me to see where the item is.

  4. Of those three -- none of them.

If I had to choose from those three choices... I would dig just a wee bit deeper into my pocket and get the eTrex 20.

Edit to add: end-of-year sales can very well produce a similar price for a better unit. :)

I have an eTrex 20 and love it. I bought a refurbished unit for my girlfriend from Cabelas, so deals are out there.

  5. I'm sure this is a dumb question, esp. to you experienced cachers...but I've heard talk about "maps" since I've started, have listened to many geocaching podcasts where the subject is mentioned, and I still do not have a clear understanding as to how/why I need a map.

    {snip}

Can you guys explain in layman's terms why maps are beneficial, and are they really necessary?

Maps let you see that the cache is on the other side of the creek and that there is a bridge about .2 miles away ON THE PATH. Other wise you would end up heading straight for the cache and wondering how to cross the 100 ft chasm the creek is in.

Maps also let you see that there is really a street nearby the cache that puts you much closer to the cache than the .5 mile walk from where you are.

  6. I wonder if there is an easy way to move and/or copy one or several caches from one list to another? I have a list called "Mysts to solve" and another called "Solved mysts" and I would like to have an easy way to mark one or several caches on one list and then just click on "Move selected caches" or "Copy selected caches" and the choose another list to where the caches should be moved/copied. Today I have to open the cache, choose bookmark and then choose to which list. Then I have to open the initial list and delete the cache (for moving).

This is a feature that I would like to have on the site (if there isn't an easy way today that I'm not aware of).

As far as I know.... there isn't a way to do this on the website. It is possible to do offline using GSAK program, both in GSAK and updating bookmark lists on the website.

  7. I've recently started caching, bought an Oregon 450. I set up a PQ and loaded it to the GPS, but I find there's massive duplication of entries.

Is there aqny way I can weed out the duplicates?

Is there any chance that the GPS was preloaded with caches or loaded caches into it manually? A PQ shouldn't give duplicate entries.

  8. I wish I had that kind of time. I am contractor for the southern tier of NY and northern tier PA. My job takes me all over. This is my only advantage I have. So if I'm lucky maybe 6- 10 a week. My wife has me feeling like I'm an addict. Most of you folks must be retired or something, I just don't see how it's posable to get that many in one day.

Being able to travel all over your area gives you the flexibility to find caches in your spare time there, such as an airline pilot during a layover. The most I've found in 1 day is 104, and that was in an 9 hour period. In certain areas it is possible to get several hundred in a day, but it is a lot of work.

As for "being addicted".... well some of us are retired, or have jobs where we can spend time caching. I tend to plan out road trips and vacation trips around caching. We've seen some pretty amazing things, gone to some very scenic spots, and had a good time while traveling.

The reward is seeing places, finding that elusive container, and having a good time fulfilling various challenges.

  9. When working on Geo-Art, I put the corrected coordinates on the cache page and save to a bookmark. If I use this bookmark to create a pq to put into GSAK, I get the corrected coordinates. However, if I try to share this bookmark with someone and they use it to create a pq for GSAK, they do not get the corrected ones, only the original ones. Is there any way around this?

Not within the "terms of use".

  10. I received an email to update my credit card for premium membership. The only way I could get into my payment info was to apply for a new premium membership! Now I have been on auto renewal for years so will I get double billed???

    Thanks for any info!

You will have to contact Groundspeak about this, not us in the forums. :)

  11. Having owned both units, I recommend the Etrex. Here is just a list of reasons I can think of off the top of my head.

    * Etrex is being maintained with regular updates, GC has been abandoned development wise by Magellan. You will never see another firmware upgrade for the GC

    * Etrex has GLONASS, GC doesn't

    * Etrex will auto route, GC doesn't

    * Far more free map options for the Etrex vs the GC

    * Etrex has better battery life.

    * Etrex looks better in the bright sun, GC is awful in sunlight

    * Menus are much more clunnkier in the GC then the Etrex. You will be pressing much more buttons.

    * Etrex will show you the nearest cache if you want at all times. you have to click around on the GC to show the nearest cache, then repeat if you keep driving

    * There's many reasons why Garmin outsells Magellan 50 to 1.

    * Etrex responds quicker with it's menus

And that's just a few... Give me a few more minutes, I can list another ten.

I donated my GC to our local geocaching group too use as a backup for anyone attending our meetings.

Wow! They are excellent reasons. Now I have to do some more thinking to do! Regular updates would be nice. I was wondering why I didn't see any Magellan GPS units in the geocache store. Thanks for the reasons.

PS... the GC has been abandoned by the manufacturer, so no more updates for it at all.

  12. I use Inreach... and chose the plan that allows me to suspend my subscription when I don't go out by myself as much, like during winter. I researched SPOT and other "tracking" devices and decided that for my use the Inreach was the best way to go.

With other devices you may not be able to tell your rescuers what the situation is, so they may not bring the right equipment to help you. The joke my daughter and I have is "Help! Got two flat tires and out of beer. BRING BEER!!"

A friend took his Inreach to the top of Everest.... Yeah, way cool to be able to track him.

  13. Well here in Colorado it is fairly easy to tell what is public land and what is not, No Trespassing signs are noticeable and land parcels tend to be huge and well marked. Plus BLM doesn't allow caches, neither does the tribe, and the National Forest doesn't allow new ones, it concentrates the caching area a bit.

In Washington it was a bit more difficult, and the town I was living in has a bunch of public trails that are on road easements that well don't look anything like future roads. I usually went with a lack of No Trespassing signs and distance from homes to decide if the cache I was approaching was on public accessible land, also Washington has beaches so walking below the low tide line is legal anywhere but getting to the beach is another matter.

Panther... Basically it is the San Juan NFS that doesn't allow caches. I wasn't aware that BLM there doesn't. Indian Nation excepted as they don't allow any at all. On this side of the Great Divide, the NFS allows caches as does BLM. :)

  14. Yup! That's all it's about. Getting a find on a cache that could not be found. Toss a throwdown, claim a find on it! Why log a DNF, when you can toss a throwdown, and claim you found the throwdown???

Wait.... there is a proper protocol to a throwdown. You have to stand with your back to GZ and toss the throwdown over your shoulder. Then you count to 10, turn around and hunt for the throwdown. That way you can actually claim that you found it. :)

  15. We tried the, "contact the last, if no answer by..." and it didn't pan out.

Spending our time on others (most who never responded) just wasn't sensible.

Like Walts Hunting, we grab, dip and done.

Am I to assume that if you were to find a cache on the day I found that cache and had dropped off a TB but not logged either the cache or TB drop that you would Grab the TB from me?

I'll tell you right now that I would grab it back and drop it into the cache.

I don't use a smartphone to cache, so I don't immediately log caches when I find them. I will log them within 24 hours, usually less, when I've returned home and can use my computer.

  16. I'm working on a new Wherigo with 6 zones that will take you to the 5 Carnegie libraries in my county and then to the final in one of the newer libraries. Each of the zones is on the sidewalk, the question to answer can be seen from the zone, and the final is wheelchair accessible too. Here's the kicker. It will require 41 miles of driving when all completed. I was initially thinking a 2.5/2 or something in that range (for both D and T) but wondering what others might think. My local group has chimed in and there's no consensus there so thought I'd go to a larger forum. Could I get away with setting the terrain at 1 even though the distance covered is significant or should I stick with my original idea in the 2-2.5 range? If I do set T at 1, do I compensate for the distance by raising the D? Thoughts?

IMHO... rate it appropriately as to overall D and overall T. You might mention that this will involve some driving, yet the time required to do the Wherigo should reflect that it won't be a quick C&D.

  17. But I asked the Administrator (by the way, he's actually like head of finance and carrying out orders given by the Town Board, not like a Mayor -that's the Village President.) anywho, I asked him if it'id be OK to put one in that antique WW I (I think) plane actually. I wasn't sure who technically owns that, if it's the Town itself or the Legion local post or who. There's a sign that's been there for about 20 years saying; "This plane is on loan from the air force museum". But I figured for-go that problem searching that out and ask him if a spot I had already found was OK.

    Bolding mine

You want to know who owns the plane?? The Air Force Museum does. As you said, it is ON LOAN.
