  1. I've owned my trusty eTrex H now for almost 2 years and always found it very useful even under the most dense of foliage, but I'k having a little issue with it right now, probably due to overuse!! The black rubber edging that has all the buttons and runs right around the unit (sorry for being dense, its difficult to describe), has started to come away making button pressing very hit and miss. I've noticed that the glue has dried out and is probably not helping matters. Tried phonong Garmin today but no reply after hanging on ages. Is there a home made solution? Can I remove the band completely, clean it off and re glue it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bananaskin
  2. Thanks for all the advice. I did log an NM as suggested. No response yet from CO. Bunch of hives in (fairly) open woodland.
  3. I visited a cache site this morning, the last of a short series fairly local to me. Found it OK but it was sited within a few feet of some beehives which were very active such that I had to leg it. Even then I got stung! To be fair, the cache owners hint included a reference to beehives and although it was published 3 weeks ago, a find about 2 weeks ago suggested that the bees were not active at that time. They certaianly are now! What would be the correct thing to do now? I am aware that for some people, bee stings can be quite dangerous and the first thing I did (apart from chucking the cache into the hedge from some distance away) was to email the cache owner suggesting that the cache be relocated. No response so far. I have also made a note as part of my find log that fellow cachers be aware of a bee presence. What more can one do? You hear and see caches which are almost impossible to retrieve due to location (I have even paddled across a small river to retrieve a cache)but do you think these are in the same league as caches that may (in some people) be very risky indeed. Fellow cachers thoughts very welcome as I don't know if I've done the right thing. Thanks Bananaskin
  4. ??? I was sure you were able to change log types in the past - so had to go and try it out..... Managed to change between "Found it" and "Write Note" and back again with no problem on logs dating back to 2007 However.....on a slightly different topic....I was unable to write a log of any kind using Chrome, and had to revert to IE9 to get the log page to format properly. Is this a known issue since the site revamp? Thanks for all the replies....just spent more than an hour correcting all my find dates...won't do that again in a hurry!!
  5. We have just returned from a geocaching holiday to Wiltshire and used public library computer terminals to log our finds. Somehow, we have managed to log around 35 caches with find dates of 5th/6th March and April instead of similar dates in May. I find this very embarrassing and wonder if there is a way of correcting this error?
  6. Don't wish to upgrade unless essential. Will investigate GSAK possibilities... Thanks Bananaskin
  7. I don't wish to start a new thread regarding GPS types but an answer to the following question(s) would be very welcome. I have an eTrex 'H' which has served me well over the last 2 years. It holds on to a signal under the deepest forest cover but...I cannot download caches (using the GC code) as the 'H' will only accept 6 alphanumerics and typically GC codes run to 7 alphanumerics. This means if I want to hunt down a cache series planted by a single geocacher, then I have to enter the coords manually which is time consuming and annoying. I guess the question is what is the next step up from the 'H'?
  8. Oops! maybe I've spoken too soon....I have the icons for the selected caches now displayed on MM. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but none show any ID? Apart from giving lat/lon coords and elevation, there is no further info like cache GC number. I tried double clicking on icons to see if another window would open, but no. What am I not doing? Regards BS
  9. Many thanks Chris (Gracukus) and all other contributors. GSAK is up and running on MM!! All set for a weekend in Norfolk (17 caches to discover) when the ground dries a bit. Again, my grateful thanks to all. Regards BS
  10. Gritted my teeth with GSAK and today got as far as getting a single cache on the GSAK 'grid'. Quite content with progress so far......however, I'm now stuck at trying to export from GSAK to MM (or is that importing to MM from GSAK!!). GSAK help is not very helpful on this topic and if I can just get one cache across to MM I'll be very happy. Best Regards to to all present and future contributors. PS: Bought Region 1 MM today (Southern England) This is in preparation for a short holiday to Wiltshire (Geocaching of course!) early May.
  11. Thanks for the responses guys....as a start, I've downloaded GSAK and will try and navigate through it over the next days. At first glance, it looks awfullly daunting!! Graculus...thanks for the link..what is your opinion on the (fairly) new? Memory Map GPS? Does this unit have UK OS Landranger maps installed as standard? I fear that going for a new GPS may not allow me to plan a route avoiding doubling back? Thanks again BS
  12. We have enjoyed geocaching all over the UK for 2 years now and use a Garmin eTrex 'H',which I'm very satisfied with except that, in some instances, it won't accept the full GC alpha numeric, meaning a laborious entry by hand of Lat/Lon coords. In conjunction with the Garmin, I use Memory Map (GB Central) where I add the lat/lon coords which brings up a flag where the cache is located. This enables me to plan a suitable walking route so I can cover as many caches as possible without doubling back on myself. I have been meaning to install GSAK, but the techno babble puts me off, and I'm not sure if there is much difference in what I'm doing anyway. A new all singing/all dancing GPS has been considered until I take a look at the price tag. I (think) I want to upgrade to make our geocaching experience that much easier? simpler?, but don't know which way to go. Any help much appreciated Thanks BS
  13. Thank you and 'Mouse' for this help. I'll need to go out today and check distances.......
  14. I have a cache thats been damaged and almost destroyed by a Council mower!! Is it permissible by Groundspeak rules to shift it a few hundred yards and just modify the entry with the new coords, or must I archive it and submit new cache? many thanks
  15. Thanks for these. The Hampstead Heath caches will be first on our list followed by a ride down to Greenwich....
  16. Planning a day trip to London by train July 3 & coming into Kings Cross. Can anyone please recommend some challenging/interesting caches within, say 5 miles of the station? We can travel by bus anywhere (free as we have bus passes) hence the (fairly) large radius. We will have about 10 hours in the City. I'm not sure about multi's...IMHO they can get very time consuming, but if they are interesting enough.... Thanks
  17. It would make more sense to add a list when you log your cache find. It gives you the option to click which TBs you left, it would make a lot of sense if it also gave the option to click which TBs you took. Excellent idea Team Tisri, how can this be initiated within GC.com though?
  18. It would really be a shame if it came down to that, but I really don't know what can be done. I don't know about other counties, but here in Lincolnshire caches lacking what the listing describes are very prevalent. Of 4 caches visited yesterday, 2 didn't contain what was specified (trackables that is).
  19. I enjoy picking up trackables (GC's & TB's) from caches wherever in the UK I happen to be and then dropping them off on my frequent travels around the country. However I am increasing finding that caches which say they contain either a GC or TB on finding and inspection, do not. Is this because people are taking them and forgetting to log them or are they being taken and then they are forgotten about? It's very frustrating, not least for the trackable owner who has probably forked out a fiver or more for each one! Just a little rant on a Sunday afternoon!!
  20. Odder and odder...I got notification of 2 caches found by going into the listing and reviewing the logs.
  21. Hi, I stopped getting email notifications from Groundspeak over the weekend whenever one of my caches were found (or DNF). Anyone else experiencing this or have I unwittingly unticked a box somewhere?
  22. Hi Off to Lakeland tomorrow for a few days based at Carnforth. Found lots of fairly interesting caches to go after mainly around Kendal, but I'm looking for something a bit more challenging (not in the physical sense!! (I'm 67)) but something that requires thinking about. We are going to use the bus to get around wherever practical making full use of the bus pass! Thanks in anticipation.
