  1. Here's an idea! How 'bout we make anew rule. NO INMATES ALLOWED. We can enforce it with big stickers on the outside of our caches.
  2. I have used GPXSonar for quite a while now and really like it. Just recently I discovered the export to html function in GSAK and wonder why I was so ignorant for so long! I still pack both but find that I am using GSAK more and more all the time.
  3. I use a program called ExpertGPS that you can open a GPX or LOC file with and then project it onto either a TOPO map or a satellite photo that the program downloads on demand from its server. I also use this to download my tracks onto so I can see where I went. High speed internet connection is almost a must however.
  4. I run a computer related business and part of it involves telephone technical support. I can tell you from my own experience that getting nasty with someone you need to help you out often has the opposite effect. Remember, you catch more flies with honey than you will with vinegar!
  5. Found this horny toad at our very first cache near Grand Junction Colorado.
  6. When a non geocacher finds a cache and takes it or otherwise damages it. A muggle is not a bad thing, thats how alot of us found out about this. Having your cache muggled is a bad thing.
  7. Congrats on the purchase and on the finds! You are gonna have a blast with this. Hope you don't have too many more hobbies because if you are like me you won't have a lot of time for them for a while.
  8. So is it OK to leave broken McToys in a cache or not?
  9. At least they are just Carpy. The trouty ones around here are driving me nuts!!
  10. Magellans and Macs........ I knew there was something I didn't like about the devil worship GPS's!
  11. Last summer my family (wife and son 11 and daughter 8) and I did a local urban multi which ended in a bird sanctuary area near a bike path. Was loads of fun solving all the puzzles to get to the three legs and the final cache was a nice tupperware filled with all the usual goodies. All in all a great cache. In fact one of my favorites to that point. The bike path happens to be on a route my kids ride their bikes to school on and my son (who is very excited about geocaching in general) decided to confide in his friend about the final stage of the cache being in close proximity to where they ride to school everyday. He also explained geocaching to him at the time. Of course one thing led to another and he eventually broke down and revealed the final leg of the cache to his friend. He told me about it and I explained to him why that was not a real good idea. Two months later, my son comes home and tells me he hears another friend bragging about how there was nothing left that was any good in the cache so he tossed it in the nearby pond!!! I took him there last night and sure enough it is gone. I emailed the cache owner (but have not heard back yet). I have told my son that he will be responsible to either pay the owner for the cache, or replace it himself. I think I did a good job of making them (my daughter was there when they showed to the friend) feel guilty and understand the need for keeping some things secret no matter how cool they are.
  12. Great! More ammo for the whacko book burners!
  13. Thanks Frank, called and got it coming! I also have the cracks but never got around to having it repaired since it has primarily been a backup to my gps v. Now I am trying to get my son going and would like to use the sportrak to train him. Wish I would have thought to complain about the cracks, I might have gotten a deal Oh well.
  14. Just yesterday after reading this thread and thinking, Man these guys must be idiots, I was going to my sons little league game. Get out of the car, grab keys, grab coat, grab water bottle and soda, lock car up. Gotta pee. Fortunately I parked right next to a portable toilet. I go in and the lid is up. I think to myself, man it would really suck to drop something like my keys in that hole so I close the lid. This is one of the new toilets see that has the urinal on the wall. This is a clean toilet, no smell no mess, so I decide I need to set my coat and stuff down and I set it on the now closed seat. I do my business and grab the drinks, then grab my coat and hear the keys bang against the back wall and see them partially disappear between the wall and the tank. Whew! Almost lost them. I went to grab them just as they continued their southward migration to the floor of the hut wedged between the back wall and the tank. Aint NO WAY my fat hand is gonna get in there to retrieve them. Now what???? Fortunately I had a spare key in my wallet to get back in the car. In my geocaching backpack I have been packing around a coiled up piece of bailing wire since I started. My wife is contantly wondering why in the world I would be packing that around with us. Now I know why. I fasioned a hook and after a little fishing in the honey hut I had my keys back.
  15. The screen on my magellan sportrac pro got severely scratched. Its out of warranty so I went ahead and took it apart. Good news is all I need is the outer housing (plastic top cover). Anybody got a dead sportrak they would sell me for parts? TIA
  16. In addition to the above, one of our local sporting goods stores always has a closeout table of camping/hiking related items. I always check there first when re-supplying and have picked up some cool stuff. First aid packs, camper repair kits, small flashlights etc etc. Almost all of the items are under a buck but sold new for a lot more.
  17. Since people deserve rights and not the fetish (or behavior if you prefer) they choose to identify themselves with (I don't march in Hetro Pride demontrations for example) I don't have any more issue with their stand on the fetish than I do the fact that they would not turn someone who was gay/homeless away who was in need of help. . I hate to do this being from Idaho and all but I couldn't agree more.
  18. LOL I've got an ex-wife that was like that too come to think of it! I use Ezdetatch as a plugin to outlook to do the chore for me. Once configured it is pretty cool.
  19. Yep, got the preview bookmarked but also have it delivered via email which automatically unzips upon receipt and stores in a folder I have set up to sync with my Axim so I always have the latest pq's with me. Now do I get a gold star?
  20. Hmmm. Whaddya know. I was using the Keystone approved method and didn't even know it.....
  21. There may be a better way, but I have a PQ set up for new caches that runs every day.
  22. I've used a Palm III, a Palm Vx, 2 different HP IPAQ's and now a Dell Axim X50v. All were expensive when new, and in their time equally as impressive. My dell NEVER goes outside the vehicle while caching. I was using the Palm Vx with cachemate to take with me caching until I discovered GPXSonar. I can't say enough about how much I love that program. I now have it loaded on the Axim and an IPAQ 1945 and I carry the Ipaq in my pack (securely with fingers crossed) and use it every time out. If cost is absolutely an issue, you will probably find yourself in the (used)Palm arena. If you have any other need for a handheld pc, you will be spending $$$ anyway, so take a look at the PPC's. I switched (kicking and screaming) several years ago due to a requirement at work and have NEVER regretted it. In fact I got a zire as a gift a while ago and played with it for a day and realized there was no going back
