  1. I'd be surprised if you get many answers about encrypting things, but ...... I see 2 types of 'encryption', not 3 to read this. One is the normal - then the other is pretty darn easy. Look at it again, and you'll see it.
  2. I'd add my vote for the A75... Heres why 1) 3.2 megapizels is great if all you print is 4x6 most of the time anyway. 2) 4AA's mean long life, yet faster flash recharge than 2 AA 3) CF for storage.. slightly bigger, but the cheapest of the memories.. watch for 512MB at about $30 on the web 4) Great overall camera (I have the A70, and have had 5 people buy the a70 or a75 from my recomendation and love it. 5) SMALL size still (especially given the power & batteries) As for those who say go higher megapixel - that means bigger filesizes and slower writing to disk... 3.2 is plenty for 99% of the people.
  3. Funny you ask this... I looked at your stats.. You have some hides yourself. At the bottom of the edit cache page is the following 2 statements (with links) and checkboxes: Yes. I have read and understand the guidelines for listing a cache. Yes. I have read and agree to the terms of use agreement.. Is this not exactly what you are asking for? And if I remember correctly EVER time you edit a page, it makes you re-check them... Abby Family: I know to submit a cache you have to say "Yes" you have read the guidelines. The thing is that does't mean a person actually has read the guidelines before saying yes. That is why I was using the analogy of installing software. Almost every piece of software you have to check a box saying you read and agree to the agreement. The thing is how many people actually read the agreement before checking the box. I'm not saying that is what is happening here as I do not know. Sorry if you took that wrong. I agree that there is that strong possibility that, like software there is the chance that people don't read before checking. I replied because it looked like you were asking for checkboxes with the part of the statement that I quoted, not commenting on the usage of them. Along that line, I hope that people do read them. I think these guidlines are actually MORE important than the stuff in software agreements. I'd hate to see bad caches squeek past the reviewers and cause damage to the sport.

  5. I think you made the right choice.. I had an ifinder for 2 days.. Returned it for a gold and never looked back!
  6. I'm sure there is other topics, but here is the answer: do this in your image: img src="http://www.geocaching.com/stats/img.aspx?uid=PUTUIDHERE&txt=Geocaching+Rocks!" Put your UID in the PUTUIDHERE spot, and even change the txt to your liking. as for the link part, you can do this: http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=PUTUIDHERE or there is other options.
  7. I do this alot. I find it nicer to be able to 'group' things than to load by cable. The tools I use are GSAK (nice for choosing groups of thing to load but not 100% necessary for what you want to do) and GPSBabel. If you have a loc file, use that as the input file. Choose Magellan SD files for the output type and give it a filename (note stay under 8 characters). Load this file onto the SD card using a usb card reader. In the units menu there is a card utilities menu for loading and saving waypoints. Feel free to email with more questions.
  8. OK.. I have a couple of cents here! 1) I actually have talked in email to the person who asked for some help. 2) The person has solved 3 of the 4 caches on their own (or with help from a family member with more math skills). 3) The person was asking for some help that I think may have been given without the 'slap on the wrist' that they got. I'm torn by both sides too... I can understand the creator wanting people to have effort in solving the puzzle. However, meeting other cachers (even via email) is interesting and sharing hints or suggestions is ok. Personally, in this case (the thread that got closed), what I got out of it was an appreciation for another cool set of puzzle caches in an area I doubt I'll ever see. What I think is most important is to be respectful. Be respectful of peoples wishes as much as you can, but also be nice to people who may cross the line in your eyes as to what they request here too.
  9. Thats a GREAT suggestion. Since switching to a gmail account, I havn't lost a since watch, pq or email.
  10. The way to get gpx is to go you your page and click on pocket query. Or go to http://www.geocaching.com/pocket You need to make a query up with the rules you want and then it will mail you a the results. Tips 1) Zip the results 2) Keep the number of finds smaller to keep the file size down.
  11. Just an FYI... who is your provider? I had a hotmail account that I was using... Emails to it worked fine. Emails from GC stopped completely... No watchlists, no emails from users through the pages, not even my pqs were getting through. I have a feeling hotmails spam filter was tossing them... I switched to a gmail account and immediately things work again.
  12. Not to be nit-picky here, but a couple of interesting point. 1) Our library has 'do not copy' stickers on cds,etc to remind people of copyright laws 2) If you got the mp3 from napster or the library, if there is a copyright - whats the real difference? 3) Whats the difference between sharing it via a box in the woods or on napster other than possible volume... So its ok to give to a couple people, but not 100? Where is the line? Now.. I can't say that I'm 100% clean either.. But I personally draw the line between copying something for myself and intentionally causing a spread. I love the idea of caches that promote better trades. I just don't buy that sharing copyrighted music is 'right' just because its in a box. The other concern I see here would be what bad press this can bring to geocaching. Where to draw the line? Its ok to trade 'stolen' (by copyright) music.... Does that mean its ok to trade stolen jewerly? How about drugs? I'm being a little dramatic here, but we have a tough enough time with caches gettin muggled or not allowed w/o making things worse.
  13. The funny thing I see about this is that I agree with one previous poster: On my lcd screen I can barely make out the difference between the alternating colors. However, my opinion is that as long as the FOUND jump out as very different from the other colors, I really don't care. Alternating or not, there is just the right amount of white space in the page. Even without the separators and not being able to see the alternating w/o looking REALLY close, the page still is VERY readable. Its not like two caches get confused together.. Personally as long as the format stays clear, I really don't care about the alternating colors. Just my 5cents (who needs penny's these days?)
  14. Wow.. nice logic indeed. I have to side with GC on this one... If their tightening of 'high speed' stat pulling has made the improvements on site performance and stopped user outages, more power to them! As fun a stat gathering and comparisons can be, I'll take a site where the primary users can get response over 'alternate' stat sites anyday. That may sound 'mean' to sites that try and give more with stats, but put it in perspective - which would you want more... outages and stats OR no outages and less stat capablilities.
  15. Cool and Thanks! As a web developer for a major trucking company I know how fun enhancement requests can be. I'm glad you guys are up for this.... In general the GC site is very stable (except for occasional volume issues) which speaks alot to how you are going about things.
  16. Forgive me if this has been discussed elsewhere, but the new cache size icons are a very nice addition. One more addition that would be fabulous is to add the same icon set in the same place when you get a cache listing back from the "Map it" screen when you click identify. The map it summary is a great place to see relative locations of caches in the area when you are out hunting. Having the size on this would be almost as usefull as the D/T criteria for what to go hunt next. Thanks in advance... Great job on incorporating new features (size icons & wap) into the main site.
  17. THANKS Jeremy!!!! The new icons ROCK! One additional request would be if its possible at some point in the near future to add the icons to the "Map it" page for when you click on Identify. That map feature is great because it can give very easy to see nearby caches when out on a daily hunt. Having the size there would be great too. Thanks in advance.
  18. I agree that if the size is listed in the search results (maybe just near difficulty), that would alleviate 99% of the issue for me. I want to be able to have a summary page of caches and be able to decide which one to hunt based on d/t and size. For example, I tend to avoid micros with my daughter, since she wants to trade. But I will hunt them more exclusively if on my own to save the full size for other times. I also have a palm with the details of the caches in the area I'm hunting, but I don't want to have to open 6 pages to figure out which 1 is not the micro.
  19. Either I think I'm 'brighter' than most, or your 5 on the difficulty is overrated. See my email, but I have the solution. Unfortunately theres no way I'm can go 1670 Miles to check how difficult the terrain is. Ok... now its probably a bit harder, since you modified it due to my feedback... but 5/5?? - - -time will tell.
  20. 1.52 at starbucks? Wow - that should have just about payed for the tax. Our group hasn't found anything really cool yet. I have seen a couple of items worth more than the typical less than a buck, but didn't trade since none were things I'd use. I have started with TN - Left something little for ones that have space if I'm alone. It is nice to see kids items in the caches too. I know my little one loves trading, as long as the item isn't broken its cool.
  21. I had no idea what it meant, but if you google LSMFT, you don't even need to open any pages... It is right in the short clips of the links on the first page... I guess you had to be in the right 'market'.... Never touched the stuff.
  22. Actually, I find that the best and easiest places to get dollar coins (mix of the old and new) is ANY post office stamp machine (big vending style, often in grocery stores) or any of the soda machines that take a five dollar bill. We have one at my work that will take a five and either give dollar coins as change for a purchase, or just to break the 5. Definately a nice item to swap, often as an upgrade to a little item. (I'm looking for the perfect gps holder and it needs to have a little pocket for these, so I can always have a few, so all I'll ever need is my gps and treo to be able to hit an 'off the cuff' caching moment.)
  23. This probably belongs in the newby section, but I'd recommend looking at GSAK. If you are a premium member, this tool will help get your caches to your palm using one of many methods.. My favorite is GSAK to web pages. I then put them on my memory card and use a offline browser. You can also plucker the data or use cachemate. Note, this all works best if you have a premium since GPX has 10 times the data of loc files.
  24. Vagabond.. Oops, my mistake.. .Just no routing and topo together then... I just know that I havn't bought the topo since only the directroute support routing and it says I cant load a topo on top of it. instructor... Great find!!!! if I find that, i'd pick one up for my daughter! welcome to the obsession!
  25. There is two basically identical versions of the magellan - (the gold and marine). The difference is what is the basemap and firmware from what I understand (see magellangps.com for more info). From what I understand, the base map info in the marine has better nautical information and less roads built in. The gold (mine) had basically all the highways around me on the base map, but no city details. I bought the $100 directroute maps which give TONS of data. (All streets, addresses, points of interest - gas, food, etc).. And it can route, ie tell you how to get there on the screen turn by turn. From what I understand if you don't want routing, but want high detail maps for marine and city.... Buy the marine and you can still add detail maps. The only difference is firmware - Load the standard firmware and you loose some marine functions, but can route. Load the marine firmware and no routine (but still maps) and much better nautical information. So you can supposidly make the marine into a gold just by uploading firmware. I hope this helps. I didn't see me using nautical charts (I only pleasure boat and thus position would be enough for my needs). BTW, there is also topo maps you can buy too, but you have to flip between them (ie no street detail and topo detail together). You can have both on your card and switch between them though. The routing ROCKS.. It beeps when turns are coming and tells you which way to turn. Unit + maps put me close to $300, but I don't regret it for a minute.
