  1. theUMP! A reviewer with a sense of humour, fun, and adventure. Isn't that what this is all about anyway!
  2. It's been almost 10 years since I was at Uluru, but I remember the sign where the climb starts. The traditional owners do not climb Uluru because of its spiritual significance. They request that visitors don't either because of 1) how close the track goes to a traditional dream-time sites and 2) feeling a sense of responsibility for visitors to their land. Many visitors come to Uluru with 'lifelong dreams' of climbing it, however don't understand the climate in the Red Centre, the extreme desert heat, which is then reflected back at you if you are walking in the heat of the day without shade (and there's no shade on Uluru!). It is not uncommon for people to die of heat exhaustion, etc - someone had a heart attack on Uluru and died while I was there. Someone else had died the week before. And this was autumn, not even the height of summer! (I was happy not to climb - any excuse really - I love climbing but the heat was insane!) There are plaques to the memories of some of the people who have died during the climb, which together with the warning sign you would think would keep people off it! Climbing access rights were a condition before title was given back to the traditional owners.
  3. And would you also please stop it being dark while Australians are at work and have fast internet access please?! But seriously, this is a lot of fun! I've got several co-workers checking it in the morning (when there's still enough light to see the nest).
  4. You will indeed enjoy seeing the photos from our trig points - pretty much a guarantee of splendid scenery, especially when we get some Tasmanian trigs listed
  5. Does anyone know b cubed california? He/she grabbed a travel bug from a Hawaiian cache in April and hasn't logged in since and does not respond to emails sent via his/her geocaching profile. The travel bug was in a race - and was a cute little fellow so must be feeling scared and alone outside of his native country!!
  6. Fantastic! Thanks to all of you! And let me know if the cache gets low on Tasmanian/Australian swaps - I can post more out to the maintainers if bay area cachers like the Aussie swaps! And thanks to all those cachers who already visited and helped racing bugs move on. There was quite a flurry of activity when the cache was approved! already bugs are as far afield as Hawai'i and one is attending an ENORMOUS cache event in Flordia this weekend. It's lots of fun for the Tasmanian cachers to watch this group spread out and see the interesting caches and events they are experiencing!
  7. If there are any cachers willing to help, there are some racing travel bugs who have not moved from their release cache, Devils' Release: The Ark. I'd really appreciate some help moving these bugs along! Didn't realise how un-popular the area would be.
  8. Thanks Marky! Good way to do it - in Australia we have a website that lets us recommend caches - so you can go to a state page, see the recommendations, see who/how many people recommended it etc, but a bookmark list works well - just hope we have the same taste There's a dog themed multi, so we should be fine. . .
  9. Thanks - several maps there that will come in handy. So, no must-do caches in the area? Guess I'll just troll through logs for recommendations. Can't wait - less than 2 weeks now!
  10. Just the sort of local knowledge that will come in handy! And I see what you mean about it being on the opposite side of the county park from the TB Hotel. It's also interesting to note the patterns of caches in the area - hmm, wonder where the trails are? Thanks, sammydee!
  11. G'day, I'm a cacher from Tasmania, Australia who will be attacking the area for a few days (well, for every moment I can escape from relatives who haven't seen me for years - I don't live on a different hemisphere for nothing!). Any suggestions for must-do caches in Morgan Hill, San Jose, Los Gatos, Santa Cruz. . .???? Travel bugs to Oz? And for those of you who are interested, Team Nazgul has been very welcoming in allowing me to use the Quicksilver TB Hotel and Sig Trading Post (GCMJX8) as a cache cachers can drop of TBs they would like to come back to Tasmania. I will only be in CA from 26-31 March, and then I'm off to French Ploynesia, Pitcairn Island, Easter Island, and Peru. I'll then be meeting a local cacher (my sister - chepup) at SFO on the 24th of April. Sooo. . .Team Nazgul has added two ziploc bags to the TB Hotel. One is labeled "Departure lounge: South Pacific" for late March and the other for April is labeled "Departure Lounge: Australia." Travel Bus From Oz! Also look out for a cache to be released in early April that will have Australian swaps (at least as its original contents) as well as being the release point for the TBs participating in the Tassie Bug Race! I'm really looking forward to an area that has 7billion% more caches than my tiny island state down under! Cheers- Snuva
