  1. We have run across a rubber snake cache. It was one probably similar to what the OP is describing. This one had a small piece of metal glued onto the underbelly of the snake and then a really, really small magnetic nano (you know the kind!) attached to the metal. Unfortunately, the glue selected did not hold up well with exposure to the elements and so the metal had come loose from the snake and we found the two within a close proximity and figured out what happened. We found the snake first - it was a little unnerving - and thought it must have something to do with the cache. Then looking closer in the immediate area, we found the nano attached to the small piece of metal with old glue residue. Snakes -- oogie!

  2. In the Dallas area I'd say Prime Suspect is legendary for being one of the original cachers in the city.

For me, number of finds or hides doesn't mean much, it's what you've done for the game. Folks like MustangJoni, Zeke's Uncle, Roland Oso, Dougshep, Tx Diva and Darkstar, Hedgehopper.

I'll second all of those and add GeoVamp, Dreamcacher (Wayne) and TxOilGas. TxOilGas aka Alan was the first to complete the Texas County Challenge putting in over 20K miles on his truck to complete it. Now THAT ALONE is legendary.

I posted that original list 30 min+ past my bedtime and the names weren't coming to me as well.

This is my family's first year geocaching, and we are learning the names of the cachers in our area. However, in our adventures, the names that seem to pop up again and again ALL OVER TEXAS have to be 9key and Mrs. Capt. Picard!

  3. my nuvi 500 is great.. but i gotta use a usb cable.. but paperless caching is built in by Garmin.. only nuvi i'm aware of that does the paperless thing via a gpx file. i get descriptions, hints and the last 5 logs. i can even long the cache with the gps which stores a field note on the gps.. i just cable it up and upload the field note to gc.com. really great

  5. That's one big pat on the back for Recruiting! As a community we have a questionable reputation with the rest of the world. For real - we use high tech equipment to hunt tupperware in the woods - do we not?!? So we call it geocaching and many others call it litter. Geocaching is banned in a number of areas because it is seen as litter, caches have been "detonated" by bomb squads, state park rangers despise us wandering off the trails and destroying the natural fauna or for not taking enough water and needing to be "rescued", etc... Needless to say, our reputation preceeds us in many ways. Conversely, just as many people have never heard of geocaching - and when we explain it to them in a nice, level-headed, this is a really cool game sort of way - we might just introduce them to a new hobby they can enjoy on their own, with family or with friends. This lady already had a negative experience with geocaching and she came to this forum for assistance. In the end, is it better to help someone and hopefully improve their view of geocaching? Or save face in front of fellow forum buddies and slam someone asking for help? What is the real risk?

  6. i'm very happy with my nuvi 500. all it's missing is a compas.. walking or driving. just switch from driving mode to walking mode and you can get right to GZ.

i'm sure there are many others that are better, but my 100 ebay purchase satisfies me just fine.

now, if it suddenly died today, i might buy something else.. dunno. the compass would be a great addition.

  7. there are critters out there that can and move caches when trying to get into them cause they smell good.. if it was a peanutbutter jar or the last hider was eating some crackers or something, a critter will move it just about every time if they are able.. and hungry..

coons, squirrels and some birds can be quite smart and strong.

  8. some i'm sure snicker a bit when they put a misleading comment in a log.. very tacky.

look for one of those magnetic suckers.. or the dreaded monoilament line.. since i'm starting to get a little older, my already poor eyesight is getting worse.. i can never find the monofilament line.. that stuff is totally invisible to me..

i have seen a bison tube hung on a bent paperclip in various places on a fence.. i'd really hate to give it away..

  9. it's been awhile.. i open mine with expert gps.. i thing the free easygps will do the same thing.. then there is a menu pick to view with google earth..

pretty cool last time i did it.... you can even export the .kml or whater it is and up load that to your own custom google map that you can then share to anyone with an internet connection.. google earth not required.

  10. with my nuvi 500, i have a large card.. i just plug into the laptop and move things around.. i made another directory where it doesn't load from (hide_this or something inside the garmin folder).. i just move things from there to the gpx directory..

works great you just need a laptop and a usb cable..

  11. i try to keep a few cheaper ball points in the truck.. some of the uni/gel pens are not indellible (check spelling) and will run when the log gets wet.. why sign the log if it will not be perminant. . the nicer ballpoints however do not seem to write well on a damp log.. cheap ones seem to always do the trick..

i guess pencils wont' run either.. but i like a pen..

  12. I have a Nuvi 500.. it works like any nuvi in the car and is one of the 2 nuvi's that support paperless geocaching built into the unit. i do not have to convert or use any other software other than a usb cable i already had..

no magnetic compass, but not all gpsr's have the eithe.. it is great.

i get driving directions to the cache, switch to walking mode, and then get either the compas or the rubber band to the cache inthe map view..

supports paperless via .gpx files you can get with a premmium account from geocaching.com

if you can only afford 1..... i feel it is great.. i'm plenty happy.. my pocket query gives me 1000 caches every day... i load it at work and am ready to get out with the family and find some caches..

  13. i get my mail at a PO box.. just put a sticker inside the door. folks put stickers and stamps on the outside of them all the time to help find theirs in the ocean of little doors all the time..

they might take it off.. but it'd be better than others putting stuff in it.. that'd be bad.

i'm sure lots of businesses have boxes where multiple people visit to get stuff.. caching is still not the same thing, but worth a shot..

you could mail the coords there on a post card and then just direct cachers to look at the card, but not take it.. how bout that? then it's offical mail placed in the cache by the postal service.. just don''t pick it up. don't know how long they'd leave it in there if you didn't pick it up.. as long is the box wasn't over full, i bet it'd stay there quite a long time!

  14. did that and my coords are fine.. when i go to the hide seek a cache page and hit the google link, it still comes up with green lake...

don't do that. instead, go to your profile page and click the "map it" icon on the right.

    now that does the trick!!

  15. I did that and it don't. What am I missing?

Not sure. I'd say log out and then log back in. Sometimes that helps.

When you click on "My Profile" the GC map display your area? I know Seattle/Green Lake is the defualt.

did that and my coords are fine.. when i go to the hide seek a cache page and hit the google link, it still comes up with green lake...

i guess it's not a default.. that implies you can change it.....

go with starbrands favorite.. ought to work every time..

  16. been loading most all of my gpx files into my nuvi 500 from work on an XP Pro machine with no problems.. when i go through the same process with my netbook at home which has Windows 7 Starter on it, the caches are there but their contents are empty on the gps.. i have to download it to the hard disk and then save it to the GPS.

on my work machine with XP pro, i open the .zip file, highlight and copy, then paste them over the previous version on the GPS.

any one have any idea why i have to do it different under XP than with 7Starter?

  17. if i sign on at home.. then go to work and sign in.. i'll usually have to re-sign in at home.. the websight seems to only let you sign on at 1 computer at a time....

very annoying.. but seems to be the way they want it..
