  1. using the official app:

load you pocket query before you leave your signal area

when you arrive, turn off your radio (airplane mode to saves mega battery)

fire up the official geocaching app (which still has no name)

    navagate to your cache...

i believe you will not have a map, but radar will work just fine as well as the compass.

by the way.. i've been meaning to try this but i've read it works fine

  2. last update caused mine to exit after the splash screen as well. i have a droid x..

go to settings, applications, manage applications. select the geocaching app and choose clear data and clear cache... no need to uninstall and reinstall..

i bet this helps other applications as well.

you have to remember that your android phone is not just a phone... it's a little computer. a little maintenance will be required i bet.

back to the subject at hand....

i think the app for sale by Groundspeak is the best one. it is fully integrated with the websight. might not be the most friendly to the human user, but i'm happy.

it is a work in progress. and yes gs... there is more work to be done.

  3. One of the things I learned in my research of the toy I got as swag ... is that Kinder Eggs are banned in the U.S. per an FDA old-school law about not having any non-food item in a food item unless it serves a functional purpose (such as a stick in a lollipop).

there's only one word i can use to comment on that: looooool.

    http://www.canada.com/life/Kinder+Surprise...3187/story.html

I don't know how they get around the FDA rules, but there is a rather large European Import grocery store in Houston, TX that has a large selection of candy and chocolates. I saw some kinder eggs there the last time I was there... maybe last March or so. Could have just been for Easter, but still... I was surprised to see them because I knew about the restriction.

  4. whatever you do, don't burn them out.. when they get tired of looking for something that may not be there, move on.. or buy icecream.

mine are 4 and 9. they have just recently gotten used to finding caches with only paper in it. i try and let them find half of them and then put it back once i have signed the log for us. if there is no tradables, they at least get to handle it a bit. when i have the neice and nephew with me, it's a bit like trying to bathe your cat in the toilet some times, but they all have a good time. spend some time online and understand where some of the caches are. i'd never try and take a group of kids to a cemetary, but the park or a decent vacant lot can be great.

my daughter likes to make art projects. we are trying to convert some of them into signature items. the assembly line moves a little slow though, but she does get to choose which cache we leave them in.

  5. you ought to be able to set up a pocket query for where you want to go and then download it to the phone and use it without service..

i'd also enable "airplane mode" which will shut off the radios.. when a phone searches for service that isn't there, it really uses up the battery.

also i believe some have said you can still use the gps whilel in airplane mode..

    you ought to be fine..

  6. i am down to only 1 running query.. but i seldom use it. 950 caches centered on my home coords. if i need them, i can download them right from the app.

most times, i browse an area from the web app while at the PC then drive to that area and view nearby caches and go from there.

for the first bit, i need the premium membership.. for the second bit, not too sure.

the pocket query is cool. i have it leave out caches i've found and i mostly search near home first.. so when i view my querie on the map, it looks like a big donut.. with me in the hole.

  7. i put things in lots of places.. around the house and in the dreaded garage.. and i really do have to find them later.

not a geocache... but i get just as excited when i find them..

as for your own geocache.. nah.. let us find it..

share the GC number.. maybe some of us are close enoug to make a find ourselves!

  8. As long as the IRS knows where to send my refund ill be fine. I make sure they have the correct return address. And you bet i don't trust them for sure.... but that is just how its done.

If i ask a CO a question you bet ill include my email. It just makes sense.

No return address. No reply. When we made up our caching name. I made sure it was also available with gmail. It just makes sense.

As for my private email address... too bad, ill not be sharing it here.

Seeing that on the screen confirms that it just looks bad ands a bit unfriendly.

  9. Thats how I know that its really not workong. In pocket queries, as you mentioned, it is filled out. On the web page, it is not. Beimg a premoum member id think it would know that and fill out those fields. As it is it kinda looks like something is broken.

  10. there are many times i wish i coudl get right to the cache.. with in inches.. there is one we have been searching for some time. GC1BBD5

I have emailed the CO.. evidently it is so well hidden and camoed, you can look at it and not know its there. sometimes i wish my gpsr would point right to it with that beeping sound that gets quicker as i get closer bringing me to with in a few inche..

but i'll be really proud when i find it the way it is.

caching is sort of like a double dog dare.. you do your best and dare me to find it.. all about the fun and challenge.

  11. There are some averaging applications for phones.. so far the one i have been playing with has been quite good.

i havent' placed any yet, but with the other gpsr in my hand, i get good numbers averaging with this app on my phone. neither of my stand alone units will average as some of the newer units will so i'm using the phone app.

i haven't had my smart phone very long, but i'm sure i will be able to get good coords with it when i get some practice.

good coords are a must for this game..

  12. I usually just put in a word or to from the gps.. wet, lid, broken, on ground.. whatever..

then i'll take a paragraph of our trip and paste infront of the note and finish it out in the field notes section.. takes just a sec.. per note.. that way i can do 20 of them over an hour while watching TV and eating dinner in my easy chair.

    works for me!

  13. I love my nuvi 500.. it's great.. not the perfect unit but it's great. does the paperless caching thing via pocket queries and .gpx files as good as any as far as i can tell. it has geocaching built in it. i can select a cache in driving mode.. drive there with turn by turn directions, switch to walking mode and then follow the rubber band line to GZ. they all have some trouble under trees. not sure if this unit is the worst, but i bet it is as good as most of them. waterproof, shock resistant (i dropped it on an asphalt parking lot and it tumbled and skidded quite a ways). it has some scratches on it, but still works great.

only thing it is really missing is a place to connect a lanyard. i took some heavy string and made a loop with a knot in it.. slipped the knot in the battery door and shut it. hooks on my neck strap just fine. that way i don't leave it at a cache. i did not have to modify the gps at all. being a ruggedized, unit, the battery door and the part of the case it attaches too is very sturdy. does not affect the water tight gasket either.. i can take pics if you need them..

you won't regret the purchase for the price.. i got mine used on ebay for 200 i think.

i'm now mainly using my droid, but the nuvi is always in the car when we go caching..

  14. Of course I have gmail on my droid. When I read them on my pc, all is well.on my phone with the stock gmail app,the hyperlink is there but I can't select it. Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do? Thanks in advance!

    :D

  15. With the custody battle now over, it is odd for your attorney to be receiving correspondence from her attorney addressing this sort of issue. These are emotional times though, and perhaps she IS trying to make you further miserable by attempting to take away from you one of the activities that make you and your kids most happy by insisting it really is not something they enjoy. I think there are many positive aspects to geocaching as well as opportunities for learning for our kids. Ours are still young, but I give my 4 year old the decryption key and hint on a piece of paper and a pencil and let him decode the hint. Then our 9 year old will read it out loud. We also have a second hand-held gps that we have loaded some geocaches onto on occasion, and the older one has become rather proficient in operating it and following where it leads. Puzzle caches and multi-stage caches can involve quite a bit of brain power. [We have a few around here that we just have not yet tried because we need to carve a chunk of time out of our weekends to make sure we can do them start to finish.] Further, placing a cache with the help of kids helps them learn responsibility. That cache's page needs to be monitored and the cache mainted in good condition. I don't know if it would help you or lend any "credit" to geocaching, since you are in Canada, but the Boy Scouts of America has a merit badge that can be earned for Geocaching. The Girl Scouts of America also offer a Hi Tech Hide & Seek badge that can be earned for Geocaching. If you check out the Boy Scout merit badge requirements, they are pretty detailed! In the end though, unless or until you are going before a judge again, don't let any of those emails rattle you. If they do, then she is accomplishing what she is setting out to do. Let her spend her money, bother her attorney, make him write ridiculous letters. It does not sound like a response is necessary at this point. You just be calm, collected and, finally - prepared if and when you need to be.
