  1. I have them both and really most always use the official app. it works well especailly since i have gps status as radar.

in the beginning it was lacking.. geobeagle was way better.. now it is much more polished but still has a wayyyyys to go.

here is what cgeo has that is great:

    live map

    keyword search

as soon as the official app gets these.. i will uninstall cgeo. i have faith it will happen.

  2. there are 2 tools in the android market i know of that will average and give good coords...

first is gpsfix and the other is gpsaverage. i would not place a cache without one of these apps or a gpsr that did the averaging for you..

works great on the droid x

each phone is different in construction which has a large impact on how accurate that thing will be.. some phones are good and some suck.

i have also noticed that some days, they all suck.. gpsr's included.

  3. and a good explanation of a ripper.. My IE takes info from GS and displays it on my screen.. If i were to copy that data and paste it into a database.. is that ripping/scraping? dont' think so.. now if i wrote a program to automate that process, then that very well may be.

now supposidly he has some things in place that throttle that data gathering process to more closely simulate a user gathering data or viewing data using their browser. I think it is a little slow. i can pan my google map and the beta map pretty quickly to see lots of caches. If i have a premium membership and i am only caching.. i really see no harm other that GS says it is a violation. its their sandbox and their rules.

Here is my hones opinion of using both of them.. I do 90% of my caching with the official app.. only thing i like cgeo for is the live map.. that thing rocks!!!! when i get to GS with that, i exit cgeo and then do a nearby search witht he offical app.. radar in and log the find. back in the truck.. drop the droid x in the car mount.. hit the cgeo shortcut and drive down the road. it shows nearby caches automatically.. with the official app, you have to hit menu and then search here and then center the map on your location.. way too much reading and button pushing while driving.. with cgeo.. it's snap and go.. for miles and miles.

I am accustomed to and prefer the interface in the official app.. there are parts of it that are clumsey, but they make it better with every update and i have complete faith that it will only get better.

another thing cgeo has is a track file displayed while driving around.. helps to know i've been down that road before and to the the next turn.. GS is considering this for their app as well.. i can't wait.

as soon as the live map is availiable the GS app (whatever it is called) will be my only tool.

  4. I'm not saying its the best, just that I'm a fan and user. Does it work any better? Dunno. But it is the official app by the company with the servers, employees and all that.i support them and what they are doing.i have read that they are working on the app to bring it up to parity with any other apps o ut there feature for feature. Good enough for me.

I will also say that the live map in cgeo while driving on a trip is the bees knees. GS is working on that too. I do however find and log all my caches with the official app.

  5. you wont' get much of a response on that app from here.. it has been claimed by Groundspeek that that app violated the Terms Of Use. my suggestion is to find another forum where it is discussed.

I am a fan/user of the official app anyway.. but i'm a nice guy and will offer this sugguestion.

  6. so what did you finally end up with?

I have a NUVI500 that is just awsome for geocaching.. but the roads are getting a little out of date. i read in a post prolly about a year ago about someone updating their gpsr(not sure if it was a nuvi500 or not) and all the lakes were gone. i don't use mine on a boat, but knowing there is a body of water in my way might be helpful some day.

please take a minute or 2 to describe what you ended up with.. updated maps.. more POI data or whatever.. i'm considering updating the map, but i don't want to spend the money and go through the trouble if it takes something else away i use.

glad you got it working by the way.
