  1. If you accidentally broke somebody's cache container - placing a heavy stone back over it, breaking a lock tab off it... whatever

would you admit to the owner in your log you had done it?

would you privately email the owner explaining?

    Would you replace the container?

Would you just quietly leave it to go soggy and the contents get ruined?

I didn't actually break it.. i threw it away cause it didn't look like a geocache. After it was replaced, and i found it again it was more identified as a geocache. The first one was something I thought a kid or someone had placed. The second one was very similar but caught my eye the second time. The cache won't last long.

I didn't tell anyone but my wife.

  2. There are a few apps that do this... only one i have used though is expertgps... i imported a map many years ago.. i needed to know the coords of a few points on the map.. i remember it being more work than i wanted to put into it.

sounds like you already have the coords for the dots.. sounds like cake. i think.

I did register my version of easygps to expertgps.. not sure if you can do the maps inthe free version (easygps)

  3. My Legend does this all the time.. I have carried it on my ATV in a ram mount many many times. I think the vibrations had something to do with it.

I just tap it on the same corner and the heel of my hand and it comes back. no biggie. just a tap, not quite a whack.

  4. I guess that part of the geocaching game is FTF'ing around this area and it can be an advantage to have early indication of new caches. I will try to set up the Gmail for it till android has its own app or whatever.

Thanks for all who took the trouble to respond---Thanks "shank's

We love getting an FTF. We will somewhat modify our schedules for one. Not a official part of the game but we llike it. Adds an extra layer to the game that's all.

  5. at a recent event here in Texas, Delorme was a huge supporter. garmin, not so much. that went a long way to makeing a Delorme fan out of this Garmin fan. I think Garmin is pushing Opencaching over Geocaching although they do support geocaching via their gpsrs/

i will look closely at them for my next gps purchase.

  6. i have a nuvi 500... i also have a memorycard in it.. when i plug it into the computer, i get 2 drive letters.. one is the gps and the other is the memory card.

just to keep things simple, i put all my pocket queries on the sd card. the maximum number of caches is somewhere around 2500 caches regardless of the number of pocket queries.

if you put too many caches on it, you'll get a message stating just that.

drop all your .gpx files in the gpx directory... if the directory does not exist.. just create them the same way as they are on the gps..

  7. i also have to add.. if it is funny.. make the call or confront someone.. do something! strike up a conversation.. you might be instantly put at ease.. or have your fears confirmed.

remember in the news? i think elizabeth smart was led all over the place... no one said anything and looking back on it things werent' right.. (maybe i'm getting my news crossed a bit) at any rate, i'd rather be safe than sorry.

yes... cops can be over zelous.. that can and usually does suck. Most of them are great and do a good job.

I'm really sorry the OP had all the problems.. but he slept that night in the same house as his daughter.. shook up, but home. right where they should have been.

    it's a tough situation..

  8. i could be mistaken abotu my placement of the word MUST.... This happened to a friend of mine, not to me.. but i did get the story first person..

either the kid must answer or you must let them ask the kid.. you aren't allowed to be present (if you are the possible offender of course)

in either case the MUST is very uncomfortable... just the idea that someone could question one of my kids about me... is just too unnerving to think about.

The case i mentioned just above went all the way to the grand jury and tossed out. all his savings went to defend and ramain bonded out of jail. the cops thought something was awry, social services said it was fine, but the cop still pressed it and he lost all that money fighting a stupid cop.. now he can't pass a background check to go on field trips with his church's youth group..

this all means that things can and do go horribly awry someitmes... you can defend yourself if you have an extra 100grand laying around to stay out of jail and employed and pay your attorney.

sorry to add to the horrible mess discussed in this thread..

  9. They wouldn't have talked to my daughter away from me. They wouldn't have been let in my house. Not without a lawyer present first. Sounds like very shady, suspect police work to me.

There is *no* circumstance in which I would let me kids talk to the police separately in this situation. There is no telling what these cops have been told and whether or not they are on a witch hunt. If you feel you must, at least tell the police you are not going to let them talk to your kid without a video camera recording the whole conversation.

I am, in fact, a lawyer and no good can ever come of letting police talk to your kids if the police are suspicious about you.

it is most likely the law that you have to let them.. sad but true..

    No. Absolutely not.

around here it is.. the police can show up at your kids school and ask them anything.. they MUST answer.. this is horrible policy from one point of view.. but.... if there was a problem, they need a way to find out. a child will never talk to cops about being molested with the molester present. maybe a witness has to be present too.. but the cops can question your child.

it's a tough problem.. if they rescue one child.. then it works. and i believe they have some success.

now.. if they question my kids.. there better be a witness or someone there.. there is a better way to handle it other than asking the kid to "step outside"..

as for something constructive to add to this thread... I would go to the chief of police or the mayors office or something. they need a better way to handle this to make sure it is done better next time. you can always take out an add in the paper to alert the community to a policy that may need improvement.

  10. may have a gun on his person or in the geobag inside the mini van full of kids.

Heavens, I hope not! Leaving a weapon in reach of the rugrats is a very, very, very bad idea. Very bad. :yikes::sad:

some children are better shots than adults.. start them out early teach them well. an uneducated child with a gun is a definite no no.. no doubt.. an educated kid with a gun may be out hunting or maybe cleaning/maintaining his weapon. happens all the time. i was very young when i got my first gun. one of my most prized possessions. I've only bought a few more as an adult. Haven't carried one caching yet. if the area is dangerous.. i just stay away. those caches aren't as important as my families safety.

  11. It's kinda funny - my wife had just the opposite happen.

She was at a small playground with our young daughter, and there was a creepy looking guy hanging around (he didn't have a child with him). She left, and called the local police. "What do you want us to do, arrest him?" was their annoyed response. No, maybe send a car around and see what is up? Just the precense of an officer might have had him "move along."

    Define "creepy looking"

if i saw a dog with glasses.. that be creepy.. just sayin'

creepyness is in the eye of the beholder.

it is most likely the law that you have to let them.. sad but true.. when they talk to your child, they might be grilled and possibly asked if they are telling the truth.

I cache with my family and sometimes my son or daughter.. if someone thought they were in danger.. plese pick up the phone.. that how the system works.. if you get a jerk of of a cop... then that is too bad.. I teach my kids that cops are nice and can be trusted.. i understand differently that they are people too..

nothing man ever created is or will be perfect.. especially the legal system.
