  1. i second the nuvi 500.. and it is ruggedized.. tested that once for myself.. does the paperless thing as well.. drag and drop your gpx file to the gps, select the Geocaching icon on the screen, choose your cache and take off.. switch from driving mode to walking mode when you get out of the car and you're in business. all it is missing is a neck/wrist strap. whatever unit you get.. get one that supports paperless geocaching or at least gpx files.. you will avoid secondary software for communicating with the gps. i just overwrite my old gpx file with the new one from my pocket query. the nuvi 500 as well as many others do this. if you need to save a little cash.. try ebay.. got mine for 200 bucks tenderly used. check out users reviews here and you'll at least be more comfortable with your choice.
  2. You can. (Include the quotation marks.) thanks for the tip.. i figured the min character limit was a limit.. i guess the quotes add 2 characters..
  3. i have a nuvi 500 and a Legend.. when i plug in the nuvi.. it comes up as an external drive.. just drag and drop same as a flash drive. with the legend.. i used expert gps.. it was free. import the gpx file into expert gps and then send the waypoints to the gps.. only rub i had with this gps was i had to manually delete waypoints i no longer needed.. or wipe them all out at once.. i assume your gps will be one of those methods..
  4. i have a nuvi 500. . didn't know about the gpx file limit.. but it explains a few things.. i have like 8 or so in there.. just keeps displaying them all .. nice to know i'm a ways from the limit. i never read this in the manual either.. thanks for the info.. very enlightening..
  5. i most always get my pocket querys by lunch.. haven't seen any of them yet. websight also says they haven't ran yet either.. the day is checked too. just wondering.. it's friday and i'll have some time to maybe go find a few.. be nice to have new loggs. is it possible the upgrades affected them?
  6. gonna load up the popup camper and the family and try and get as many of the "texas geocache challenge" caches as we can over spring break. i know it's over by then, but the caches will still be available. my question is, can i write a pocket query to get just these 12 caches? i hate to write 12 individual pocket queries.. it seems more efficent to have one query to get the 12 caches.. that way i get a gpx file with logs and such in it. all i gotta to is run it the day or so before we pull out. i can list an individual cache to look for.. can i separate multiple caches by a , or a ; or something? thanks
  7. I have a Garmin NUVI 500 i got off ebay for 200 bucks. it seems perfect on the street and has an off-road or walking mode. both modes support paperless geocaching. loggs, descripton, hints.. it's great. i'm sure many of the other unnits do the paperless thing great as well.. i was ready to replace my magellan crossover and used that one mostly for driving, but was ready for an upgrade. i'm super happy with the nuvi 500. when i plug in the usb cable it shows up just like a flash drive, i drag over my gpx file and i'm off. others may be better.. but i'm happy with what i have. the only change i think i'd make is a place for a lanyard. it'd be nice to put it around my neck like my etrex legend. but the nuvi fits in my back pocket. get educated before you make your purchase and i'm sure you'll be happy
  8. just thought of this.. haven't seen it yet since i'm new to geocaching... are there any caches that purposly make a picture when viewed on a map? it would probably be difficult to find cache locations near the coords to make the points on the map, but it'd be just as good an idea as some others i have seen here.
  9. load the gpx file into your preferred software on the pc.. then load all those points to your gps..
  10. i'm very happy with my nuvi 500.. i have an etrex legend i take on my ATV when trail riding.. but my nuvi is great. my legend has a neck strap, but then reception is not good unless it is parallel to the ground. my nuvi is great in my jacket pocket for reception, but has not strap nor a place to attach one. that is my ONLY beef with my nuvi 500 so far. and i got it for 200 bucks. sort of like a 2 for 1.
  11. i think i figured it out.. i can only see caches on the gps when the zoom is down to 1.2 miles. if the zoom is any farther out than that, i get no icons on the screen.
  12. I have points from a couple pocket queries.. 500 points in a couple of them. added a half gig sd card for extra files so i didn't mix up things in the internal memory. anyway, i don't think i'm seeing all the points in all my gpx files.. is the max number of points i'll ever see 500 or is it 500 per gpx file?
  13. i have a legend and have had no problems.. i can even send caches to my gps wiht the web addon from here.. i've had my usb 2 serial adapter for quite some time.. on my netbook with win7 starter, i just googled the brand and was lucky.. they still exist and still sell the same adapter. i downloaded the win7 driver and am back in business. my adapter is made by hawking. i use streets and trips, expert gps, and the garmin tool from geocaching.com all with no problems. what other hardware do ou have.. go into setup and change you INTERFACE to GARMIN. i think that is the only config option for the gps itself. i was very supprised how well the web tool worked.. when browsing a cache, i just hook it up, turn on the gps and click send to gps.. it scans for it, finds it and sends it on in. good luck
