  1. i mainly use a netbook with no mouse or scroll wheel.. i hit the plus or minus on the screen and then wait for it to update.. i have lots of routes generated and they all work....

just found out today that i can put in an approximate address and then drag the ends or the middle for that matter to get the caches i'm looking for included.

they are running lots of stuff ontop of google maps with their own database and then updating your pc.. it will take a few seconds.. there is lots going on..

  2. i have a 9 and a 4 yr old.. dont' have thousands of caches yet.. it'll take me years.. i load my PQ every day and am prepared to cache if we have the time.. i kinda burned them out a bit going every evening.. too many micros with no trade items.. they like to trade for something worthless, which goes in our cache bag.. we then can leave something for something else.

we just went on a camping trip and found a few and then found a few more on the trip back via caches along a route. it's a great break from many hours in the car. breaks the trip up for them. i always try to let one of them out of the car to make the find when i get us to GZ. i let my navigator/wife look at the caches coming up while i'm driving. i can't zoom in and read the description and stuff. i could stop and plan ahead a bit, but with 2 kids, plans are often foiled.

our next trip will be 3X as long.. caching on that one too. it'll take all day to get there and then to get back. caching really slows you down.

instead of going to the local grocery store with them, we'll sometimes look at the map and go to a different store near a cache. there are lots near us, just some of them on the shadier side of town. takes a saturday daytime trip for thoses. we'll stop by the donut shop and take a swing through the other side of town on the way home.

now that school is out we won't have to fret too much caching on a school night.. hard to get homework, bath and dinner and all on a school night. still gotta get them to daycare and me to work though..

sucks when life gets in the way of life..

  3. the nuvi 500 supports paperless caching via a gpx file.. gives driving directions to the cache.. then you switch to walking mode and get right to the coords.. all it's missing is a neck strap.

ruggedized and waterproof to a couple metters as most other outdoor gpsr's are.. great unit.. if mine dies i just might get another.

it does not have a magnetic compass.. that and the strap are the only downers i can see.. 200 bucks off ebay too!

  4. I use a Garmin Nuvi 500.. it does street navagation as well as paperless geocaching with geocaching.com. all built in by Garmin.

i load my gpx files.. pick destination and it routes me right too it. when i get out of the car i switch from driving to walking mode and get right to the GZ. it's great.

there are other gpsr's that do this.. not sure what they all are..

you can look at where you want to go with google maps right from the cache page.. or just start driving in the general direction.. if you are familiar with that area, it'd be easy.. if not familar with the area, get a map somehow.

  5. i use a RAM mount on my ATV.. they make mounts for anything. works great for my nuvi 500.. i wanted something really strong so as not to loose it to bumps, limbs and such.. might be a little bulky for a bike, but take a look.

the nuvi 500 bounces as well.. i use it on road, off road and for paperless geocaching. field notes work great too. it's a one stop shop. only missing a wrist strap and a magnetic compass.

the Garmin brand bike mount is smaller, but uses the same clip as the suction mount.. in my opinion, not stout enough. most will bounce, but if it hits the road and then the car behind you runs over it.. none of them will survive.

  6. i've been looking at android based phones.. which one will the the one to get? my contract is up oct 21st.. i want to get the right one.. might be the droid.. any one know?

  7. i hit the button for the "MY FINDS" query.. email came right in.. but it is missing lots of entries.. only has 118 in it and our profile shows 174.

    have i done something wrong?

i have opened it in gsak and expertgps.. same counts in both programs.. it is definately missing some cache entries..

  8. it's slow but better than nothing.. i have a normal cellphone with unlimited data.. not a smart phone so it's a little cheaper..

when i must, i use my usb cable and dial a pre-paid internet dial up account. slow as christmas, but if you got the time, the data is there. even works driving down the road.

i have heard of people getting fast internet access with a droid.. but i do not understand how that would work. i only can speak for what i have done.

the pay as you go internet is nice.. lob them 20 bucks and i'm good for over a year.. i usually find wifi at a public place or hotel room so i don't use it so much anymore. my provider is bamnet.. i'm sure there are others. i included the name as it was hard for me to discover.. certainly not an advertisement.

i have read that the pay as you go cell phones do not allow you to connect them to a pc so there'd be a change for you there as well..

  9. also, read the logs.. some call them spoilers, but there are sometimes clues.. coords 50' off. hard climb.. stepped in a hole. other things that might help you zero in...

the main thing to see is several DNF's,, if a few other cachers did not find it.. don't waste your time. add it to your watch list and if it pops up, then go give it a whirl.

it is really a drag to drive to an area to find out that several caches are not there only after you have spent 30 minutes looking for it. read the logs first.. your luck may be better.

  10. i've been having the same problem at home on my netbook.. laptop, desktop and work desktops are fine...

when i get home, i know i'll have to wake up my netbook, and log in..

i can reboot at work and not have too.. all of my stuff uses the latesst IE.

my netbook also has windows 7.. tried doing a selective cookie delete.. that sucker hides them all over the place.. haven't broken down and just deleted all of them yet.. but i may have too..

this is the only machine where i have the problem.

  11. being premium members, we have a pocket query delivered to our inbox every day.. it gets all caches neares to our home coords.. we mostly cache near by.. as i find caches, the query ignores them.. thus we are searching in a donut of caches on the map.. we started in the center and are working our way out.. if the hole in the donut gets too big, i'll just expand the radius out a bit or start creating more donuts near by. we've only just started so we have a small hole in our donut right now.. but we keep nibbling away at it.. yummy..

  12. i went through the steps of changing our email address. a few hours later it asked us to verify.. haven't gotten the email yet.. i started yesterday evening..

i won't get any information.. . pocket queries, updates, or anything till it's done.. i guess.

i've hit the button a number of times, but still haven't gotten the validation code.. what have i done wrong?

  13. a nuvi 500 does both.. turn by turn and papeless geocaching.. got mine for 200 bucks on ebay.. be patient and get one used. may take a while, but it can be done.

i have the magellan crossover. doesn't zoom down to the same level as my garmins.. i also have a etrex legend. the arrow is like 150 ft long at max zoom.

i like my nuvi.. i'm sure others are much better but a few c notes is a big deal to me..

  14. yep.. that's why i wondered why i kept having to do it.

just fired up a new tab in IE.. to check. had to log in yet again...

note the box says rememer me.. not keep me logged in for x days..

which is the intended functionality? i assume it is to stay logged in.

as mentioned above by others.. i now often have to log into geocaching and the forums.. a single login used to get both done.

  15. my computers at home and work are doing the same thing all of the sudden.. there has been a security update from microsoft.. could that have anything to do with it?

also.. my family and I cache together, so my wife and I are often logged in at the same time.. viewing caches or the forum. could this cause any problems?
