  1. You don't indicate how you go about downloading the files, but, if you are doing it directly from the cache page the files are *.loc files rather than *.gpx files. This would likely explain the mysterious file migration you are experiencing.
  2. Maybe folks should mind their own business and stop playing cache police. As for security, police bomb squads are constantly blowing up Geocaches. It's mostly an excuse to play with some of the cool bomb disposal equipment recently purchased from their bloated Homeland Security budgets. I'll shut up now...
  3. What's the deal with caching solo? I'm a solo cacher and would have it no other way. I've cached with others on a few occasions but prefer to do it alone. As to the original poster my only suggestion is - Shut down the pity party and stop feeling sorry for yourself. No one but you truly cares whether you stop caching or not.
  4. I agree. For me, the H20 emulator was a huge help. By the time my first iFinder arrived in the mail I was familiar with the features and had all my data fields set up.
  5. I'm happy you're satisfied with it. I guess I'm just spoiled. The iFinder has features which I am very fond of. Like being able to modify the style and color of my track line so I can tell it apart from other map features or from imported trails. Like being able to zoom way out and still see roads and road names. Like being able to check the date on my GPS as I prepare to sign a cache log. Like having a projection feature to do offset caches. A measuring tool on the map is also handy. This is a partial list.
  6. Does anyone still use an Endura? After the last so called "upgrade", I thought everyone might send them back and buy a Garmin or something. As for myself, I just parked my Out and Back and went back to using my trusty old iFinder H20C. Other than the Endura map options (topo and aerials downloads) the iFinder runs circles around the Enduras. What follows is a few of the reasons why I went back to using my H20C: Longer battery life. More useful map display (MapCreate). Lots more trail options. Lots more data fields (including a DATE FIELD!). Waypoint averaging and waypoint projections. I'll keep my Out and Back since I've made an investment in maps, but unless I'm bushwhacking a trail and need the topos, I'll be caching with my H20C.
  7. No doubt that they are more interesting to read. And much more satisfying to the cache owner as well. Does that mean that a "TFTC" is a bad log ? That the cacher doesn't care, is bored, etc ? I just cannot wrap my head around reading that as a total brush-off. How would you feel if my response to your question was, "whatever..."? A minimal response generally displays a lack of interest, wouldn't you agree? My take on this would be "A minimal response generally displays a lack of interest for any part of the game except earning a smiley."
  8. It's a little belated, but the phrase "caveat emptor" comes to mind.
  9. true, but sounds like a stockholder...
  10. Yea, you probably use the ENT/SAVE (Enter & Save) key to "save data, accept values or execute menu commands." There are manuals u can download at Lowrance.com
  11. I use an Axim X5 400MHz PDA installed with GPXsonar and an older version of MS pocket Streets and Trips. It works fine for paperless geocaching.
  12. You might also look into a program called Global Mapper (single license ~$350). Many maps and shape files are available online for free. Scanned maps can be geo-referenced, line features traced and exported in various device formats. I use it in Geocaching to export roads, boundaries, trails, waypoints, etc. which I then load into my Lowrance GPS and use in the field.
  13. It's usually a good idea to do your product research BEFORE you buy.
  14. I don't plan on returning my Out & Back but will use it when I go on long trail caching trips where the USGS topo maps are very handy. Otherwise, I have reverted back to my trusty H20c. The H20c has all the features and data fields the Endura line should have had.
  15. I tried a Lexerd antiglare on my Out & Back and it gave everything a "fuzzy" out of focus look. The crystal clear was much better.
  16. I have a few issues with my Out & Back but this is not one of them. I have yet to fail to find a cache because my O & B stopped navigating when it reached ground zero. Once I reach that point a GPS becomes of little use and I began using geo-intuition to locate the hiding place. If I go too far from GZ the unit will start to navigate again and guide me back. I'm reminded of a saying about poor carpenters and their tools but I digress...
  17. The waypoint projections I've done always involve using a reference coordinates with a distance and bearing to come up with the projected coordinates. I'm not sure what you have there.
  18. The headline on the Lowrance site could give one the impression ("Endura Adds Marine Mapping Functionality") that the important improvements of 1.4 were intended primarily for the marine market.
  19. The upgrade install was uneventful. I am pleased with the improvements to the map, in particular the display of State Forest Boundaries. I am disappointed there is still no date display as well as the items previously mentioned.
  20. Unless it's been addressed in 1.4, Enduras will not do projections.
