  1. To clarify something not addressed by the previous responses, dedicated GPS devices receive signals from navigation satellites, not cellular phone antennas.
  2. So Magellan replaced your wife's second hand Magellan Explorist 400 with a refurbished unit? That was pretty decent of them.
  3. If you look in the "Help" section of GSAK you will find a list of tags. %name is probably the one you want.
  4. I use the 1450 as a navagational aid primarily for Geocaching. I use GSAK to export Geocache files in GPX format to my PC and then copy them to the waypoint file of the 1450. Prior to the recent 1450 FW update favorites where displayed on the maps of my unit as small black squares. While this was not a problem for me I do like the treasure chest better. I am of the impression this change in favorite icons was a result of this recent Nuvi FW update. If this is not the case, please explain.
  5. Was the software updated since Nov. 20th? I was getting the black boxes, so I upgraded before Thanksgiving. I'm still getting black boxes. What method are you using to put the geocaches in? My husband and I spent days trying different methods of putting them in the Nuvi - both as favorites & POI's and nothing was consistant. We currently use GSAK and a macro and don't really care what they look like. Was there an update in the last 10 days? I'm not sure when this most recent update was released, but after just now updating my 1450 the maps now display caches as treasure chest rather than little black boxes!
  6. There are two sides to every story and we only have one.
  7. Last time I checked glass containers were considered a no-no.
  8. I must be missing something here. Why the need to display the coordinates?
  9. Most would, but not all. For us, our 1350T Nuvi does a great job. It all depends on where and how you plan on caching. If all your finds are visible from the road I suppose a Nuvi would be fine. I stand corrected.
  10. 1) The Nuvis are designed primarily for vehicle routing and should not be expected to perform as well off road. 2) Using cache placement as a test for GPS accuracy is unwise.
  11. Thanks Indotguy, if I had a phone like my Mom's I could use that. What would you suggest a basic, inexpensive handheld unit to buy? I would suggest the new Garmin Etrex line if your serious.
  12. If you feel you will stick with the hobby for more than a few months, I believe most 'experienced' players would agree that you should consider purchasing a basic handheld unit.
  13. GSAK is awesome. I created and saved two different GSAK GPX/LOC Export files. One is for the Nuvi and has a Waypoint Name tag of "%name". The other is for the PN-60 and its Waypoint name tag is "%code". As long as I remember to use the right file for the appropriate device I'm in business!
  14. Mystery solved. In the GSAK GPX/LOC Export format I had changed the Waypoint Name from "%code" to "%name" so I would get cache names on my Nuvi maps instead of GC codes. Apparently the Field Notes upload format did not approve. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions.
  15. I'll take a look but I am not sure what you mean by 'blank lines' between entries. I have not made any changes to the device since I last uploaded notes. I checked the existing logs on the PN-60 and some had blank spaces between them and some did not. There are no blank lines between any of the entries when I open the fieldnotes.txt file on my PC. There were no comments in any of the notes I tried to upload.
  16. The original ones I had problems with were found on Sunday, Oct. 16th.
  17. I just finished a test where I Logged five caches as found on my PN-60. The logs are displayed on the GPS and when connected to the PC I can see the logs when I open the Field Notes.txt file. I tried to upload these ("Ignore logs before 10/09/2011 11:08:00" box Unchecked) and got zero records. (having previously erased all old logs from the system).
  18. I tried that and all I got was 200+ previously downloaded field notes but not the five new ones I logged today.
  19. I've been using the Geocaching.com site to upload field notes for over a year with no problem until today. The GPS is recognized and the Field Notes file is displayed. Everything is normal until I click on the "download" button and it tells me there are no field notes to display. I checked the GPS and confirmed five new field notes are there. I tried rebooting and re-connecting the device to no avail. Any suggestions?
  20. Update - I received my Nuvi 1450 last week and love it. After messing with GSAK I've decided that downloading caches to the unit in GPX format suits my purpose. The caches are displayed on the map and I can delete them from the favorites list after logging them. I was also able to locate a public lands map overlay for my state from gpsfiledepot which is pretty awesome.
  21. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to experiment once I actually get the device. Since I'm planning on using it mainly for Geo-navigation I'll be looking a GSAK macro that is fairly quick and simple yet does what needs to be done. My PN-60 will be doing all the heavy lifting.
  22. For all Nuvi users I would recommend using GSAK and one of the excellent macros that will load an unlimited number of caches. You get the complete cache page info making your Nuvi a virtual paperless caching device. Excellent advice. I'm a big fan of GSAK and use it to plug caches into all my devices. Question: Do the GSAK micros allow modifications to cache icons sent to the Nuvi? In other words, can I expect a Nuvi 1450 or similar to display Geocaches as "treasure chest", etc. on the map?
  23. On a related matter, I'm considering a Nuvi (possibly a 1450?) to use in my vehicle for Geo-navigation purposes. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.
  24. Sure I've seen him. About a year ago I watched Bigfoot, Santa Claus, Nessie and about a dozen Elves square dancing in a forest clearing at midnight during a full moon.
  25. I log all my finds in a timely manner (usually the day found) and expect at least a semblance of this from others. Anyone who logs a cache a year after the fact is obviously not very 'into' the hobby and I do not see why they would even bother logging at all at this point. If an individual is so disinterested or preoccupied they can't post a log in a decent time frame they should consider finding another hobby. Logs that are posted on my hides six months or more late are usually deleted unless a good reason for the delay is given.
