I imagine this has been asked several times before. I searched the forums and tried to read the instructions, but didn't get anywhere.
I've got the basic Garmin eTrex with the black and white screen. The software is probably out of date, though I'm not sure. It's version 2.14
I'd like to update the software and also download cache data from geocaching.com, but I don''t have the cable. I guess I could buy one, but I'll have to hurry. Vacation starts in a week.
But... my computer doesn't have a serial port. Just a USB port.
I have a generic USB-to-serial adaptor, which I bought for some non-GPS device. I could never get it to work with the other device.
My questions
--Am I going to get any important benefit from updating the software?
--I notice this unit doesn't seem to have WAAS capability. Would updating the software add that feature?
--How well do generic serial-->USB adaptors work on this unit?
--By the time I buy a serial cable and possibly a Garmin brand serial-->USB adaptor, I've pretty much spent the original purchase price of the GPS. I don't want to spend a lot of money. I just need the basics. Does it make more financial sense to start over with another GPS device that includes a USB port?
