  1. If you're cheap, you can use a common serial sync cable and a GPS cable and use a null modem adapter to connect the two DB-9s together.

Well my wife says I'm cheap. <_< Thanks for the replies I have a Meridian and a Sporttrak hopefully I'll get this to work.

  2. where di you get this micro log? i have a bunch of strip containers ready to go. I made my first by hand but if there's a form ready i'm willing to save time and make it look more official.

I just print this log out then cut one column out for a altoids tin. There is a micro cache notice on this page also on the right hand side about half way down the page you will see the folowing line.

English (micro) (doc) (132 logs doc)

It's kinda hidden on the page.

  3. I started out using GPX2html and Plucker which isn't a bad way to download caches to your Palm. I just switched to CacheMate it costs seven bucks but it has the features I was looking for like being able to tag caches as found and not found, making notes on my Palm about what I left and took. Now I don't have to carry a small notebook averything is electronic. You can also sort the caches from your current coordinates.

  4. I imported a file form pocket query and sucessfully imported into a registered version of Cachemate but got a message that directions and hints were not downloaded. What's up?

Were all the option checked when you imported the file? I just registered my version and imported two file without any problems. Don't remember the exact options available when you import.

  5. Answering my own question. According to the links page on geocaching.com version 1.2.2 is the latest version. I went directly to EasyGPS.com and downloaded version 1.2.5 and the pocket queries are working. I think it must be an XML formatting issue with version 1.2.2. Maybe the site changed something becasue latley I have also been getting a lot of SQL errors when accessing caches.

  6. Is anyone else having trouble with pocket queries and easygps. I receive my queries in GPX format because I need them for my palm and I like to use watcher. The past couple of times I have had problems with them. I can open them in watcher and see all 300 caches but when I open them in easy gps I only see 35 and that is all it will download to the GPS. I got around this last weekend by converting the GPX file to LOC format using GPSBabel. I am using version 1.2.2 of easygps which has worked fine for months just started to have problems. I also tried to resave the file using watcher which made no difference.

Here is a picture I took of a Northern watersnake the markings and color are very similar to a Copperhead and are sometimes mistaken as one.

  8. I tried a Garmin once. I had it for about three days before returning it. With a question like this you may get a lot of responses like my GPS is better than yours because some people can be very loyal to the brand they use.

The quad helix performs much better in tree cover. I had my Magellan Sportrak Map with me on my first hunt with the Garmin. The Garmin could not hold a satellite at all while the Magellan held a solid lock on 5 or 6 satellites at all times. I was not in heavy tree cover I was on top of a mountain nothing higher than me to block the view, the trees didn't have any leaves because it was winter. I think it was a fair test they were side by side and one unit just didn't perform. I wish now that I had taken a picture of the two side by side so that I could just post the picture when this question comes up. Well in the end I returned the Garmin and bought a Magellan Meridian Platinum and I am very happy with the unit. Whether you by a Magellan or a Garmin I would look for one with the quad helix antenna.

  9. My daughter who is five asks to go caching just about every weekend. She loves finding "treasure" and now she is learning how to use a compass. My son also comes along he just turned three a week and half ago. They both really enjoy being in the woods. I would just try and keep the hikes to a mile or less round trip to start out and fairly easy terrain. One other tip is to slow down, kids don't hike as fast as adults so make sure your not rushed for time it really make it more enjoyable. My daughter needs time to pick flowers along the way and fill her pockets with acorns and all kinds of good stuff she finds along the way. After a while you can work them up to bigger hikes my daughter has done some difficult two to three mile hikes with me without much problem.
