  1. 1 A good, fine tipped, pen

2 AA batteries, in pairs and a marked bag for 'spent' ones.

3 small rite in the rain log for taking notes, TB numbers, and spare sheets of log paper.

4 Tweezers (I have some with a light).

5 swag, each in a ziplock bag ( various sized bags can be good used seperately).

6 hand warmers (winter) sun bloc (summer).

    7 magnet on a string.

    8 telescopic mirror.

    9 pick up claw/grabber

10 A really bright, small, head torch.

So that's my wish list, my actual list consists of the first 6 of those, then a walking stick, TBs, camera, tissues or wipes, some bags for CITO and fruit picking, water, phone, change, sticking plasters in a tin, compass, tape measure, pencil sharpener.

You could probably do a basic version of the cheaper items for around $5 and a full gadget version which would make a great gift.

  2. I've started painting stones with native wildlife. It fits (forest preserve!) and is cheap, and I hope cool enough that people will enjoy finding them. I've done a couple of tiny ones with just designs, which is easy enough to do with a bit of acrylic paint.

Those are nice. Unfortunately I do not have the same artistic ability. People would probably throw something out that I tried to paint.

Other ideas...buy or make a small stamp (the type used for printing) and use it to press into a polymer clay shape with a side hole for some cord. Half bake the clay and then fill in the indentation with a contrasting colour. Bake again.

With '88' in the OP's name, the thing that came to mine was to buy lots of small bouncy balls, and write your caching name, or just 88 on them.

  3. Putting myself in the position of the CO, if someone posts a NM on one of my caches, and it has clearly been muggled, I'd disable the cache. If someone then logged that they found something the next day, before I could check the cache, I would probably allow it, but I would send a polite email to say that some cachers frown on finds on a disabled cache, some COs would delete their log, so if they didn't sign the paper log, it is a good idea to send a mail from the CO's profile page to ask if it is OK to claim the find. That also helps avoid bad blood. I might add that they might want to delete their own log, as some people think that type of find is cheating, but it is up to them. Personally I wouldn't claim a find that way. (But there is no comparison between the finds on our family account and anyone else's. Our smileys are to record our finds, not where we have been, but there are 4 of us.)

There is certainly no comparison between caches. Some of the more difficult ones should probably be more strict about allowing real finds, but there is going to be a lot of variation between COs. I try to follow the way local, more experienced COs allow finds on easy caches in these ways and try to help to keep it a fun activity.

  4. CacheCats are back!

I've ordered a limited run of the Cats and they will be available April 2nd. There's one old favourite and three new ones:

Mellow Cat: Transparent blue on Satin Gold

Majestic Cat: Transparent grey on Antique Nickel

Mighty Cat: Transparent orange on Antique Copper

Modern Cat: Pearl white/black on Black Nickel

All Cats are still $8.00 Canadian.

I can't see any available on that site...Did they get sold out already?

  5. Personally, I've always preferred Marriot hotels when with the kids, especially if sharing a room. The rooms are just a bit bigger, and the breakfasts are fantastic - help yourself to fruit, pastries, cooked breakfast, fresh cooked waffles, etc. The Travelodge hotels we stayed at meant I got no sleep because of traffic noise (and other problems) and the Premier Inns had excellent rooms, but not as good food/service as the Marriots. You do tend to get what you pay for.

Reading some of the comments made smile ... especially this one:

    Cheeky mare!

No, the posh word is "slug-hunting".

Is that a confession of what you're really up to when you say you're just going out for a spot of slug hunting?:laughing:

I'm all for helping the police prevent and solve serious crimes if an obvious way to do so presents itself. Publicising it perhaps isn't ideal, but the police probably don't want criminals hiding illegal firearms where an innocent geocacher could get hurt if they had seen the drop off or pick up.
