  1. I bought my daughter a DOOGEE X5 Pro and it has all the sensors and so on needed for geocaching, and runs the official app fine - no lag. It is plastic, but was like £40. I'm not sure if the model is available now, you may find places, or there may be a newer version with a similar or better spec and the same price. If you provide them with smartphones won't they just use all the other apps and drain your data? At ;east a GPS is a) rugged and limited to geocaching.
  2. For future reference, all the UK reviewers are listed top-right on this page: https://wiki.Groundspeak.com/display/GEO/United+Kingdom
  3. The UK government setup our mapping service as a limited company a while back, so it sells its data rather than giving it for free to tax payers like your own! You can buy their maps at https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/. They do provide free access to a variety of their databases, though. If you can parse the geo data you can build your own maps from it at 10,000 and above 50,000 res, but not at the two useful scales (25k and 50k are what you say you need). But not the raster imagery. Bing provide access to OS maps, so if you have a free Bing developer account you can download a certain number of tiles a day for free. Of course, Openstreetmap provides all this for free, and has much the same level of info (including contour info on the cycle overlay).Info on downloading map data is here: https://planet.openstreetmap.org/. Doesn't have the same look, though! Ant

  8. It's a nice additional feature but looks like it's buggy - An event GC797P1 is 39km from me but doesn't show up on Aug 21 (in fact I get no events on that day so I don't even see the '21'). The event does show up if I click the 'search events' link below, but of course that 'search events' link only shows up if I click on a different date - when I click where '21' should be, the 'search events' link disappears! if the browser window is narrower than about 1190 pixels, the events applet magically pops to the left and far bottom of the screen - way way down below all the log activity. Doubt many people will ever find it there… Have you thought about setting up a Beta Testers group and having loads of us from around the world all test out your new features for a week or two before general release?
  9. It's such a shame to lose these well enjoyed geocaches. Some of my YOSM finds have been very enjoyable and were a challenge to find, fantastic locations and views. I will miss checking if a trig point I pass could be logged as a find. Thanks to outforthehunt for maintaining these caches and responding promptly to our finds for 15 years. RIP YOSM's.
  10. I agree with this idea. Coupled with the friends list, to make the feature managable, would also add some value to the friends feature. But would it be a single or multi-select list? I guess single would work on Garmins, Satmaps where you can show multiple PQs, but wouldn't work on Android where you can only see one PQ at a time.
  11. I also have for a long time wanted 'nano' - but the data structure of the XML schema would need to be changed. The longer we leave it, the harder it will be to do it!
  12. The guidelines refer to the forces that create the landscape, that does not require them to be geological, mand-made forces should be legit. But I agree you would need to work extra-hard to make it educational. Maybe see if someone has done any earthcaches in Holland, plenty of man-made forces affected the landscape there!
  13. The Mega 2013 Photo Competition is officially open but only runs until the end of April. In order to produce a calendar we are running a competition to find some good pictures to use, representing each month of the year. The competition is open to all members of the Geocaching community and any photo – old or new – can be used. Although hosted on the West Mids forum there is no need to be a registered forum member to take part as this has been set up so that it can be accessed without logging in. The URL is: http://www.wmcaching.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=75 Each entry costs 50p and multiple entries are allowed per person. To see the current entries visit http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29076313/PhotoComp/index.html
  14. Me too - it worked in fits and starts and now seems to have fallen over completely.
  15. I also find it very very slow to startup - 10-15 seconds (DTC Desire, Moto Defy). And if I 'home' to multi-task and then go back to the app it still takes the same amount of time to load, instead of just bringing the app to the fore.
  16. Just a note - The other grey icons problem has been fixed - and I don't get this problem with my PQs!
  17. Well, I have a Groundspeak Travel Bug that I lost the code for, this was going to be perfect! BUT The new facility failed - it said it the "Trackable manufacture" (btw typo there - should say "The trackable's manufacturer") had requested I use their website instead, then it sent me to Oak geocoins - completely unrelated company to my TB tag. @GS lackeys - Get in touch with me through some trustable email addr if you'd like more details of this to help debug it...
  18. Thank you, Mars. We also found that bug and are fixing now. this seems to be fixed now. Agreed - fixed for me too. Cheers
  19. Looks fine to me (using firefox) Mark Hmm - I have a screenshot if anyone's interested - it all looked and worked fine last night. I only noticed because my nearest two caches have been disabled for months now, I thought they'd both magically come back from the dead (no such luck) Ant (Firefox 3.6.10 :-)
  20. On the map, disabled caches no longer appear grey. Also they are no longer crossed out on the cache list on the right - only when you click on the cache icon on the map. PLEASE revert to the cache icon visually showing disabled caches, or allow me to deselect them as with finds/owned. (using firefox)
