  1. Did you try to open it in notepad or similar? Wondering what data it contains. Could try closing all software and deleting it using DOS.
  2. For sale is my Garmin Oregon 200. Minimal, adult use for 10 days. Only went out to two caches...it's still cold here. Always had screen protector installed. It's a fine unit, I just picked up a 400T for the extra features. - Updated to latest firmware (2.86). - 2GB card - Mapsource City Navigator North America NT 2009 updated maps installed on card. Routable. Did not install Mexico maps. Maps use appx 1GB on the card. - Caribiner clip. Had to buy separately. - Lanyard - USB cable - Extra screen protector - Original box and documentation. My feedback elsewhere is excellent: RCGroups Ebay $275 shipped CONUS. Paypal , MO, CC. Thanks, Matt
  3. Picked up a NIB Oregon 400t for $429 shipped on Ebay. Colorados seem to run cheaper. You should be able to get a good deal.
  4. For PC: - unzip the pocket query - plug oregon into computer, want mass storage mode - copy both gpx files to your oregon, put in the GPX directory - disconnect gps from computer - fire up the oregon. geocaches and related waypoints should be available I would imagine the Mac process is similar. Hope this helps. Matt
  5. I've been using Sanyo 2700 AA nimh. They're great. I've never had off-brand rechargeables deliver the rated capacity. Worth the extra buck or two for known quality cells. Matt
  6. God bless and God speed in your return home. Thanks! Matt
  7. Not that it will help while in the field but I used the cig lighter power adapter for the Oregon yesterday. First time using it. Sure brightens the backlight intensity.
  8. You might want to check out the Build you own GPSr cartridge. The author should have included averaging in it. Perhaps you can contribute features to this project? As far as I'm aware, you won't be able to do I/O though the Wherigo Player at the moment and certainly not on the Garmin units. While it's possible for third party Players to add I/O features, I'm less than optimistic concerning the Garmin Players. I did download that cartridge but have yet to run it. Maybe I'll still make my own cartridge that will average a position. If user is set up over a point with precise coordinates (benchmark, township corner, etc.) would easily be able to compute the averaged coords approximate error and display that value as well. I shudder when thinking about having to write coords down on paper though. It still makes Hulk mad that I can't output a simple ASCII file. The thing I don't understand is why Garmin didn't include this feature to begin with. It's not a complicated process to do the averaging. Matt
  9. Taking a break Group ride New black pipes! Come on springtime! Love riding my M50 and can't wait to combine geocaching with riding this year. Best riding story last season: was riding from home (Cleveland, OH) to Toledo, OH to visit family. Trip is about 140 miles. Left early in the morning...riding early is great. Wind was pretty high on this day and it proved to be fortunate for me. Saw three bald eagles, not all at once. Since the wind was blowing hard they were 'kiting' over the highway. Gave a great vantage point to appreciate the beauty. I'm a big raptor fan and consider seeing any raptors large or small a good omen. Stay safe...ATGATT! Matt
  10. Was thinking of making a waypoint averaging cartridge. Would average coords for user selected length of time then write the waypoint coords in a GPX file. Figured it would be a nice first project to work on to get familiar with the language and Oregon specifics....but if there's no i/o my project has been vaporized. Matt
  11. Can I make Wherigo create/save a file (Garmin Oregon) on the unit? Thanks.
  12. Asked these questions at Garmin and got no substantial responses. Didn't answer the MIN and MAX voltage questions. Did tell me that the auto adapter does have a voltage reducer. So if anybody can answer #1 that would be great. Also, since there were no answers forthcoming about the output voltage of the auto adapter, an answer to that would be appreciated also. Matt
  13. Hopefully I can help. 2. With Topo 2008 loaded on to a 200 does the 3-D view work (using DEM I believe it's called)? Does it look as good as the 400T, or the 300 loaded with Topo 2008? Will work the same. This is a useless feature that may look cool to some. 3. Is there shaded relief of terrain using the 2-D looking-straight-down-from-above view on the 200 (standard map view)? If you have topo (DEM) data loaded, yes. The 200 doesn't come with base DEM data. 4. For the gps compass (non electric compass that it doesn't have), how much do I need to be moving for it to give me a compass reading? Is walking 5-10 feet (2-4 steps) enough to get a useful reading? Is walking a fast enough rate of movement to get quick and useful readings? I understand the advantage of the electric compass is it works when you aren't moving, but if the gps compass works by just moving a short distance on foot then it's probably adequate. (I realize this has been covered a lot and people have differing opinions) I've found that while walking slowly the 200 compass to be herky-jerky. 5. Even though there is no altimeter on the 200, does it have the "Elevation Plot" page using the gps readings (instead of altimeter readings)? If not, is there a way to review a track/route's elevation changes over time/distance (like the track profile, or vertical profile of routes on the 60csx)? The 200 does have elevation plot, uses gps elevations. As you can imagine, it fluctuates wildly. 6. Using the altimeter as a barometer to predict the weather. Has anyone done this? Does it work well? Seems like it could be neat and fun if it worked. I'm sure you know that the 200 doesn't have altimeter/barometer. Predicting weather using barometric pressure is simple. While stationary, if pressure is dropping expect poorer weather. If pressure is rising expect better weather. This is one reason I chose the 200...don't need altimeter/barometer. 7. For the sun/moon page, does it give the location of the sun/moon in the sky, or where it will rise on the horizon the way the 60csx does (like the "Celestial Information" window in Mapsource)? Does the 200 do the "animate moon phases" like the 60csx? Answered above. Matt
  14. I work with digital aerial photography and mapping for a living. From those screencaps you show it looks like there could be a coordinate system issue between the two units. I see your point about the Oregon being more herky-jerky but the whole track looks to be displaced to the north. Is the displacement consistent between your comparisons? I just got my Oregon today so it will be a while before I'll get to QC data. Matt
  15. Keep in mind that these are recreational grade GPS devices. Survey grade equipment is much better...and much more expensive.
  16. That's pretty cool and your dog looks like my old dog, G.Shepard/Husky mix...may he rest in peace. Yours doesn't happen to have one blue eye and one brown, does he? Man, I'm tearing up, miss the old boy a lot!
  17. I'm mounting the Oregon200 on my motorcycle. Will buy the 'official' cigarette-adapter plug to power the unit from the bike's battery. Plan on hacking off the lighter adapter, adding a fuse and my own connectors for easy plug/unplug near the bike's battery. Worked well for my GPSIII+ so I don't foresee any problems with this one. Just a couple of concerns/questions. > Anybody know the MIN and MAX voltage allowed from external power source for the Oregon? Not listed in the manual like it is for other models. > Is there a voltage regulator in the cigarette-adapter plug? If so, I'll need to keep the regulator in the chain so as to not fry the Oregon. Any other relevant info or ideas appreciated! This is what I have hooked to the battery. It extends to just below my fuel tank. You can see the fuse holder and the connector. I have a mating connector lead that I plan on putting on the hacked cigarette-adapter so I can plug into it. The pictured lead allows me to plug in a battery tender for battery maintenance during the winter months also. Thanks, Matt
  18. Personally, I never liked it and so disabled it. Still, why reduce features on a product...and it's such a simple thing. Matt
  19. Thanks for the quick response. Maybe it's something they can do eventually with an update. I sure like having that ability...versatility is king.
  20. Is there a way to change the screen orientation? My GPSIII+ does this and it's a great feature. Makes a big difference when using the GPS while riding a motorcycle or driving a car. Allows user to see more of the cross roads away from the currently navigated road. My Oregon should be showing up today! Happy happy, joy joy. Here's my best 'artist rendition' of the orientation question in case my description wasn't clear: ____________ ||||||||||||||||| ||||||||||||||||| ||||||||||||||||| instead of _____ |||||||| |||||||| |||||||| |||||||| |||||||| Tks, Matt
