  1. Amen to that . There's nothing I hate more than going to an area and seeing geodamage everywhere from cachers who are more intent in finding the cache than they are in preserving nature . I went after one cache a few months back that stated right in the description that it WASN'T HIDDEN IN THE FERNS. Yet every fern with a 50' radius of GZ was completely trampled . I emailled the CO expressing my concerns and didn't receive a reply back . The cache is still active and the damage still being done . The irony in the whole thing is the CO placed the cache to bring others to an area that was special to her / him in their younger years. Now by leaving the cache active , the CO is helping to insure the area gets destroyed by over anxious cachers
  2. I had this same problem on my Venture HC . You need to go to the FIND GEOCACHE section.....hit the left side menu button and change the point of reference to the area you are uploading the caches for . This will bring up the caches that show as being saved yet don't appear
  3. I don't have any issues with " disabled" caches because as many have said there could be underlying issues we don't know about . What I do have an issue with is CO's who don't / won't maintain their caches despite numerous logs stating caches need maintenance / log book is full / cache is wet . We have a cacher in the city I live in whom we have put on our " do not do these caches " list . They are always damp and 90% of them are hidden in garbage ridden areas . Definitely a cacher who hides purely for the " numbers " as opposed to bringing fellows cachers to a place of importance / view . Before someone tells me to quit complaining and practice CITO ..... I would need a city garbage truck to clean up his areas . Easier just to put him on the " list " and move on to the caches with CO's that care .
  4. Go ahead , Chewy . You have twice the amount of hides I do . I'll muggle yours and turn them all into puzzles caches and send the descriptions to you ( all mixed up of course ) so you can TRY and recover your caches Someone mentioned the cacher being possibly new . The cacher in question is not new and like I stated...she has a habit of doing this for her finds . So the forgotten pen doesn't fly with me . As for offending a cacher by deleting their spoiler pics ...not the least bit concerned about it . If it turns her off searching for anymore of my caches it wouldn't cause me to miss any sleep. The integrity of my cache for future cachers to find is more important than a few hurt feelings . And maybe it'll wake her up so she doesn't do it to anyone else .
  5. I had a cacher find 2 of my hides today and on both counts stated they forgot to sign the log . I know the golden rule is no signature = no find . But I was willing to let both go . Until the cacher posted a picture of my micro ( rated 3 difficulty ) in it's exact hiding spot . I've had many logs stating it's a tricky hide and in my opinion the cachers pic compromised the whole cache . So I deleted the log to get rid of the picture . I emailled the cacher telling her I deleted the log and she could repost the find MINUS the picture . Thing is this cacher has a bad habit of posting pictures that compromise hides . In my opinion....any spoilers should be done by the CO.....not the cachers doing the finds . And I'm curious...how does one forget to sign logs on 2 caches that are just over 500 feet apart ? Opinions please
  6. LMAOO. I'm so guilty of this . I've got 2 hide just down the street from my house and when they got published I waited outside for cachers to show up for the FTF ....then talked to them after they made the find . My wife calls me a stalker
  7. I came across a cache like this today . The hint said Don’t trample the ferns as you spy under there. There must have been close to 50 ferns surrounding GZ..which was never really known as my GPSr zeroed out in 5 different spots distancing roughly 75 ' apart . And the ferns looked like as herd of elephants had been through there . The cache was found hiding under a log and a piece of bark The irony in this is the cache is part of a series that centers around locations that were special to the CO in their childhood . If that's the case and you were the CO , would you not do your best to insure the area took as little damage as possible by cachers by supplying a hint that was USEFULL rather than complete BS ??? My log on this cache reflected my disgust and in a round about way suggested that if the CO truly cared about the area then the cache should be moved to stop the damage or archived
  8. Answer me this ....if you went to a cache and saw 3 hypo needles in the 2 minutes you were there , had no gloves with you ( not that that would matter in this case ) would you stick around to do a little CITO ? Caching is a family recreation and knowing that some family could bring their kids to this location just makes me shake my head . Would you bring yours ?? And I agree the problem is not just the CO whom chose to hide in this area....it's the surrounding neighbours who choose to live next to a "garbage dump" by throwing the trash there . With that said , I'm now going to log this particular cache as a DNF and mention the hypos I saw there . The CO might not like it but then maybe next time they will choose a more suitable location rather than just hiding one more LPC .
  9. I did a cache recently that was rated a 1 /1 . From the parking area you had to walk through long grassy field for around 1000' , then up and over some rocky terrain which brought you to a steep rocky slope that lead to the beach . The cache was hidden about 20' down the slope and I had to use hand holds to get down to the cache and then keep my balance while retreiving / signing / replacing the cache . Last I checked a terrain rating of 1 is wheelchair accessible . factor in the rocks I had to climb over and the steep bank I had to climb down and the terrain rating is more like a 2.5 minimum . I checked the CO's profile when I got home and they have 0 finds and 1 hide which they hid almost a year ago . Everything became clear then as to why the low rating .
  10. Not sure what that stands for . Can someone clue me in please LPC = Lamp Post Cache = Skirt Lifter. If you don't get that yet, you will, soon enough. Ok . I know exactly what you mean . Thanks muchly
  11. Not sure what that stands for . Can someone clue me in please
  12. Well said . If no one's around I'll follow my GPS like it's leading me to Hugh Hefner's mansion but if muggles are about I'll hold it so it's not so obvious . In some areas / hides where muggles are everywhere then you either choose to come back later or just go for it . Most I'll come back too but there's been a few that I've DNF'd a few times and if it's my 3rd time back and there's people around we I'll just do my best to search for the cache ....and if I appear a little crazy to them then so be it ....maybe they'll leave and then I can really start searching
  13. When searching for a cache ? My wife and I were out caching last night and we came to one cache site that had us stunned . The amount of garbage around was sickening and we spent maybe 2 minutes half heartedly looking for the cache before we became to disgusted and left . Too say this area needs a CITO is an understatement because it would take truckloads to remove all the garbage . What puzzles me is why would someone hide a cache amongst all the garbage ? Is there no respect for the cachers that will come to this area to search ? I wanted to make a note in the log commenting about it but decided to let it slide as no other logs commented on it . And it's not all new because the site reeks like a garbage dump....and this is an inner city cache in a small wooded area . I just recently hid my first cache the other day ( waiting on publication ) and I hid it where others would enjoy the surrounding environment and not have to sift through garbage during their search . Personally , I'd rather find one cache in a nice area I didn't know existed than find 10 in areas where it's obvious the CO only hid it there to increase their hide numbers . Is a little respect for fellow cachers to much to show ? Opinions ?
  14. Not sure if this is in another topic already and if it is , my apologies in advance . Is there a way to search geocaching.com and come up with the most recent hidden caches in the area / city that you live in ? I'm still chasing my FTF and also have a few TB's I'd like to drop in newer caches. Tim
  15. Checked the logs on most of the ones left and they come up as DNF's . Have you been there yourself to make sure the caches are still there . Was interested in adopting a few but not if they are dead ends
  16. thanks for the replies Starbrand I've read it a few times now that there comes a time when you need to put GPS away and let your geosenses kick in . Problem is I'm still too green to caching to have developed those senses Although I've started to see the beaten path where previous cachers have led the way and it's help me find ground zero a few times . I'll take the advice and let my GPS lead me to the proximity...and when it starts telling me to bear left..now right...left again....I'll put it away and start developing the geosense
  17. Kudos to you for stating the obvious As a "new " cacher , I can tell you that my favorite find so far was hidden by a 9 year old . It was well thought out , the description was outstanding and the location of the cache was easily accessible ...yet the hiding spot took some good searching to come across . Whereas another cache hidden by an " experienced " cacher had me regretting the fact that I forgot to bring my repelling equipment and hoping that S&R would find us before the growlies did . Yes ...a slight exageration ....but my point is the description on this cache mentioned nothing about the surrounding terrain it was actually in . I don't think hiding caches should be limited to a issue of finding so many first....as much as it should to following the caching guidelines and above all...using COMMON SENSE
  18. Are those online stores or actual walk - in businesses in the lower mainland ?
  19. Greetings everyone Been caching for almost a month now and have had 8 successes and a few DNF's . I'm using my Blackberry 8130 and the Geocache Navigator application. Few questions and any help would be muchly appreciated . 1) I find with my blackberry that the GPS seems to bounce quite a bit and at times the compass spins like I'm in the Bermuda triangle . Makes it a little tuff to find ground zero without running in circles a few times . Is this the norm for GPS...and if I were to purchase an actual GPS handheld would the accuracy be a little more stable than what I'm getting? Is it worth it to purchase a better model and leave my blackberry for making phone calls? 2) I'm wanting to hide a cache of my own but can't figure out how to do it using GN as it doesn't show my location in LAT / LONG . Are there any GN users who know if this is a possibility...and if so , can you point me in the right direction . Thanks muchly
