  1. Ive had two Garmin devices over the last ten years. The first one was a GPSMAP and the lastest was an Oregon 550. Both have failed the same way. (see attached photos of the Oregon) The rubber on/off button perished and eventually fell to bits exposing the microswitch inside. Ive not had it outside since I realised how exposed the electronics were and ive just sent an email to garmin asking if its fixable. Are there any decent alternatives to Garmin devices? I know they have a good name, but I just want to know what else people have used and not had any problems with.
  2. So, im returning after a couple of years. I have an Oregon 550 and I can remember uploading cache details individually by clicking on an 'UPLOAD TO DEVICE' button. That button seems to have gone and all I have now is a DOWNLOAD GPX option. Do i just save them all to my PC and then drag them into the device folder where all my old GPX files still sit? Regards Jon
  3. Can I buy a MemoryMap package and send the map to my Oregon 550? I have a 1:25k MemoryMap of Scotland, which I dont think I will ever use, but dont really want to buy a South West one if I cant use it. Is it easy to transfer maps onto the SD card? I cant seem to work out how to do it or what format the map needs to be in. Many thanks Jon
  4. I had the same issue with an Oregon 450 IE seems not to like it, so I had a try with FireFox and that worked fine, but I had to actually visit the GC page to upload to device, it wouldnt let me uplaod from the little box that pops up on the main map. Then I tried it again yesterday and now it does. Computers can do odd things at times GRRRRRRRR.
  5. Ive invested in an Oregon 550 and have used it a few times. Quite impressed, but it would be nice to get a map on it so I can see whats around me. Ive had a look at the information that came with it, but its not really that clear as to what maps I can use or how to get them onto the device. I can see the micro SD slot and know how to transfer stuff onto cards, but before I go out and spend some more money on a digital map I would like to know what I can and cant use. I like the look of the memory map software and the custom map packs you can download by the square km. Is this going to work on my Oregon or should I look elsewhere? Thanks in advance Jon
  6. so, it looks like i can upload to my oregon through the individual GC page, but not from the little window that pops up on the map.

  8. Hi I am using the latest version of Firefox and Win 7 I downloaded some GCs yesterday but today I get the 'The plug-in was not unlocked successfully' message when i click on the 'SEND TO GPS' option on the CG map. I've installed the Garmin communicator and the plug in and on the Garmin page it says Communicator Plugin is properly installed and up to date. Version: 4.0.4.0. Garmin GPS device is detected and communicating properly: GPS60 (Unit ID 3501100426) Why wont it let me send to GPS? I have tried rebooting and disabling and re-enabling the plugin Thanks in advance for any help.
  9. Hi all. I was just wondering what the guidelines are in the following situation: I wanted to place a cache in a certain area. I have already found a good hiding place and theres no problems because its on access land. I know there is a guideline with locating caches close to others (i think its 150m, but I might be wrong). I have just spotted a puzzle cache just down the road from me which seems to have the actual cache hidden about 5 meters from the location I have in mind. So does the 150m guideline mean 150m from the cache site or the clue icon on the website map. If I had not stumbled across and done the other puzzler then I would never had known. Regards Jon
  10. The area I want to place my caches in is not covered in the blanket agreement list. So i've sent off a request to the South West office asking for permission. I then read into the other agreements that you then needed to submit individual coordinates to the FC representative for aproval or refusal. Sounds like common sense to me because I know the land I want to place in has some quite sensitive ruins in them. If I get an agreement back from the SW office, should I forward it onto GAGB so they can add it to their list?
  11. Has anyone hid a cache on Forestry Commission land? Do I need permission in the same way as NT land? I cant find anything on their website. Thanks in advance for any guidance, help or suggestions
  12. I;ve just started dipping a personal coin and last night I sat down and deleted about two dozen logs. Now I know theres a distance issue at the moment ad it appears Groundspeak are looking into it, but will my distance still be recorded after I delete the drop and retrieve logs?
  13. Hi and sorry if this sounds like a daft question, but i'm a geocoin newbie. I put two coins out and they have been picked up and moved to anothe cache. I have checked their logs and it shows a deffinate pick up and drop off. But there is no distance travelled next to the trackable item history and in my profile on the trackables tab they are both showing as 0km. Have i done something wrok when i set them up? ive looked around at loads more coins and they all have distances, but mine dont. thanks in advance for any help or suggestions
  14. Hid three today and am having trouble listing them. All on Dartmoor and I took the coordinate when I hid them. Now i'm back on the hide and seek section and I can't work out how to input the coordinate. GPS said SX 57869 67012 but website has not got this option to accept that format. Is there a way of converting from the British Grid system to Decimal Degrees???
  15. Whats the WGS84 datum and what exactly do you mean when you say I should be using them? Regards Jon
  16. Hid three geocaches today and made notes on location. I'm in the UK and using a GPS60 set to BRITISH GRID Coordinates are SX 57869 67012 (a location on Dartmoor in SW England) for the first one ive tried to register. Not sure what system of coords I need to register with because the first one I tried came up in Canada when I viewed the map and the other one I tried came up on one of the Scottish Isles. Am I doing something stupid? And i've submitted it already, so will the reviewer spot i've been a muppet and not release it to the general public? PLEASE HELP!
