  1. IMHO, I think the 550 is going to be the best all around GPSr offered by any company for a while. The Magellan Triton is close, but not enough. Delorme's PN-40 is okay, but buggy - and no camera. I currently use a 60CSx and a PN-40. Guess which one is currently in the shop for repairs? Come July. the 550 is going to get a hard look as my next GPSr. 3.2 megapixels is perfect for the camera and 5x7 prints.
  2. The difference between CURRENT versions is that City Navigator has more precise routing information in the map data than City Select. For instance, Navigator may contain speed limit data which would help it produce a more accurate route based on fastest time computations. I'm not sure if this is an exactly true example of the difference, but the difference in Navigator as explained is the general type of difference in the routing data. So there is a bit of a subtle difference in the actual data. I don't think so as someone above mentioned that they're using Navigator 7. True, I am using verion 4 of MetroGuide (updated to 6.11). That could indeed be an issue with 'X' units. I'm also using the same version of MetroGuide on C and CS units just fine. I plan I buying CN or CS soon anyhow, so it could be a moot point. Still would like to hear others chime in though.
  3. I too live in Ohio, and Ohio is the only detail maps I have loaded (about the limit of the stock 64 mb card). I don't get the Region field (as it shows in the manual). I get Number, Street and City. It doesn't matter which order I choose, I still get the same result. My parents live 100 miles north of me, and when I enter their Number then Street all goes well. When I type the first letter of their town (in Ohio), the City list goes blank and is replaced with Not Found. (BTW: I did a hard reset and reloaded the FW/SW).
  4. Sounds like EXACTLY the problem I'm having... What version of City Nav do you have? Actually, I'm using an older version of MetroGuide that supports (undocumented) GPSr auto-routing. Regardless, I don't think it's MapSource related. My friend's 60CS, which has the same MetroGuide maps as I, functions correctly in this regard, as does my old eTrex Vista. I think it's 60CSx specific. (Not sure about the 76CSx). Let's keep this topic afloat for a week or two and see if others are having the same issue. Then maybe a call to Garmin is in order.
  5. My CSx exhibits the same behavior. When I use the Find Address feature, I can enter the street number and street name, but when I enter the first letter of the City Name, the list disappears and I get None Found. The owner’s manual is somewhat ambiguous regarding this. On page 23 of the CSx manual it states: “You do not have to specify a city in the <Enter City>, as the database has information for the entire region. However, you can select a city if you want to reduce the number of address matches.” Notice the difference in wording: you do not have to specify versus you can select. Well yes, I can select a city, but I am unable to specify a city.
  6. I figured as much. I was wondering why my C & CS units can pick up 48 and 51, yet my CSx can not (SiRFIII?). Where can I find current WAAS status? Google doesn't seem to be of much help (2+ year old documents and no real-time data). From where did you get your information that 48 and 51 are in test mode?
  7. Great! I wasn't trying to start a WAAS war. Let alone spin-off threads. All I was asking is if the SiRFIII might explain why I couldn't get 48 and 51 on a CSx, yet my C and CS could. On another thread, Garmin and others even responded that the system isn't fully operational yet. That's good enough for me until October.
  8. Read the Confidentiality Note again. It says, "If you are NOT the intended recipient..." However, you ARE the intended recipient, so I think it's ok for you to share what they said. You don't need to cut and paste the e-mail. Can you please give us the gist of what they said? Thanks.
  9. One thing I still haven't been able to convince my friends of yet is to do a hard reset of their C and CS units to download the latest almanacs. They're convinced that they're receiving "valid" WAAS data, when in fact they may not - even though they show accuracies of 6 - 7 feet. I understand that WAAS is pretty much an FAA project, not meant for ground units, much less handhelds, but I'll take every little bit I can get. I'd still like to hear about other folks' experience though.
  10. I’m aware that the system is not yet fully operational, but I’m curious about some observations I made over the last couple of weeks with a Garmin GPSMAP 60C, 60CS and a 60CSx (only the CSx is mine ). From my location (central Ohio), the order of visibility is 51, 48,35 & 33. The 60C and 60CS lock onto 51 and 48 with no problem. When I shield the two units from the southwest sky (51, 48,35), and expose them to the low southeast horizon, they lock onto 33; as I expect they should. The 60CSx on the other hand, won’t even flash a bar for 51 or 48. It doesn’t even see them. It will occasionally, briefly show 35, but never locks on. It’ll always capture 33 when it has a clear view. I’ve read that some of these satellites broadcast a flag that essentially says, “Don’t use me”. I’ve also read some GPSr units honor this flag, and some don’t. The ones that honor the flag will ignore the satellites, while those GPSr unit that don’t honor the flag will attempt to download the almanac. I’m wondering if the SiRFstarIII/firmware in the CSx possibly explains this. It’s no big deal (until October or November maybe). I'm just wondering anyone else has experienced anything similar. My research continues, but I thought I’d ask here too.
  11. I ended up getting a Gilsson case for $9, but that does look like an interesting case. I might have to check one of those out. Any reception problems with the antenna covered up? (I have a 60CSx, which would probably be less of an issue.)
  12. I chose the 60CSx for the following reasons: Button placement - I want to see the screen when I'm pushing buttons; not the top of my thumb. Price - I can purchase a 128 meg card for less than the price difference between the 60 and 76. Flotation (or lack of) - If I'm that careless around water where my dumb a** drops the GPSr, then maybe I deserve to lose it. In my 45+ years on this earth I've managed to keep my wallet, keys and cellular phone dry, unless it was in my pocket when I went in!
  13. My 60CSx also has factory foam pads integrated with the battery contacts. Wonder which revision this was done? Mine came with 2.60/2.40 firmware/software.
  14. No problems here with 2.90. Maps still there and WP's clickable.
  15. My friend has used her Blackberry 7100i with Trimble Outdoors a couple of times, but found it awkward. She finally bought a 60Cs.
  16. I'm running Windows x64, and while it recognizes my 60CSx in mass-storage mode, it won't in regular (for lack of a better term) mode for use with Mapsource, GSAK, etc. I've installed the latest USB drivers from Garmin, but x64 won't recognize them. Has anyone else run into this? It's not a big deal, as I run 32-bit XP on my laptop. I'll fire off an e-mail to Garmin and ask them too.
  17. Power sources and voltages are in the owner's manual. USB voltage spec. is 4.75V-5.25V, 5V nom. From the range of power sources and voltages listed in the manual, the unit probably has onboard voltage regulation. The USB port on your PC is 5V, so a 5V cigarette lighter adaptor should work just fine.
  18. Excluding the SD card, does anyone know how much internal memory the GPSMAP 60CSx has? I can't seem to find out via web search.
  19. Metal dust mixed in with the plastic for EMI shielding?
  20. I like my 60CSx just fine. Best handheld GPSr I've owned to date (and I've owned more then a few). Some folks here make it sound like they were "forced" to buy a product they don't like, and somehow it's Garmin's fault that they didn't do their homework. For crying out loud, Ebay it if you're so dissatisfied.
