  1. I've had a quick look at project-gc, and just in time too, they suspended it for maintenance about 5 mins after I got there.

However, I won't be using it for now, because it seems that it doesn't like the fact that I have an ad blocker installed - I haven't, as it happens, but my web browser has, that's why I use that particular one, I like my screen to be cluttered up with what I choose to look at, not other peoples junk.

Also, it seems that it's tied up with "Facebook", which I definitely don't use!

If my need to get the information gets greater, then I'll contact the big cheeses at HQ.

  2. I hope that this is in the correct place, my apologies if not.

If a user makes alterations to one of their previous log entries, or deletes a former entry entirely, (if deletions are possible), does a record exist of those actions, and/or is the original entry, or entries, still viewable, albeit by a moderator/administrator?

  3. Good Morning all,

I have just set a Travel Tag off, with the goal of visiting a cache in each of the 14 UK areas listed on every TB page under the "State or Province" section.

Can anybody tell me why Northern Ireland is not listed?

As far as I am aware, [just looked it up on Wikipedia, so it could be wrong, of course!], but it is part of the UK, strictly, it is a Province, so is eminently suited for the list?

  4. I have eight travel tags to set off on their individual journeys.

One of them was to be used as a "personal tag", just to see how far I had travelled, whilst dropping off the other seven tags, in various parts of Staffordshire.

Having clocked up 34 miles, I've got fed up with that idea - I seem to be able to delete the seven log entries it has, or rather, it appears to have archived them, is there a way of resetting the mileage to zero, please?

  5. It's on the login page of "Geocaching.com"

If you click on the white panel at the left side of page, your username drops down, and you click on it, and it moves into the white panel.

On my screen, I have bmwman, and below it, protea72; but although the second name can be moved into the white panel, there is no valid password for it - the password that it has stored was the wrong one, so is invalid; I assume that if protea72 can be erased, then the, [incorrect], password will never appear again, because that username will never be used again.

  6. I hope this is in the right place.

Because the lady with whom I geocache is disabled, I usually examine the cache, whilst she normally gets as close as she can - she sometimes sits in the car, and I retrieve the log, and take it to the car, if it's nearby.

[Probably all "against the rules", but that's life for some of us, I'm also slightly disabled nowadays, and I'm the lady's carer]

We recently came back to 'caching after a five year lay-off, and we couldn't remember her login details - we have them now, thank you.

Whilst thrashing around trying to work out what her login name was, I put a name into my pc which turned out to be surprisingly close, but we still couldn't match it to what we thought was her password, of course.

That name is on my PC together with my own login, [which works fine], and I cannot get rid of it - I cannot even get in to that [fictitious] account because we never found a matching pass word, there isn't one, of course.

Any bright ideas how to get rid of it, please?

  7. Until a couple of years ago, I used to Geocache with another disabled friend, I used to photograph the cache for her, if she couldn't manage to reach the target area.

Eventually, our E-trex, the most user unfriendly piece of equipment that I've ever encountered, finally gave up the ghost.

For a couple of months, we carried on with another, borrowed, E-trex, but inputting data using those rubber buttons, became too much for us, and we stopped.

One month ago, I purchased an Ipad mini, and yesterday discovered the "Groundspeak" app - wonderful!

I intend to "do" my first "Ipad-cache" this morning, but may I ask a question, please?

My caching pastime was free previously, when were payments introduced?

  8. Garmin have the most amazing customer service, and have been known to replace units that are years old with new or reconditioned ones for no cost at all.

If you ever have a problem again, ask on here, cos those that have had problems will tell you the best way to get in touch with Garmin!

Thanks Hazel, if I have problems with another Garmin product, [and I would buy their products in future], then I'll bear your advice in mind.

I'm sure that Garmin have a good service record, but the correct way to get service under guarantee is to return it to the supplier, not to the maker - and that's what I did.

  9. When I startede Geocaching in Jan 2009, I bought an Etrex from Tesco.

They were on offer at a much reduced price, about £49, I think.

Recently, mine stopped working, it simply wouldn't switch on, so I consulted Tesco, because that's where it came from.

I've no complaints about Tesco, they were quite prepared to take it back, they were even going to collect it!

Trouble is, they are not in a position to repair it, and they don't stock them now, so they could only give me a refund - this meant that unless I could find somebody else selling them aqt reduced price, I would have to pay full price for a replacement.

In my case, I decided to hang on to it, and repair it myself - it ruins the warranty, I know, but in my case I managed to fix it.

They say that you get what you pay for......

  10. You don't need to be a Premium Member to send stuff to GPS.

I have Basic Membership, and it works OK for me.

However, it only works on my PC that is fitted with Firefox, and I had to install the Garmin plug-in, eight times before it worked!

My Toshiba laptop has had the plug-in thrown at it 23 times now, and my Acer 15 times, and I can't use them to download yet.

I met another Geo-cacher on a Canal towpath last week and he said that it's a problem with the Garmin software.

The description he used was one word, four letters, commencing with "C", and ending with "P".

Seems it's a common problem, perhaps Garmin should attend to it?

  11. It downloaded OK, but the PC cannot install it; it was tried on 3 PC's, all with WinXP [service pack 3], two running IE, and one running Firefox, and with no other applications running .

Also, does the cache ID number, ie GC1F4RK, mean anything to the GPS, I mean, can I download this into the GPS instead?

I have a Venture HC as well, not very sure what problem you're encountering, but I downloaded whatever was latest when I bought the unit from Garmin's website instead of installing from the CD.

First, you need to install the drivers. After that you can install the "Send to GPS" plug-in.

I had to re-install the drivers twice before it would work. Follow whatever instructions are on the screen. When everything's complete, remove the cable and turn off the GPS.

After that, plug in the USB cable , then turn on the Venture HC. There should be two beeps (low high) indicating Windows recognized the hardware. You should be able to send coordinates directly to the Venture HC now using "Send to GPS"

I'm not sure what you mean by the cache ID - the GCxxxx alone doesn't mean anything. That's just a waypoint name, the actual waypoint are the coordinates.

If I'm not answering your questions, I apologize - please let me know what I should elaborate on.

OK Chrysalides, you are answering my questions correctly, I think.

You've certainly confirmed that the GC number is not anything to do with navigation - knowing that there are various forms of coordinates - eg OS grid ref, I wondered if they were something that the GPS recognised.

You've also confirmed that I'm doing things right with the download/install, and that I may have to repeat it until it goes in.

    I'll try again.

    Thanks very much!

    Got it!

Came home from work at 2pm and had another go.

It was stubborn, but I was more stubborn than it was - it installed on the eighth attempt!

Thanks for your help - trouble is, it's raining now, so I can't go out and try it until tomorrow!

  13. I acquired a Garmin Venture HC yesterday, one of "Tesco's" half price offers.

Last night I downloaded the software from the Garmin website which allows the coordinates to be downloaded from the "Geocaching" website, direct to the GPS.

It downloaded OK, but the PC cannot install it; it was tried on 3 PC's, all with WinXP [service pack 3], two running IE, and one running Firefox, and with no other applications running .

I've installed the program from the CD Rom, and I have been able to type coordinates, together with the name of the cache, into the Waypoints section of the program, and I can download those to the GPS.

Does anybody know if there is a "fix" for getting the Garmin software to install; if not, then I'll carry on with just using the Waypoints part of the GPS.

Also, does the cache ID number, ie GC1F4RK, mean anything to the GPS, I mean, can I download this into the GPS instead?

  14. Good Morning,

I'm a bit new to Geocaching - only joined last week.

Of the five cache that I have visited so far, two have logs that are full, soaking wet, and pretty well unusable, with pen/pencil going through the paper.

Is it considered good form to Email the "owner" to request a replacement, or is it OK to supply a clean, dry, replacement, and then notify?

If so, should the old log be taken home for drying and hopefully, repatriation, with the cache owner?

Both logs that I'm referring to, are in the 35mm film canister cache, although a wet log could be found in any type of cache, I suppose.

    Thanks in advance

If you have a replacement log with you then by all means go ahead and leave it, then let the cache owner know. If the log you found is full or unuseable and the cache can't host another log then I would suggest you take it and say so in your log, also mentioning you will be happy to mail it to the cache owner if they want it.

OK, thanks for very swift reply!
