  1. I am kind of surprised a "team" hasn't rented 10 or so buses and drop off 1 person by each cache and then have each team member sign the log exactly at the same time to claim all the finds in 1 minute.
  2. Don't see any mention of GC.com so the frog isn't able to sanction it.
  3. There. I fixed it for you. Actually we own the the forest since they are our federal lands. Forest service worker are paid with federal funds which are collected from taxes we pay. They may manage them but they don't own them (at least in the U.S.A.) unless it is a private preserve.
  4. Actually with the right permit chopping down trees can be done all the time! Ever hear of firewood?
  5. I went on a hike the other day in a national forest along a well marked trail. Guess how the forest service marked the trail. They nailed the trail markers into live trees, and it wasn't just one or two. In fact I would guess most back country trail markers are attached to live tree with a nail.
  6. If there was an actual governing body then you could go to Guinness World record and actually have a valid world record for any record. If the main site elected not to participate and all the other sites did, I would predict that people would flock to the other sites to have official stats. If someone would submit a request to have a world record today, Guinness would ask who is the governing body of that sport and since there isn't they would probably pass on stating a world record. Most sports type hobbies have an governing organization that establish some set of rules.
  7. With all the discussion on FTF records, most finds in a day, Virtual caches, challenges, etc I wonder if geocaching needs a governing body that defines what a cache is, what a find is, etc GC.com and the other sites have stated they are just listing sites but they also appear to make rules that fit their site. For example GC.com says that Wherigo are caches but other sites don't, other sites say virtual are caches this site doesn't. GC.com has a proximity rule (not sure of other sites). GC.com doesn't recognize FTF others might. I could see this governing body being made up of representatives from listing sites and cachers from different areas of the country and world. To have valid records (most finds, most FTF, etc)the site of the finds would have to conform to the geocaching governing board. For example if QR code scans were not a recognized cache type, I could not say I have the world record for most caches in a day by scanning and recording 3000 QR codes.
  8. Just looked at the Guinness World Records website and it still doesn't show a record for most caches done in a day so I don't think that is a recognized stat. GC.com doesn't even acknowledge the record so it is hard to say that it is a world record.
  9. Another issue would be what listing service you use. I can create 5000 caches and list them on my own site and have someone smash the record. (My site wouldn't have any 528 foot restriction so they can be right next to each other).
  10. How can there be a world record if geocaching isn't a competition? Also did GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS verify the find counts?
  11. I think the demise of the game was with the "log only" caches. The original and probably the first couple of years of caching had containers that could hold swag. Even if you didn't always trade it was kind of interesting of seeing what other people had left. I remember even the "small" caches were able to hold beads or state quarters that could be traded. Even after finding my first "log only" cache I thought it was strange that the container couldn't hold anything but the log. And although there were some crafty and clever hides the swag became less important, writing anything in the actual log besides your name (and possibly date) become harder to do, and the game changed to be about the numbers instead of the adventure. If there was one thing that I would require a geocache to be is that it be something that could hold swag - kind of what cache actually means.
  12. We have a puzzle cache in my area that the CO actually states that it isn't solvable by the local caching community but it still got published and even the request to have it archived has fallen on deaf ears. The cache is more or a rant from a cacher that live 200 miles away from the area that had some problems with some of the caches while they were here.
  13. If there is a 150 mile restriction on challenge caches then GC.com needs to update their help article for challenge caches. Also with that restrictions most DeLorme challenges and county challenges in Western state would not be possible as most states are larger the 150 miles. Also would be guessing that most date type challenge caches would have to be voided since it probably isn't possible to fulfill the requirements within 150 mile of certain locations. Geocaches is about getting out and exploring the outdoors (and not just your backyard).
  14. My logs from 2001 still show up so it doesn't appear to be an issue with the older finds. Your status shows an you have been a Member Since:Friday, 12 October 2001 so that is the right account.
  15. I had setup a cache (still unpublished) on the 23rd of October and got a GC code that was already past the 40000 so it would have been earlier then that.
  16. What is kind of ironic is that we now protect areas where some ancient people engraved pictures in stone or trees and people come from all over to see this "damage". I guess a lot of people are glad there weren't any guidelines back then.
  17. Actually deer can do a lot of damage to trees. Males will use them to remove the felt from their antlers and leave nice gouge marks. Bears also will claw a mark on a tree to show ownership of a territory. A lot of caches in my area there are no trails so your blazing your own trail and in some cases the geopath will take longer to recover in some environments then the dead tree with the engraving to decay.
  18. So I take it you don't bushwack at all to find a cache? Any step off the path does damage to the area so I hope you practice what you preach. A geocache no matter where it is placed is probably affecting the area around it. We can try to minimize our impact and even do some good with cleaning up the area but we all still do damage.
  19. Or create a pocket query from some one else bookmark. I see peanutsdad has a bookmark that has 764 caches on it.
  20. What gps do you use or o/s if you want to use on your computer?
  21. That was a nice update they had wasn't it
  22. And I see that both still have virtuals listed in your stats and one actually created a virtual cache. If you don't think they are caches then you should remove them from your listings. I am proud of my 32 virtual and 1 webcam finds. In fact if I am in a new area I would rather pick up a virtual then a LPC. Also if they weren't caches why are they still included on GC in their statistics?
  23. The wiki page is correct. Other listing sites still have these type of caches and they do say the GC has elected not to participate in listing these. GC is not the only source of geocaching and isn't the authority over them. Just because you have more listing then the other sites doesn't mean you get to make all the rules.
  24. Actual the forum site is still up even with the main page down.
