  1. Welcome! ... from an East Coaster
  2. RSS is an XML format file used to make summary information available to clients. They are available on many websites, and are read in a news aggregator, similar to a usenet news reader. It allows one to remain current with a great many sites without having to actually visit each site. Clients are available for virtually any platform. In this case, you could have a feed for each cache you are tracking, and whenever a new log entry is posted for that cache, the aggregator would let you know and give you the option to read either the entire log entry, or a short summary of the entry. The sandbox site would, and I'm guessing here, be a mirror of this site used to test new/modified code before it is put into production (at least that's how we use them). Examples: http://www.disobey.com/amphetadesk/ http://www.feeddemon.com http://www.sharpreader.net etc etc etc
  3. I find myself using mine more and more. I get within X feet, take a bearing, and let the hunt begin! -- Am I stuttering? No idea how I ended up with two copies... sorry --

  5. Anyone in Eastern NC sees a cottonmouth near a cache, let me know! I'm trying to find one for the collection. ;-)
  6. Congratulations, and welcome to the crowd!
  7. Go to the Geocaching Seek page, enter the coordinates of where you plan to place your cache, and it will tell you the distance to the nearest cache(s).
  8. I second the TextAmerica recommendation although I have recently switched to e-mailing them to my own blog.
  9. For me it was the GPS. I've had a number of GPS's over the years (big yellow Delorme model for old Palm Pilot, some low number Garmin, 12, 12XL, III) and now have an older III+ which I keep in my car, and a Legend which I've been carrying backpacking and now geocaching.
  10. Just for the record, I returned to this cache site yesterday, and found it! For some reason, the GPS took me right to the correct area (+/- 20 feet). The cache was actually located almost 200 yards from where it took me the day before. No idea how that happened, but at least I found it... and two others
  11. Thanks to all for the pointers. I intentionally did not look at either the pictures or the 'decrypted' clue for my first time out. Now that I have, I'll head back out there tomorrow and give it another go. As to the settings, I triple-checked my GPS before and after the search to confirm that it was indeed in WGS84. The waypoints were downloaded from here and uploaded to the unit with the EasyGPS found on this site. Thanks for the welcome, and I'll be out there tomorrow hunting around.
  12. Hello, I'm brand new to this (signed up today) and went out in search of my first cache today. After hiking for a bit in search of 'Our Sign' by CarolinaEddie I ended up outside the western boundary of the park with the GPS pointing into someone's back yard. I was (according to the GPS, a Garmin Etrex Legend for the record) less than 55 feet from the waypoint, which would have put me smack dab in the middle of the yard. Others have found this cache, so I'm wondering if a) I'm doing something wrong, or caches are found on private property? Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, A. Noob
