  1. Just thought of something today for driving -- I like to have the "time to next" field up when I drive, so I get a countdown until my next turn. It would be nice if this tab included the general direction (L or R) of the next turn, because you can't always tell by glancing at the route on the map.

For example, if you had a left turn coming up, it might say "3:05(L)" or similar. This would be a significant help around here, where traffic is miserable, because it would let me know what lane I should be in way before the initial turn warning.

  2. It zooms out far enough to see the next turn on the route. I agree sometimes it goes out too far and I've thought about turning it off completely, but I leave it on. I don't find that it slows things down or causes any crashes, just that sometimes it zooms out too far.

What would be nice is to use autozoom, but limit the amount it can possibly zoom out to X distance. I don't think that feature is currently available.

BTW, a nice tab to have active while routing is "time to next," which gives you a timer countdown to the next turn. It is nice to make a turn, then quickly glance at that tab and see you have 6 minutes (or whatever) to the next turn, so you know not to worry about being in a specific lane for a while.

  3. I haven't done this with two cables at once, but Mapsource requires you to specify which port to use for upload and download. FWIW, I originally thought the 60CS should be powered when attached to the computer, but the batteries last so long it hasn't proven to be a problem at all.

  4. The 2610 has a field to show the street address, too. I agree it would be nice on the 60cs. Frankly, the 60cs screen is so much smaller that I probably would never use it -- I like the feature for showing the upcoming cross-street better, and given the size of the screen, I wouldn't turn both on and lose that much more real estate. But I always would like more options, so bring it on!

As for the ramp issue above, maybe I'm not understanding the problem, or maybe it depends on where you are. Here in the Washington DC area, the streets are very confusing but luckily the names for the exit ramps on the GPSr always match what it says on the highway sign (and usually, it provides the exit number as well). I have CN5 data (from my 2610) loaded, not CS, but I assume it's no different.

  5. I have the 60CS. The compass doesn't seem to be much of a battery hog, but I only turn it on when I need it. Overall, the unit is tremendously easy on batteries. My 2200mah rechargeables seem to be lasting forever.

I haven't had any lockups or bugs since the first week I got the unit. I've updated the s/w twice since then. The early s/w was buggy, and I suppose there's still a bug here or there in the latest update, but I haven't seen any (though I don't like how topo/contour lines are now displayed... but Garmin says they'll fix that and it's not really a "bug"). The display is terrific, the antenna works great, and autorouting works great, too. 56MB was enough memory for me. I live near DC, and loaded all of DC, to the west to halfway into WV, out to the east to the Atlantic Ocean, on the north side to PA, MD, DE, and south to Richmond, plus 24K topo of all of Shenandoah NP (a very large park) and the Harper's Ferry WV area -- all in all, a very large amount of data.

    I'm very satisfied!

  6. When I do find by name in the cities and look for Ostrava, which is one of the big cities here in CZ, I alway press O, S and T and then the 60C automaticly closes the virtual keyboard and presents me w/ 5 cities - 2 from Poland, 1 from Russia, Germany and Sweden.

I'm using the Atlantic basemap model. Can anyone try it on their units?

It may be in there with an alternate spelling, if there is one. That's one of the problems with using "find by name"-type searches on any computer program.

Here's something I wish was in the firmware: whenever I do routing, I manually turn on the "data fields" so I know how close I am to the next turn and my ETA. When I'm not routing, these fields are just blank, so I have to manually turn them back off. It would be nice if they automatically came up when routing, then went away once you reached the destination. The 2610 does something almost like that -- allowing different tabs when routing versus when just driving. I wish the 60CS could do that.

  7. I have a 2610 and loaded CN maps on my 60CS with no problems at all. I used the "unlock wizard" to unlock the maps. Actually, I did it on my second try. On my first try, I didn't realize I had to unlock the maps first -- I tried just selecting them and uploading them to the unit, but the MapSource program did the whole indexing thing and then it warned me that the maps had to be unlocked. So I had to start over, doing the unlock wizard program first.

If I remember right, the unlock wizard took me online, and the computer sent the unit ID# to Garmin to allow me to unlock the maps as the second GPSr.

If you didn't go through the above steps, you might have missed unlocking the maps properly.

If you search around here, there are threads telling you how to reset the unit, if you want to do so and start over. It might be page+enter when turning it on(?). Hopefully someone else can help there.

  8. I disagree with:

Improved map colors for contour lines.

When I use Topo (100K, not 24K), I can barely see some of the contour lines now.

    Hmm.

Ditto. I use 24K Topo East, and the lines are so thin now that they're almost invisible. Was someone actually complaining about the topo lines before? I can't imagine why. I liked the thicker lines.

They are still pretty easy to see (and look nice) in "night" mode, because the background is black so they stand out more. But I rarely hike at night. :(

  9. Also, keep in mind that the digital compass is useless for routing when driving, anyway, since the unit has to be flat to use the compass but upright while driving (so you can see it and so it can receive signals).

But if you are walking with the compass on, the compass does work while routing. For example, if you stand in one place and turn around, the map will rotate if you have "track up" set.

  10. 1. When in the Geocache Mode with the compass screen showing, if I hit MENU and then select Calibrate Compass, it just goes back to the compass screen instead of going into the calibration screen. When on the regular compass screen (Not in the geocache mode), the calibration screen comes up properly.

Yes -- I've had the same problem (as your first, not your second), and I meant to mention it here. It's kind of funny, because basically, the glitch is that absolutely nothing happens when you ask it to calibrate. It just ignores you.

... so I was all like, "Calibrate compass, yo?" and the GPS was all like, "Yeah, whatever."

  11. For what it's worth, I still haven't had to use my new (properly sized) Strong protectors because the one I cut to fit myself works perfectly. It was from a pack of Palm V protectors bought at Radio Shack. It comes with a "credit card" like thing in the pack to apply it, and it went on perfectly clear and smooth -- you have to look very close to tell there is a screen protector on it. I didn't have to use heat or water or anything.

  12. I guess I just haven't had that bad of a crash yet. When it shuts off after holding down the power button (maybe pressing multiple times), the shutdown is definitely "abnormal." The screen sort of fades out instead of turning off as normal. I do hope Garmin clears up the remaining bugs. I haven't had a crash since updating to 3.10, FWIW.

  13. Murph, as Michael said, hit "Menu" when on the information tab of the map setup, and turn off the detailed maps. You'll see the basemap then. The basemap is terrible, just vectors (straight line point to point) of the main roads -- you'll never use it once you have the detailed maps loaded.

Michael, is it possible the maps are there but you aren't zooming in enough? I guess not, since if you set detail to "most," it should show detail even when you are zoomed out. Strange problem. Have you tried hitting the "Find" button and seeing if it finds anything (restaurants, points of interest) near you? I wonder if they uploaded.

  14. A couple of obvious things that it sounds like you've done, but I might as well mention them -- make sure you are selecting the maps you want in MapSource with the selection tool. When you do, they are listed on the side, along with a running tally of how much memory they will take up. Then when you click "Save to GPS" on MapSource, make sure "MAPS" is checked along with ROUTES and TRACKS. Finally, in the 60CS map setup menu, scroll over to the "information" tab and hit MENU again and ask it to "show all maps" or whatever the command is. You shouldn't have to do that last step, it should be turned on automatically.

Other than those basic things, I can't imagine what the problem could be unless you aren't looking at the area of the basemap where you loaded a detailed map.

  15. I only can fit enough maps to get half way. I'll bring the laptop.

Since the major roads and highways are in the basemap, you can route from one area of detailed maps to another without really having to have detailed maps in between. But perhaps you are already taking this into account. If not, you might only want to upload detailed maps of the destination and anywhere you might want to make excursions in between.

  16. I took a look at mine last night. Clearly it's from the "first batch," and it's too big. :bad:

Strike that. New ones just arrived. Thanks, Strong Engineering!

(My latest "cut to size" Palm V protector looks great, though, and I won't need the Strong ones for a while.)
