  1. Thanks for all the tips. I am going to adjust my Oregon accordingly and keep it set this way using it as a dedicated Geocaching GPS since i have a Nuvi 500 to get me where i need to go via the road. I will see how it works now and i will let you know if i think its performing better. I did however order a GPSMAP 60st, it was to cheap to let pass by. Eric
  2. My software version is currently 4.20 and my GPS software version is 5.0. I have disabled the compass. In your opinion will this keep my track pointing to the top of the screen now? Thanks, Eric
  3. I am very disappointed in this handheld. My Nuvi 500 is more accurate than this unit. Im always able to locate caches but you can almost do that with out a GPS after you have done this a while. I would never depend on this unit to navigate and it will be gone very soon. Now what to upgrade to? There is no way to go but up the way i see it. Thanks for the reply, Eric
  4. My Oregon is very erratic. I have it set to track up, but the line to a cache for example moves all over the place. It works perfectly in driving mode but in my opinion it's almost useless in walking mode. I would be scared to rely on the Oregon for navigation to actually get someplace. On a night cache i had to use my phones GPS to get back to my truck. So tell me how you have you Oregon set up and what you set it to when get out of your vehicle to walk to a cache. Thanks, Eric
  5. Is anyone going to be caching any of these days? We are down for our fall camping trip and will be staying at Hillman Ferry Campground.
  6. Howdy, I am planning a trip to Land Between the Lakes soon and have been loading up caches in the area and have noticed a trend. Almost every cache that shows a TB or Coin has been logged as missing in the last couple of days. It appears someone has cleaned out all of them. This has to be the work of one person because it's so many cache's in close proximity to one another. Six are missing out of one cache alone. Search zipcode 42045. We have several TB's we were planning to start on a journey, but now i am wondering if i want to leave them at LBL. I know you take a chance when you leave these items, but come on, we aren't leaving gold bars in these caches. Just some worthless items that others would like to find and the owners would like to watch as they move along. Eric
  7. Yes, they requested a hint. The only reason i gave them one was because they are from MI and the cache is in KY. Since they are from MI, it's not like they can go back in a few days. The only thing that bothers me is that there is a prize for the FTF. If they find the cache, with the hints given, and take the FTF, i will place another FTF prize for the locals.
  8. I just sent a email hint to some people who are from out of state. Several states away from home. I gave them a hint because they took the time to look, 30 minuets and that was a long time to be outside in Kentucky today. Wind hit 73mph here. But since they were so far from home i felt like i should give them a hint because i feared they may never get a chance to log the find. Now if you are local and don't have far to drive i am going to make you work much harder for a hint.
  9. Is there a way to search members by location?
  10. It is absolutely in no way disrespectful to place caches in cemeteries. I have been visiting cemeteries all my life. There are thousands of cemeteries in travel brochures. They are marked on every topo map I have ever seen. Just because there is no one famous in the cemetery, does in no way mean it is not meant to be visited by anyone who chooses. I have meet people at Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky, that because of the old cemeteries, was the only reason they visited the area. Since I have been Geocaching, and it hasn’t been that long, I have found a few caches placed in cemeteries and my travels have taken me past several that I have visited with no cache hidden in them at all. Since I started this hobby, I have found my wife’s 5 or 6 times Great Grandfather. She had no idea where he was buried. Let me tell you about him. His name is Captain Henry Rhodes. He is known as the grandfather of Muhlenberg County, KY. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and a Kentucky Senator. I have no idea what the place looked like in his time, but it is in fair condition today. If not for this hobby, I probably never would have found his resting place. I will be placing a cache there as soon as I get one ready. At another cemetery, I meet a man who new my wife’s father. We talked for several minuets and he told me some things I did not know about him. He died in 1986 and I knew him for less than a year. I cannot tell you how pleased I am to have stopped in this cemetery, and I would never have found it, or crossed paths with this person in not for Geocaching. Also, it turns out that this same man, at one time many years ago, farmed the land where I now live. I could tell you a few more stories, and I may at another time, but if takes placing a cache in these old cemeteries to get people to visit them then I think we, as Geocachers, are doing a great service. So please do not post negative posts about these types of caches. Nothing good could come from keeping people from placing caches is these old and sometimes forgotten cemeteries.

    Garmin 500

Hello, I have a Nuvi 500. This is my first GPS, so i can't compare it to anything. I will say that is does a good job on the road and so far i have found 25 caches with it. I have also used it in the rain with no problems. The battery life is OK i would say. I plug it back in each time i return to my truck. Also it is better at finding the caches than i am. It has always been dead on, even though i have not been clever enough to figure out what i was looking for some of the time. That being said, i am in the market for a handheld more because i want one, rather than the Nuvi 500 will not do what i want it to do. If you have anymore questions please feel free to send me an email. I hope this helps.
