  1. Good choices, I use my Nuvi 350 for paperless geocaching and navigating to the parking area then I use a Venture HC to find the cache. If I get stuck I can always go back to the Nuvi and read the cache description, hint, or even the last few logs. I also use the Nuvi's Favorites menu to mark which caches I've found and it even pulls double duty as my MP3 player in the car.
  2. Cool, I have been using a pic of my old pickup on the splash screen. Now I'm gonna use one of these. Thanks!
  3. This is good info. I use the same setup on mine. The Nuvi will give you turn by turn nav right up close then you switch to offroad and it will take you straight to the cache. And it plays your favorite MP3's to boot. I've only used mine on a couple of caches. I usually leave it in the car because I'm afraid I will drop it.
  4. Ok, after rereading this it looks like you are doing the same thing as me. I wonder if you save the 10 or 20 nearest caches to your favorites folder if they would show on the map. That would be great for a spontanious caching trip. Just take a minute to save a few to the favorites folder and away you go.
  5. Click "Where to?", "My Locations", "Custom POIs" and you will get the 5 nearest caches displayed with an arrow for bearing and distance displayed. You can even hit the down arrow to view other caches, not just the 5 closest. The list is constantly updated as you drive. This even works while the Nuvi is giving you turn by turn directions to a location. You won't see the map, but the Nuvi will continue to speak to you even while viewing the custom POIs. I use mine like this all the time, it lets me know when I'm getting close to a cache anywhere along my route.
  6. It's sold, I'm just waiting for the money to hit my paypal before I delete this post. If it doesn't work out I'll send some pics. Thanks, Randall
  7. I don't need 3 GPS's, somebody make me an offer on this one.
  8. It doesn't come much more step by step than this --------->http://pilotsnipes.googlepages.com/index.html . This is where I learned to load caches on my Nuvi 350.
  9. Rino is in good shape, always stored inside a foam pouch when not in use. I still have the box it came in and everything is still in the box except for the belt clip. I have a generic belt clip I use and will include that. Comes with a Midland G-227 FRS that is a little scuffed, but still works good. I will print a copy of the FRS owners manual and include that in the box as well. $125 shipped to the lower 48.
  10. I've used mine for a couple of caches. It's not a really rugged unit and it's not waterproof, but it is more accurate than my old Rino. I've used it just a couple of times when I couldn't get a good lock with the Rino, but I'm always afraid I'm gonna drop it or fall on it. I just ordered a Venture HC to replace the Rino so the Nuvi will soon be a permanent resident of my cars dash. No more field trips for the Nuvi.
  11. I second the Nuvi 350 vote. You can pick up refurbs on eBay for about $220 now, maybe even less if you shop around. I just bought a refurb unit and it looks and works like new.
  12. I do something similar without a PDA. I have Rino and a Nuvi. I use GSAK to load the pocket queries on the Nuvi and it gives me turn by turn navigation right to the cache area, then I use the Rino (waterproof) to take me the last few feet from the car to the cache. If I get stumped I can look at the Nuvi and read the description, hint or the last few log entries.
  13. Hey MadHerb, I just used that same method to hunt for a cache that I've tried to find a couple of times with my Rino. The Nuvi took me within a meter on the first try. The Rino would drift all around under some fairly thick tree cover, but the Nuvi never wavered. I guess its time to upgrade the Rino as the Nuvi seems a bit delicate to carry into the woods.
  14. You can use GSAK on the Nuvi too. I just loaded the 450 closest caches to my house into my Nuvi 350 using GSAK. It doesnt lock on quite as fast as the Tom Tom though, mine takes about 16 secs to lock on. I haven't used a Tom Tom yet, but I am totally satisfied with the Nuvi.
  15. I noticed something else today that everyone else may have taken for granted, but not me. If you click "Where to? -> My Locations -> Custom POI's" the caches are sorted by proximity, so only the 5 closest show up on the top screen. This even works when navigating to a location. You will continue to get voice prompts so you won't get lost in unfamiliar areas, but you can see the bearing and distance to the 5 closest caches to you. As you travel new caches will pop up along your route. Not as good as points on a map to me, but still pretty cool.
  16. This is really cool. I just loaded the 450 caches closest to my house into my 350. Quick and easy, takes less than the hour suggested and works just as described above. Thanks!
  17. LOL, We did the same thing. We drove about 85 miles, but we left home at 9 pm on a work night. We didn't get in until about midnight. It was a blast, my first nighttime cache and first YJTB. I wrote a long log entry about the adventure HERE. Then a couple of days later we made another road trip to grab our first geo-coin and another YJTB + we got FTF on the cache with the second YJTB. It made for a pretty cool morning.
  18. I grabbed one a few days ago, then swapped it for a second that I found in another cache. No reason for me to horde 'em. I just wanted to have one to show my buddies for a few days. I'll be sending the lil guy on his way soon.
