  1. hi folks, thanks much for your input. i understand that i'll get longer life from the rechargables but i think it's important to note that i got much longer battery life out of the same disposlable alkaline AA batteries on my old 400t than i do on my new 450. it's not even close. i didn't even use battery save mode or backlight timeout on my old 400t. i know there isn't anything defective with the SD card because i previously used this same card in my droid phone without problems. as some have suggested, i guess i'll have to try it without the SD card to see if there is a remarkable difference in battery life. but i don't see how i can actually use the unit without the maps. i kind of need them. what do i do, just turn the unit on with no SD card and sit it on my coffee table to see how long before the batteries die?
  2. Hi folks, I am having serious batterly life problems in my Oregon 450. The batteries never last more than 4 hours. I called Garmin support and they said it "might" be related to the 16 GB SD card. They said they only officially support a 4GB card and that it is possible the unit is using extra resources and thus draining the battery trying to use the 16 GB SD (class 4) card. I am using alkaline batteries and have the unit set for alkaline. I've tried several different batteries (Energizer, etc). I am aware that I could get somewhat longer life out of lithium but I should be getting much better than 4 hours out of alkaline. I used to use a 400t and got much longer batterly life using alkalines on it. I have battery save mode on and the backlight timeout is enabled. Other than the battery problem, the unit works normally and can read the maps on the SD card successfully. Does Garmin's suggestion sound right? Anyone else with any experience with this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated. PS: I'm also posting this inquiry to the GPSFileDepot forums since that is where I obtained my maps for this unit.
  3. I let a nice caching streak die because I didn't feel right claiming a find on a cache that I couldn't sign because of muggles. Oh well. On the other hand, I've claimed a find on a cache I didn't sign because i lost my pen and the container had only a log. In that case, I did take a pic of the log and attach it to my log entry. Is one ok and not the other?
  4. Hey folks, I'm looking to purchase some wooden nickel style signature items to leave in caches. Last year my wife bought me 100 custom wooden nickels and they were cool. The only problem I had was they were easily ruined when damp. Of course anything made of wood isn't meant to stay wet but the lettering on these came right off when even a little wet. I don't know anything about how these are made but if you looked closely it seemed the lettering was pasted on as opposed to painted or printed or whatever you call it. So, can anyone recommend any good sources for quality made and affordably priced custom wooden nickels? PS: I'm not interested in making them myself. Thanks!
  5. thanks for the replies. i relayed the info to my friend
  6. Hi folks, My friend and his wife are having a friendly debate about whether it is bad etiquette to mail a TB across the continent to a friend and fellow geocacher for him to place. Here's an excerpt of the email I received, "Hey buddy I found a travel bug and was going to send it to you. My wife says thats cheating, I say a TB was meant to travel and it doesn't matter how it gets to it's next destination." Let's assume the TB in question doesn't have any special goal other than to travel. I figure it's cool for the TB to travel and it doesn't matter if it gets there by the hands of the current holder or whether he gets sent in the mail. AMIRITE?
  7. so the "gerbiL cacHe" would be ok to go for during the 6 day shotgun season? i missed the recent event but want to get up there. on the other hand, i was considering saving this for a milestone or snowshoe attempt
  8. Hey guys, Deer and Bear shotgun season begins Monday the 6th and runs through the 11th in New Jersey Briansnat suggested staying out of WMA's during this time period which is probably a good idea. Can anyone recommend some good hiking areas that do not allow hunting during the next week? I'm going to do some research now but your recommendations are appreciated. Sorry Packanack, I havn't had time to buy any pink vests. lol.
  9. Hi, I just called them and they said they would ship it when it comes it. I've been fooled before with "it will be here soon" and I hope it indeed comes soon. I've been using my Droid since my last Oregon ended up in the Hudson.
  10. bump. i completed the survey
  11. Bass Pros Shops show this item as Out of Stock. I called to ask when they expect to have it and they said "mid November" which the lady said should be "any day now". lol. FYI - they charge $16.95 for shipping bringing the total to $286.89. That's still less than Amazon which is currently at $320.52
  12. oops my bad. it's Micro SD HC. How can I find out what class this card is? it came with the phone. next to the 16 GB there is a little 4 in a circle. not sure what that means. could it be class 4?
  13. thanks for the replies everyone. i have an extra 16GB SanDisck micro DB HC card from my droid phone. not sure what the HC stands for. Could i use this in the 450?
  14. great idea! keep them coming folks.
  15. Hi folks, I recently took a tumble and now my trusty Oregon 400t is somewhere floating down the Hudson River. I'm in the market for a new GPSr and since I liked my 400t I figure I'll stick with the Oregon line. There's quite a difference in price between the 450t and the 450. Is the only difference between the 450t and the 450 the preloaded maps? My friend told me that I can just get the 450 and then load free topo maps that are just as good or better than the preloaded maps that come with the 450t. Is that right? Can anyone point me to some instructions or website with more info on this? Thanks!!!
  16. I could understand bringing the cash. You never know when a poker game is going to break out. But the jewelry? Respect to the good samaritan. he can sleep good at night knowing he did the right thing.
  17. You guys might get a kick out of the bear encounter I had while attempting the "Quagmire at Rock and Rill" cache this morning.
  18. is it just me or does that look like a human hand on the left side of the picture?
  19. after all these years of hiking I've come to the conclusion that abandoning cars in the woods is a new jersey right of passage also saw this deep in a swamp area. kind of spooky
  20. Just got back from the High Line Park and the Knicks pre-season game. We kind of forgot about caching for most of our walk but remembered in time to pick up GC2C3RF. It was our first NYC cache! The park was great for a nice stroll and wasn't quite as crowded as we thought.
  21. Looks like these caches are in or below the park. GC2C3RF GC1V4MX Sounds great. Will post a trip report if we make it there today.
  22. Hey folks, Might be going to NYC today with my son and we were thinking of checking out the High Line Park. Just wondering if anyone has checked it out and if there are any caches along the way that you recommend. i'll check it out online before i go but if anyone has any recommendations it is appreciated. http://www.thehighline.org
