  1. I'm trying to see both sides of this story and i know some of the players on both sides too. It's doubly sad that the archived caches were named for, and in a sense were gifts for, some of the great cache hiders in the region. I was there during the CTTS when these caches were published and enjoyed the genuine camaraderie felt among all the attendees of the event. I hope lessons can be learned from this disagreement and in the long term both sides can reconcile. PS: I've seen my share of ammo cans and when WNC says one of the containers was a 'mortar sized ammo can' he's not kidding. One of the greatest cache containers i've seen.
  2. I've recently moved to a new area and it seems the cache placement in my area is very dominated by a couple of cache placers. Is there a way to exclude certain cache owners from a pocket query (or other method)? PS: In no way is this a statement about those cache owners I'd like to exclude in my query. It's just there are so many hides from just a couple of players around here and I'd like a convenient way to identify other caches to seek. Many thanks!
  3. excellent skills kunarion. confirmed false alarm. lol
  4. there's a Pokey (from Gumby) figure and right behind what looks like a TB tag. guess i need my eyes checked
  5. It's so hard to tell but do you spot a TB tag at 1:48 in this music video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRVdLdge8DE edit: title should have a question mark in it
  6. i am experiencing the same problem. iPhone 4s here
  7. thanks for the info. according to the Glen Gray website one of their orienteering courses is named "Geo-Cache" http://www.glengray.org/orient.html
  8. agreed that's what it looks like. maybe there were more markers further north. we took a left onto the Old Guard trail shortly passed this spot. i'm trying to remember if wjgrun said he's seen these. i was too out of breath from hiking up the hill to listen properly.
  9. Hi folks and Happy New Year! I was hiking along the Yellow Trail in the Ramapos yesterday with wjgrun. We saw this numbered marker a few feet off of the Yellow Trail not far from A Curious Yellow North (GCPY3Z). I was wondering if anyone knows what it's for? I also wonder about the plastic band around the post. We didn't see any other numbered markers yesterday, we were between Skyline Dr and Bear Swamp Rd. I didn't notice anything particularly interesting (rock or vegetation) at the post. Anyhow, it just piqued my interest and I was wondering if anyone knew what is was and what the purpose is.
  10. Northern NJ geocaches are well aware of the ubiquity of abandoned mines in the area. Geological Survey working to map sites Hey, they could Treequest's and Harry Dolphin's cache coords for a few hundred mines in Morris County. Sprinkle in some Briansnat and Klizich caches in northern Passaic county and the research is nearly complete.
  11. speaking of bobcats, has anyone here seen a bobcat in the wild in NJ? any stories?
  12. yes, because a pamphlet telling someone they are destined to burn in hell for eternity unless they believe in your version of god is just like finding a burger king coupon.
  13. I prefer to keep my caching secular. That's just my opinion and I don't get my panties in twist when I find advertisements, religious or otherwise in a cache. Hah! I just found that cache last week. Like I said in my log, I was surprised none of the previous logs have mentioned it. A four page, single spaced, hand written letter is worth a mention IMO. There is one of these in the cache down the trail from yours.
  14. haha. no, just expressing my state of mind by the time i had completed those caches. actually, i "favorited" at least two of the caches in that park so they surely left an impression. i remember at the time thinking the area provided an interesting contrast to the terrain of caching in the highlands. wouldn't want to trudge through it all the time is all. The BOLP is a nice spot and surely worth a visit, particularly if you are a birder. My absolute favorite in the general area is briansnat's "The Island" cache. This cache isn't for everyone, but if you enjoy hiking and a little adventure then it has a lot to offer. I'd wait for the dry weather for this one though. after all, aren't the caches that are least visited and provide the greatest adventure the most fun?
  15. what Brian said +1. although i found the park interesting and enjoyed finding the caches there last summer, i got torn up and eaten up pretty bad and was glad there weren't more caches in the area
  16. Hi maki, Well, I have been using the 450 without the SD card and if there is any improvement in battery life it is marginal. So I'd say I'm getting 4 to 5 hours per set of batteries which is not acceptable IMO. I figure I'll just live with it until I go ahead and purchase rechargeables. Your experience with 40 minutes sounds horrible. Try calling Garmin support maybe. Good luck.
  17. http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2011/02/21/2011-02-21_aviation_unit_keeps_rotors_humming_247.html Weird thing is that I have a friend who hiked Storm King yesterday and also posted a video on FB who reported conditions were "decent" there. Of course he is a real wing nut so it's hard to know for sure.
  18. walkin ed and packanack, glad to see you are getting out there. too bad my Costco snow shoes only lasted two outings before breaking. but that's it for my pity party. you guys are inspiring me to get out there this week. nice!
  19. i was enjoying the winter hiking until the Great Freeze of 2011. i've wiped out a few times when the crust breaks underfoot. i've had it and can't wait until the thaw and the mud. i broke down and did a parking lot cache yesterday and enjoyed it. lol. my poor Lab of 14 years is so depressed he looks like a hound dog. i had been thinking about Storm King, one of my favorite places, the days before Brian posted the article. looking forward to getting up there this Spring. be careful out there friends. maybe we'll get a good thaw this week. this marks the end of this rant post/
  20. Haha. The bear story is true (Quagmire at Rock Rill) but I cringed when I saw the author's Indiana Jones reference. I figured I'd get skewered by my caching friends and probably will (right Bill?) lol. The article has some good words for the great north Jersey caching scene and at least NNJC got a shout which is cool IMO.
  21. Two come to mind: Remove the card and Mapsource will automatically install gmapsupp.img internally On your PC, transfer the gmapsupp.img file from the card to the internal Garmin folder BTW, I doubt this has anything to do with your 16GB card, as do you. The OR 450 loves batteries, I get ~10 hrs on a pair of Eneloops w/o battery saver. thanks very much for the instructions. i successfully removed the SD card and used Mapsource to move the topo map to the internal unit. i'll test it out to see if battery life changes at all. on the upside, at least i don't have to carry arounod that heavy SC card anymore.
  22. ah, thanks that's a good idea. hate to be a bother but can someone give me a hint as to how to load the maps onto the internal storage?
  23. sounds like fun. please keep me posted.
