  1. That, 24K maps from Garmin, or OSM maps. 100K topo maps are NOT routable. Thanks, I am still learning a lot about this system .
  2. The driving feature on my gps does not work. Anyone else having this issue? I bought the Topo 100k version, and its saying maps do not have routable roads in this area. Does that mean I need city Navigator?
  3. If you think their website is bad my friend. Their gps are hard to understand too. :-p I love mine, but it took me a bit to learn it. The learning curve on it is a bit harsh. I want to also put out that its not the quickest unit out there to load up gpx files. Nor to arrange them into closest to you or name. It takes some time to load. I figured out that you just select the closest geocache on the map to remove the arranging problem. I love my unit though. I have 3 gpsr. Delorme 40/60 and then a Magellan 710. I have not had much luck in the woods with the Magellan, so its my navigator unit for geocaching, and the delorme is my hiking unit. I am going to be trying a Garmin here in a bit. See what the difference is. Ben
  4. Where did you get the idea that adult themed things are frowned upon? They certainly are not. A popular event here is the Dive Bar series. Oh, I read a whole discussion forum on adult themed caches. I assumed that this may be boarder lined on that. And that there might be a commotion about it. Anyway, I hear what you guys are saying. And it really sounds great. I am going to talk to my friend about it, and see if that would help him out. He really needs to get out more. :-p
  5. Sorry for the dumb question, but why would you invite couples to a speed-dating event? Its a change in concept more like a date night. *shrugs* This was just a thought, I am trying to help him establish a good event, and I thought the speed dating thing probably would not work. Seeing if anyone could give me any input as to how to maybe run it. If it does not work, then that is the way it is.
  6. Yea, I was worried about what you guys spoke of. It not being a full geocaching based idea and how to handle the ones that show up that are not there for a main event. What if it was spun to couples and singles? Would that draw a better gathering? Ben
  7. I know for a fact that goecaching itself is intended for family use and that adult themed stuff is generally frowned upon. But my friend had an idea for a geocaching speed dating event. Id like to get some input on this, if anyone thinks it would be good or not. Ben
  8. Alright, a little background. I am a geocacher who uses mainly handheld off road gpsers. Recently I use to have an Apple Tablet and used Geosphere. I tried others but were never very happy with them. The main one I did not care for was the Geocaching website one. I just picked up an Android Tablet with GPS capabilities, and am looking to find something comparable to Geosphere or geobucket in the android tablet form. Id like the geocaching live ability and the offline capabilities (offline maps as well). Can someone let me know anything about Neocaching, geomaid, or any of the other 3rd party geocaching programs? Ben
  9. I am referring to the Delorme Challenge which the other spoke of. It doesnt matter if it confuses anyone them being named the same, as long as someone explains it. :-p I was told specifically that it was the Delorme Challenge. So I was wondering how I started it off. Ben
  10. Where do I go to participate in one?
  11. Thanks. I was hoping there was a way to log things like with those barcode scanners access the websites.
  12. Ok I want to know if there is a geoacaching app that can log in a coin if you find it, by only taking a piture of it? Does anyone know if this exists?
  13. Found out that a notebook would be good to have. Thanks for the responses. DD
  14. I know a few of them, but are there any more? The ones that I know typically are: Pen or Pencil GPS Trackables Tradeables Flashlight Batteries Magnetic Rod Ben
  15. Oh ... I must have to put the gpx file in the correct folder. I been storing them on the sd card, not in the regular geocaching folder. Thanks for all your help. DD
  16. Why should I not have 10000 on my gps system. :-p Anyway, I have an explorist 710 and no smart phone. I currently do work all over VA. So having many many points on my gps is essential. Also I wanted to have Benchmarks so I require alot of wps and geocaches. DD
  17. Alright, I know an answer to my question, I am just hoping there might be another answer. Alright my gpsr allows for 10000 wp at a time, and geocaching only allows 1000. I know gsak will allow this to be done. Is there anyway to combine files without going through gsak? I have been wondering if anyone has found a way to do it. Can someone help me.
  18. Yes it is a good thing. I think I finally got it to work. I deleted the large active tracks file since I already had it saved on my desk top. Then I put the file strait from the downloads, after unzipping it, into the unit. Worked. No large active trackes file and the unit works. Thanks, but VP works great for this unit. It is the only way to download pocket queries, all at once into the unit. I always log right on geocaching.com Not sure if there is a better way........what is your unit? Got this to work......thanks for the zip file. My unit is the 710. Like I said before I do not bother with VP. I find the program rudimentary and lacks a lot to be desired. For one all it does is add a check mark to the box when it has been found. I would like the program to have shown something that stands out like a smiley face or an open geocache box. Normally, I just access the files on the inside of the gpsr or use GSAK as you can do the same function as VP for geocaching. Anyway just thought you might like to know your other options . Have a good one mate.
  19. Every time you come on here and post your going to get a bias opinion because not everyone uses the two units you are looking at . I currently own the Explorist 710 and love the unit for what I purchased it for. It gives me good road directions to get from where I am to the geocache unlike My Delorme. Though I would not give up my Delorme if you payed me to. To me it seems to keep better satellites in the forest. I have seen many, many other people say how wonderful the Oregon 550 is. Garmin is a much more widely bought system. If you want my opinion, if you have the 450 then go with the unit you know. If you have had problems with the other unit, try a new one. Simple as that.
  20. Knowledge is the key to working with these units when dealing with the inner workings. I know you understand what the track is now. The knowledge your lacking is how your system interprets files. When you deleted both files (active track and saved track). You inadvertently destroyed part of the program by deleting one of these files. The active file is needed for the unit to function correctly. Think of the active track file as a rickety bridge you need to cross to give someone a byte . Are you going to remove(delete) that bridge because it is rickety and unwanted? What happens to the path you need to go across? Its no longer there and your journey malfunctions. Good thing you were told to save these files eh . Alright here is the deal. I do not use vantage point. I have always accessed my system at its file core. Tracks, since you don't want them, you want to turn them off in your system(instructions above). Save the current one if you have any information on it. Purge (delete) the saved track from your system. After that there should be no more tracks you need to deal with. That's the end of them. My second thing to ask is do you want to access your geocaches from Vantage point or not? I have had some complications (smileys not showing up when I downloaded them from geocaching.com) with it and have found out it is easier to access my logs (from my gpsr) and put them unto Geocaching.com. Skipping vantage point. If your interested in that let me know (email). I will be more then happy to assist you with the process. I do realize that your gpsr is a little different then mine. But so far all of my gpsr have a similar file for found geocaches. Ben
  21. Well you could also geocache at night, earlier in the morning and before the heat of the afternoon. Or choose caches that you have to drive to and dont require too far to walk. Keep plenty of water and take things slow.
  22. I thought I posted earlier on this, taking care of the Geocache is not going to be a problem. My friends house is around 15-20 drive miles away, and then the other parts of the geocache are at my house and at a nature trail between our houses. Anyway. I will post that it is a drive. Thanks for all your responses.

  24. Alright thanks everyone. I now have a good idea of the cache it starts in VA goes to Florida and then back up to NY lol. Anyway, I got the idea, it is probably a small scale geocache to what can be done and should be good if I post the information telling them how far it will be. Thanks all.
  25. Got warned by about 3 wild dogs. (Thank god for VA dog hunters) That I was in their territory. I did not listen looking for the geocache figuring they would see I was no threat. Should not have done that. The dogs tried to surround me. Mind you I was alone. I was lucky enough to figure out when I should leave before I ended up dog chow. Dd
